It's that time of the year again, guys! The first few days are always crazy especially when you have 4 games going at once. :excited:
-
My zeal has been subdued from this season tbh. Maybe I'm just getting old.
-
Best weekend of the sports year (unless Cats are playing in the second weekend).
Our new conference bros (BYU) need to wake up.
-
The NCAA app and their website might be the best sports/streaming platform ever created. It's crazy that a one a year thing is 100x better than the straight up garbage ESPN+ platform.

Tell me more about this. I typically just watch in YTTV, which would be perfect if they allowed you to choose the four channels for their multiview element.

Have you never used this before? You can add and remove whatever you want and it's incred. Same thing in their app

First thing I thought about when seeing TBT's post

It is great, I do wish they didn't play an ad before they show the action, that's annoying as hell when flipping between late and close games.
-
Yikes BYU
Picked them to the S16 as a goodwill gesture and this is the thanks that I get....

Only other beef is that you can't watch the CBS games in the app, but, otherwise, it helps address the max logins with YTTV when you're trying to watch 4+ games at once
-
Max has everything but CBS and Paramount has CBS for any non-cable streamers. It's a little annoying to navigate to CBS but not too bad.

Looks like Brad is about to Blunderwood in the tournament again.

Looks like Brad is about to Blunderwood in the tournament again.
He has a battle on his hands.
-
This reminds me of those "bar caps" that used to be sought after in the late 1990's. Along with the South Carolina "COCKS" one, the "MOREHEAD" cap was highly sought after because it said MOREHEAD right there on the cap.

WELL I'M WRONG

I did pick Illinois to get to the elite 8, but I had little confidence in it

Not so much, as it turned out.

you can if you login with your provider credentials, maybe you can't with YTTV, dunno, but I definitely watched a CBS game on the app earlier today

Huge meltdown by Nevada. Wow.

Gotta feel for the Bulldogs to lose from a phantom foul at the end, but glad KU could gut that one out.

glad to see that ku was able to move on in the tournament despite the obvious officiating error

I just read that Kentucky has has not won an NCAA tournament game in 5 years. Tho, in 2020 the entire tournament was cancelled.
Imagine going to Kentucky as a student, and never seeing them win an NCAA game while you were there.

They are 1-4 in their last 5 games (tying for worst stretch in program history). That includes losses to No. 15 seed St. Peters and No. 14 seed Oakland.
Jay Wright said last night that the "era of freshmen is over" (aka, Calipari's entire program philosophy of one and dones) because NIL will keep kids in school longer.
-
NIL really has had an interesting impact on the game. Not to get all pit-y but if I’m being completely honest, it’s kind of refreshing to see a rule change where the majority benefited, as opposed to the usual further consolidation of power among the few who are already holding almost all the cards.
That said, I have full confidence the Dukes and Kentuckys and UNCs will figure out a way to game the current system to regain the advantage they have enjoyed for so many years

Honestly just a shame that unless KU goes on a mini run here their 2024 season will only be remembered for a botched call.

Is Dusty May the new Jay Wright? Some are saying yes.

Jay Wright could fix Kentucky.

Bill Self would win 5 titles in a row with access to Kentucky's talent.

Jay Wright could fix Kentucky.
Kentucky deserves Jay Wright even less than KU deserves Bill Self.
-
This is a school that pays Mark Stoops almost $9 million to win between 5-8 games every year. If they want Cal gone, they'll come up with $33 million fairly easily.
-
ALL WE HAD TO DO TO GO TO THE F4 LAST YEAR WAS BEAT FAU AND WE STOPPED TRYING TO SCORE WITH 8 MINUTES LEFT IN THE FREAKING GAME!!!!
In other news, Baylor advances easily...
-
Ashley Judd had been awful quiet too.
The residuals from Double Jeopardy alone would easily cover whatever amt they need

This SDSU game is close / entertaining.
-
So the Auburn AD's remark that the NCAA tourney needed to quit giving auto bids to lesser conferences because they can't compete isn't aging well. Go Yale (tho I am divided on AM and Nubbs).
My bad, it was the SEC commissioner who said this.
-
LOLz, Yale did it. SEC sucking dead air.

What happens first. KSU wins a natty in a team sport or Nebraska wins a tournament game?

That dude has committed his life to sucking every ounce of profit out of college sport. This is one of the two guys who we are hoping sticks with the NCAA instead of breaking off. I would put absolutely nothing past him.

Nubbrasketball streak appears to be safe

SEC 1-5 so far. We should prob start limiting their bids.

