Title: Official KC Current Thread
Post by: ChiComCat on October 24, 2022, 11:05:58 AM
I didn't see a thread for them.

Playing for the NWSL title next weekend against Portland after beating the OL Reign 2-0 last night on the road.  The Reign had Rapinoe and Lavelle from the USNT so it seemed like a pretty big upset.  The Current have also lost only once in like their last 15 games after starting the season as hot garbage AND losing their best player to injury.  The Current goalkeeper is an incredible stud (studette?)

I thought it was worth mentioning as it's a squad with high watchability and likability.  A lot fewer embellished injuries and KC kept attacking throughout despite being underdogs and holding a slim lead.

This thread was much needed, thank you!

While they were a fun team, I don't know that their style was fun to watch for most of the season. They had a 14 match unbeaten streak but still had a negative goal differential for the season. They played a crap ton of 1-0, 1-1, 0-0 matches in that streak. The lack of offense is understandable given they lost their three best attacking players to season ending injuries.

They seemed to find some offense late in the season. This run is great, they're probably a year ahead of schedule, given this run isn't even on the backs of the high profile players they acquired this off season.

I'm trying to decide if I'm going to drive to KC Live from Manhattan on Saturday night. I really want to but I'd be late to the start of the match and I'm going to have my 3 year old with me. He loves sports and crowds but I'm not sure if I want to deal with him after three events in one day.

The Current have the best color scheme in American professional sports.

Given that Teal is one of my favorite colors, absolutely, I have the Teal Mobile shirt, and their kit from last year

I have a red long sleeve. I would like a teal shirt but all but one current design have distressed screen prints on them and I don't like that. The only design that doesn't, the teal town shirt, is sold out in my size.

I have tickets to the watch party in Union Station on Saturday night but I don't think I'll make it from Manhattan in time.

That match was ass, but I didn't feel the least bit of emotion about it after the football game. Kinda surprised how flat we were given how emotional matches against the thorns generally have been.

Oh well, I'll still be beboping around Johnson County, on Sunday, in my red and teal

Big win to open the stadium. Wish it was closer to the 5-1 score it once was, but still. Really cool to way to open the season regardless.

Chawinga is phenomenal.  In her limited first game minutes, I thought she was incredibly fast.  Now I think she is just as skilled.

Why is it so hard for these guys and players to eff people outside of the building?
Quote
The Kansas City Current has fired the head of its medical department, Carlos Jimenez, for violating the NWSL’s non-fraternization policy, the club confirmed to The Athletic on Wednesday. Multiple sources briefed on the situation said the policy violation concerned a relationship with a Current player.

Jimenez joined the Current last December. He worked as a physical therapist for the Washington Spirit last season and for the U.S. women’s national team from 2019 to 2021.

“When we learned of (Jimenez’s) actions in violation of club and league policies, he was immediately terminated,” the Current said in a statement. “We remain committed to making sure our policies and practices ensure a safe space for our players and our staff.”

Jimenez did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

The NWSL instituted a non-fraternization policy, in addition to a policy on workplace discrimination, harassment, and bullying, as part of the league’s reforms following the allegations of sexual coercion against Paul Riley and subsequent joint investigation.

The non-fraternization policy applies to all NWSL personnel, including players, coaches, owners, managers, trainers, and any other employees of the league or its clubs. The policy states that “NWSL supervisors may not engage in, develop, continue, or pursue any romantic and/or sexual relationships or encounters, even when consensual, with any employee (including NWSL players or trialists) over whom they currently have direct or indirect supervisory authority or management influence.”

A team’s head of medical would fall under the policy’s definition of a “supervisor,” which includes any staff member who could “responsibly direct (employees), including as to performance and medical decisions, address concerns or exert influence over such actions in the interest of the NWSL or a team.”

Jimenez is the second NWSL team staff member to be publicly dismissed for violations of the policy in 2024. Last month, the NWSL announced that Houston Dash goalkeeping coach Matt Lampson had been fired by the club following an investigation concerning NWSL policy violations. The league found that Lampson violated the non-fraternization policy and the code of conduct in place for NWSL coaches, and additionally suspended him through the remainder of the 2024 season.

I went to the stadium for the first time this weekend.  The stadium was great.  You can tell they did some things to keep the cost down without really affecting the fan experience.  There isn't a bad seat.  The food selection is great and the mobile ordering looks very useful.  It should be a great size for concerts too once they get that going.

How did you get there and how long did it take you to get out of the area?

The end of that match was wildly frustrating.

We ubered to the casino and ate there at Chickie & Petes (pretty good chain!) before walking over.  I wanted to eat at the stadium but the game time was so late it didn't make sense.  After, we walked to City Market with the masses which was about 1.5 miles.  In hindsight, I would've walked back to the casino and got an uber from there.  They did seem to have a lot of busses hauling people back and forth to City Market.  I would see 4 busses stopped at the same intersection and another 2-3 heading back for another load.  It's a bit of PITA at the moment but you can tell they're really trying to manage it until the streetcar comes through.

streetcar is great in theory, but how many people does each one hold?  a couple hundred?  running every 8-10 minutes, seems like an ineffective way to get out of the area quickly if a lot of people are planning on using it once it's expanded.

the streetcar continues to be the novelty that it was designed to be.  it is not mass transit and never was meant to be.  come at me titola.

I mean I'd assume on gameday they'll be more, they usually run 4 during high traffic times already. I also assume after all the entertainment stuff is built down there (cause there is jack crap of that rn) less people will leave en masse at the same time. Obviously there will be a  rush but after a game is done there will probably be enough people deciding to go have dinner or drinks right there that'll allow for it to probably be not as bad as it is now.
