started a new thread for stuff with no visible solution in the medium-term (longer is too hard to predict). public transit definitely fits, and i'd add health care as well. neither party is doing anything to solve the problems and don't even appear interested in trying.

With all due respect, wgaf about high speed rail

With all due respect, wgaf about high speed rail
i do, dumbass.

Immigration, police reform, requiring people who take the standard deduction to do their own taxes, and any sort of environmental or major water infrastructure project fall along the same lines. One side doesn't want them at all, the other does want them, but only if they can have them with draconian standards.

You afraid to fly John Madden?

this thread is already a rough ridin' bummer

Well then you’re wasting your time worrying about something that is impractical and unnecessary in the us (especially in the american west)
-
there are suitable corridors on the west coast (including the one currently being built in california). unfortunately we're failing at building them at a price below their value to society.
-
You afraid to fly John Madden?
i'm very whitepilled on airports. small footprint, easy to build, endlessly flexible. probably the transit infrastructure where it's easiest to see a bright future.
-
There are mass transit corridors that make sense pretty much everywhere. It would be great to not need a vehicle.

to me something like immigration is different. democrats, by and large, have good ideas on how to improve immigration, they just aren't able to win enough votes to implement them. that is different than the situation i'm trying to discuss where both parties have bad ideas.

That is a false statement

I do too

Most long distance travel is completely needless, the American govt doesn’t need to fund high speed rail, its failure to do so is not some sort of travesty of American government. That’s all I’m saying.
-
imo, this is doubly insidious. not only are there the structural, unavoidable, inefficiencies, but the people working on the project aren't idiots. they know that the fact of their employment is considered to be one of the deliverables the public is receiving for their dollar. imo, that inevitably contributes to a mindset where people understand that a substantial part of their work task is to be employed.

it would go a long way in terms of giving people the ability to reside in places that are a lot more affordable (or otherwise desireable) than the places they work. Imagine not having to choose between living in a shithole you can barely afford or having a 2 hour commute to work each way. wow!
-
I think we can all get behind projects like Gav Newsomes
$38 $50, $100, $125, $150, $178 billion dollar fast regular ol train to nowhere

No, it wouldn’t

1. Socialized medicine - our crap sucks. Our life expectance is going backward and a bunch of other important markers are awful compared to other developed nations
2. Need to incentivize family. Child credit or something of the like. crap is too expensive and a downward pop is going to suck balls for a lot of ppl.
3. Remove ability for PACs and foreign money to participate in elections at any level. If you aren't a person and a citizen, your money should be no good in our election process.
4. Term limits on house and senate. 2 is all you should get
5. Cap on age to serve as an elected official. Should have to be 60 or younger to begin your term/s, otherwise, sorry grandpa, but you won't be alive for the world your work will help build and therefore can eff off.
6. We need a recall process for unfaithful elected officials. See Kyrsten Sinema.
7. We need to start building a bunch of nuclear plants now. IDGAF that they take 7-10 yrs to build. Gotta start them sometime.

Declining population could be fixed easily enough through immigration policy.

I'm asking him to explain further, because I'm not persuaded by his explanation (yet).

Yea if we get the jump on China that’s a great strategy.
-
i thought it was pretty well understood that we had an overpopulation problem? Is that not the case? (I mean unless the rationale is we are going to need lots of bodies to throw into the meat grinder for the inevitable looming war with China or whoever, in which case, i mean, i don't like it but i guess)
Otherwise CNS i don't like to see that list ITT because i would love for all of those things to be real and i don't like confronting the reality that they have no shot in heck

You can't fund programs like social security with a declining population. The world does have too many people, though. So the US could solve its population issues and also fight global warming by not incentivizing kids and loosening up its immigration policy.

Chinas population is projected to get cut in half in the next 80 years.

well the ratio of men to women in china is patently absurd so unless we see a rise in devil's threeway situations, i'd say that's a pretty safe bet.

the problem with the democrats approach to fixing health care is that they have diagnosed the problem incorrectly (the problem with the republican approach is that they don't have an approach).

health care is profitable but not for the hospitals
-
recently listened to an old podcast on healthcare, and they drew the conclusion that elective meds and surguries are the largest drivers of cost in America. We drug and operate for things that would be unthinkable to do in most of the world.
-
health care is profitable but not for the hospitals
the twitter account links to a substack article with more detail (that i haven't read). at any rate, health insurance company profits are also not a significant driver of u.s. health care costs.

Doesn't single payer fix this issue? Pharma has to stop bending people over if there's reduced buyers driving up the pieces because of demand. The government telling pharma what they're willing to pay seems like a much better system.
-
Also no one should feel bad for hospitals not profiting as much as their peers in socialized countries, not when executive salaries in that industry looks the way it does.
https://www.healthaffairs.org/do/10.1377/forefront.20220208.925255/
In the world of nonprofit pay scales for executives, hospitals are outliers. A 2021 report from the Economic Research Institute (ERI) found that the average annual CEO pay in most nonprofit industries was between $100,000 and $200,000 in 2018. The two exceptions were university CEOs, who were paid an average of $350,000, and hospital CEOs, who were paid on average $600,000. But the average belies the true dimensions of executive salaries in health care systems. In 2018, Bernard Tyson, then-CEO of nonprofit health care giant Kaiser Permanente, made nearly $18 million, making him the highest-paid nonprofit CEO in the nation. The previous year, the top 10 highest paid nonprofit health system executives each made $7 million or more. Even the bottom 25 percent of nonprofit hospital CEOs enjoyed annual compensation of about $185,000 according to ERI—more than the highest-paid quartile for CEOs in nonprofit arts and culture, environmental, human services, and religion-related organizations.