The NCAA app and their website might be the best sports/streaming platform ever created. It's crazy that a one a year thing is 100x better than the straight up garbage ESPN+ platform.
I discovered that the app has a channel that plays one shining moment on a loop, I watched all of them, some observations.
1. UCONN is somehow underrated, they're pretty easily the best college baseball program since the 90's. I think they are hurt by not having a rival and being essentially out of sight during the regular season.
2. The 2009 one shining moment was probably the most emotional one, for K-State fans anyway. People hate it because Jennifer Hudson sung it but they had a shot of Denis sitting on the floor crying after the Butler game, then just a few seconds later they show Huggins on the floor comforting Dasean Butler when he tore his ACL at the end of that elite 8 game.
3. The NCAA/CBS made an all-time one shining moment in place of the missing 2020 tournament, and it's very good.
4. The basketball is clearly better now but the personalities of the game and tension on the floor have been very much muted.

He has made it to the dance every year. 12 sweet sixteens. 5 Elite 8s 2 F4s. Incredible track record.
-
ISU looks like they blew their wad in the Phillips. Halfway through the first half and they have 4pts.
-
The flood plain floppers will pull this out.
-
ISU is going to open a can on WSU in the second half
-
Iowa State's strategy of fouling every possesion on defense and flopping every possesion on offense is quite effective.
-
Undy’s hair looks awful. Illini smoking Duquesne at 1/2time.
-
For everyone dragging the SEC, the Big 12 is shitting the bad just about as bad.
-
I mean our 1,2,3 seeds are still alive.
-
That Oregon/creighton game was wild. Like if someone told me that Oregon wouldn’t attempt a free throw until there was like a minute left in the game, and also only 2 guys would be responsible for all of their 2nd half points I would ask how badly did they get blown out?

Not nearly as good. The second overtime was over a minute in. Oregon gave up a quick 8-0 run and they literally then walked the ball up the court with their heads down and instead of calling a time out, Dana Altman just yelled at his players then the point guard bricked a 30 footer. Altman had an all-time coaching howler at the end of regulation and in the second overtime.

the games have kinda sucked today.

Lol we're only going to get two (if we're lucky) into the Sweet Sixteen out of EIGHT entries. The ACC and Big East were right to complain about us gaming the system. Exposed
-
I forgot about 2 seed Arizona
-
FAU’s Dusty May to Michigan too.

do all ncaa refs suck now? were they just told not to call anything?
i dunno, i know i'm old, but anything goes bball isn't real enjoyable to me.

My bracket really needs GCU to pull this one out.
Baylor and BYU did not reward the faith I placed in them.

I don't want to yell at you, I just don't get the thought process, I never get the thought process. These teams play to their seed more often than not and the big 12 has recently been dominant in the final four. It seems weird to hold the entire conference accountable for Self having a heart attack last year and them being overseeded this year.

Houston’s sudden inability to hit free throws cost me an hour of sleep.
-
Yeah that game had no business being as close as it was. Houston seemed rattled near the end there.
-
Well also aTm couldn’t miss a shot that final 1:30 of regulation.
-
does tsc apply to arizona or not yet? i can't decide.

yes

i've decided that it doesn't.

The difference in these two games is insane. UNC might have something for UConn if they play

That’s insulting to oscar tbh.

UCONN is a T1000
-
Bama/UNC has been great. Almost a shame only one can make it to the E8.
This game was great. The first half was a scene from Backdraft. Kirk Douglass doesn't make it out, you guys.
The second half was wild. It was amazing how Henry just sparked, then the whole offense just became "just dribble down and give Henry the ball until he misses it" and it didn't just work, but he rough ridin' steamrolled them. That kid caught NBA Jams level of fire and could be stopped. He was the best big in the country for 7-10 minutes last night.
10/10 enjoyable.
-
UCONN is a T1000
They are looking awesome so far.
As others have said, it is amazing how many nattys that have collected relative to the small amount of hype (compared to Duke, UNC, KU, UK) they get during the regular season.
We'll see if Houston can reclaim their regular season mojo today.

It's really impressive is UConn's ability to just get Natty's. They have a relatively small amount of F4's (6) and a relatively large number of Championships (5). It's like if they get a certain way in they are inevitable. Most schools drop off with some amount of predictability.
-
Every coach that has been hired at UCONN in the last 35 years has won a Natty.

How big is #30 for NC State? He looks like 350 lbs on TV.

Marquette looked broken in the first half of that game. Dude who hadn’t hit a shot all day got fouled on a 3 pointer at the end of the half and missed all 3 FTs.

He’s a legit OL type

NC State is having the run every team that going into their conference tournament with no hope of being in unless they win that is having. Good lord it's impressive

I *think* I saw DaBigTrain there behind the basket.

nc state is fun.

it would be good if nc state advanced and at the same time unc and duke lost.

Also, NC State also high on the overall conversion rate. 2 Nattys, just 3 (so far) final 4s, and this is the 7th (what!?) E8

If Shead had played another 5 minutes, Houston would have had and insurmountable lead. Oh well.

The games yesterday highlighted how important luck is in the tournament. The games from Friday highlighted that luck doesn’t have to have an impact if you’re as dominant as a team like UConn.
-
Eeesh. UConn is a rough ridin' monster. Champaign is a graveyard right now.

30-0 run. That might be the biggest I’ve seen

I guess Bb needs a run spread rule.

Just fell apart, starting with Arterio Morris raping himself off the team right before the season. Also, our leading scorer and All-American was out the last part of the season. Not enough Dudes. Even if McCullar had been around, still a rickety team with no bench to speak of. We'd have made it to this weekend, but that's it.

But you beat what looks like the Nat'l Champion? KU always plays with incredible confidence at home and I'm not sure what happened on the road this year? The bench wasn't deep but they normally find a way. I will be interested to see what they bring in this year. A ton of KU fans hating on Dujaun was crazy to me.

KU bball "fans" are just the worst. I'm a fan, but not to the point of tearing down kids. Back to the drawing board. I trust in Self to do whatever needs done. He's earned that.

One might argue that younger Bill would have recognized that Knecht was the better player and he would have tried to get him instead of throwing the entire bag at one player who was presumed to be the best player. I wonder if portal season happening while he was essentially in recovery basically eliminated evaluation of the players and he saw what the nerds ranked #1 and just said, okay let's get him.

Hope the ag school from NC beats the blue blood from NC today.
UCONN looks like an unstoppable buzzsaw at this point.

I like NC State. This is one of the first times that I’ll legitimately be rooting for a non TSC team even after my bracket has been busted.

I'm definitely at the point in the tourney where my bracket is so messed up I can just enjoy supporting underdogs.

Before his heart "illness" I would have said the same. I just don't think he's the same dude anymore.
He landed the No. 1 transfer prospect after that, though. And I think he'll come back next year.
That's the thing, he had two first round draft picks and Hunter Dickinson this year and managed to finish 6th in the league. He will always be able to get talent, I just think his intensity/drive to win has diminished.

This is going to be an interesting next 3-5 yrs. I am not saying Bill is done, but I have a feeling his intensity is a medical choice and is the problem. Also, he doesn't seem to create coaches underneath him, so I don't know if he has a support system that he can lean on for a slow downturn or a style adjustment. For that reason, when the time does come, I expect Bill to unexpectedly retire a little earlier than thought, and claim it as a medical thing, or for him to have a couple of extraordinarily bad years and KU chase him off kicking and screaming. I may be wrong.
-
I think it's going to be an interesting 3-5 years for everyone in the new NIL/portal era. Imo Bill will be fine with the right roster and his "intensity" in practice or games or whatever won't matter. And it seems like he is still a colossal redass
-
Before NIL there were two categories of programs.
It’s indisputably true that before NIL there were programs who were both willing and capable of getting players via money.
It’s also indisputably true that that there were programs who were either unwilling or incapable (or both) of getting players via money.
Now, all programs are both willing and capable of getting players via money. Things ARE different now.
Lack of tradition is EASILY overcome with money.

There is only one Billy Self Jr.

Yeah but instead of Quis dropping dimes and breaking the all time assist record they have that gigantic dude under the basket who moves like he’s 130 pounds.

Correct, CBB tourny fans either like heart over height kinda guys or refrigerators making defenders look silly down on the block.

Good game so far. I thought about going again but ended up catching an earlier flight home because holy crap I’m exhausted

I don’t think I’ve witnessed a college big back his defender into the paint from the 3pt line before.

It'll be a hell of a game. I think NC State just has it right now. They just gel and play with reckless abandon that I think will fluster them.

Yeah they're going to make that kid a legend and some of the same people will be calling Angel Reese a thug tomorrow night.

Also, Edey and Burns are disproving my theory that dominant guards are far more important than bigs for making a big run in the Tourney.

If we are about to see a revival of the traditional 1-5 basketball, I am all for it.
-
KU played through their center...
-
Seriously tho
the nba's disregard for the traditional "center" position should theoretically create the opportunity for a bit of a golden age of the position at the collegiate level
-
Also this year has hard kind of a fall off in hot shooting 3 ball teams. So having a big who can get buckets has proven even more a need. So I wonder if like Villanova's 2018 team would've done in this tourny trading 3s for 2s

That 2018 team was so fun to watch. The most impressive CBB team I've seen.

you lost me when you dropped “traditional” into your statement but the last three nba mvp’s were all centers
-
Until the NBA can find use for dudes that can’t close out on the 3-pt line and can’t guard NBA stretch 4s and 3s, and until CBB can force that to be a necessity, there will be a valuable and lucrative (with NiL) role for these dudes in cbb.

do you think Edy gets drafted?
my point is centered around the idea that guys like Tshiebwe and Timme going undrafted represents a shift in NBA player valuation
-
I’ve seen anywhere from fringe lottery (no. 12 pick) to early 2nd rd for Edey.

This Iowa LSU game is fun and high paced. Though, I find the LSU fake eyelashes to be almost as stupid football players with elaborate eye black makeup.

of course Edy will get drafted.
the average amount of athleticism at every position has increased due to a number of reasons, centers aren’t excluded from that. look at wemby, the position and the game evolves with the players.

i love that the girls get their glow on for the games, why not? they make it look easy. we have some eyelash girls on our team too!
and yes, i’ve been looking forward to this game since the bracket was announced. as good as both of these teams are, south carolina is even better. try to catch them this year.

i really like hailey van lith, even though she’s an adidas athlete

I find fake eyelashes really off-putting in general, but the idea of putting them on to play basketball is absurd.

Kinda form and fashion. She started wearing it last year after she had surgery on her leg the year before. She has a rod in her leg and the surgery left a scar she wanted to cover up.

Guys, I don't mind Kim Mulkey, in fact I used to like her, a lot.
not necessarily directed at you but more of a general statement regarding a very polarizing person.
the thing about coach mulkey is that you can respect everything that she has accomplished in her life without necessarily thinking that you like her (even though, if given time with her, i think most people would find her to be very endearing. she obviously draws people to her in her leadership role). this is a woman with an incredible amount of personal and team based success in damn near everything that she has done dating back to her four straight high school state championships and 4.0 grade point average that helped lead her to being her class’s valedictorian.
anyway, I think she makes a lot of people uncomfortable and it’s easier to dismiss her as someone we don’t like instead of looking at all of the things that she does right.
her success speaks volumes.

This is kind of dark, but on my way back the day after my gf's funeral, I was in an airport bar, and I broke the news to the bar that Kobe Bryant just died. What does this have to do with the thread? Nothing, other than squawking at airport bars about basketball-related news. Those were moments I could never forget.

Staley may surpass Pat Summitt and Geno if she keeps this up. Plus, she is doing it in an era where there is more than one elite team at a time in WBB.

Good first half for Edey but it looks like UCONN just has more left in the tank as a team.

Purdue decided to live or die by Edey but he was not up to the task this time.

Also I've mentioned this before but UConn might be the most rural school of its size in the country. Like, calling Storrs a "town" probably makes it seem more significant of a place than it actually is.

Obviously not saying it’s his fault. It just seemed obvious that Purdue had no backup plan.
Edey turned it on a bit at after my post when UConn’s big got in foul trouble, but they never overcame that slump from early in the second half where he went cold.

I really wonder whether that’s a coincidence or not. I definitely feel like some teams are built for tournament rather than conference play.
I always liked the teams with a gimmick like “Press Virginia” or Syracuse with that 2-3 zone. Your in conference opponents will know what to expect and how to break it, but there isn’t much time for tournament opponents to adjust.

not sure if It Just Be Like That, but every time they showed a slo-mo replay where Eddy was involved (both defense and offense) he would just whack the crap out of whoever was in his vicinity. Specifically i'm remembering Eddy going for a slam dunk and the uconn guy tried to block it but his hand went thru the net and it was called goal tending but at the moment the ball rimmed out and Eddy seemed kinda mad that his dunk didn't count in the traditional sense, then on the way down (to the floor) Eddy just smacked that dude right in the mouth.
Another time was on defense the uconn guy drove the lane and did kind of a circus shot over Eddy's outstretched arms and then on the way down Eddy swatted that guy too.
In both cases it didn't really look like anything in real time, and the uconn players didn't try to sell the contact.
I have never played collegiate basketball (or professional) so i'm not sure if that's just how it goes sometimes or if Eddy is kind of a dirty bitch?

I played professionally, but not collegiately.
As to Storrs, it does feel like the middle of nowhere. Closest major metro is Hartford, I think, if you can even call Hartford a major metro. I stayed there for a few days in middle school, and I can't remember a single thing about Storrs other than the campus.

not sure if It Just Be Like That, but every time they showed a slo-mo replay where Eddy was involved (both defense and offense) he would just whack the crap out of whoever was in his vicinity.
Hartford is absolutely a major metro, but when you're in Storrs, it may as well be two hours away. UConn has not traditionally done well with NYC kids because if you really want to stay close to home Storrs is a crap deal. It's 2.5 hours to NYC in good traffic. You can't even take a train from Storrs to NYC or Boston, you have to get to New Haven, which is an hour away, then take the commuter rail to the city.

121,000 souls, per the 2020 census. It's a nice, historic city, featuring Mark Twain's house and some old graveyards, but is that really a major metro?

You looked that up but didn't bother to look up the population of the Hartford Metro? 1.2 million people. Also Hartford, like basically everything between Quincy, MA and Stamford, CT, is a massive sack of crap.

Yup. You're right. I'm wrong.
