John Lithgow. He's amazing. Extremely versatile from comedy to drama and nails every single thing he's ever been in.
Obviously his performance in 'Harry and the Hendersons' began my idolization of John Lithgow which continued through '3rd Rock From The Sun'. Now more recently I've watched 'The Crown' in which he absolutely crushes his performance as Winston Churchill. I'm a big fan of Gary Oldman and his portrayal as Winston in 'Darkest Hour' and thought no one would ever touch it, but then J-Lith comes along and makes me question everything.
Now I'm watching 'The Old Man' with Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow is absolutely crushing this drama performance as well.
What do you guys think of John Lithgow? I love him.
-
I only really recall him from Third Rock From the Sun, but I saw him in a movie on HBO recently with Robin Williams and John was a cross-dresser.
-
He's great. A very enjoyable actor.
-
He seemed very believable as a preacher who banned dancing.

He was great in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

Cross reference with 80s/90s country thread but I'll add Dwight Yoakam. Cause he'd be in a movie and I'd always be like ohh, man, that's Dwight Yoakam.

I think the first season is better, but the lithgod one is very good too!

Matthew Lillard.

What was the movie where Lithgow played a villain? It was probably his only dud role because he wasn't believable as an evil tough guy, IMO.
-
Any one of the 3-4 people that are in all of Adam Sandler's movies. No one knows who they are, but they always do great jobs.

That was the smash hit/documentary called Cliffhanger and he was a decent villain IMO.

John was great in Orange County as the estranged dad. “I will eat your face!” & him getting flustered seeing Leslie Mann flirting with the pool boy.
I just remembered 12 years later he played the same character as Leslie Mann’s dad.
-
He wasn’t very believable as a woman in The World According To Garp.

if J-Lith had one mis-step I would have to say I very much resented his performance in the Progresso soup commercials. atrocious.

Matthew Lillard.
Welcome back wacky!
-
John Lithgow has played a lot of villains and he has crushed them all. Remember he was that racist senator on The Tuskegee Airmen? Any role where he has to have a slight southern drawl he absolutely kills.
-
He was amazing in Ricochet

Lithgow freaking out on a plane in Twilight Zone: the Movie, and then Aykroyd joins in for a surprise finish! Doesn’t get better than that.

He's good in that Dahmer show.

I’ve always found him annoying. It’s his voice.
I recognize he is talented but I pass on a lot of his stuff

Guys it seems there is some confusion about this thread. It's not a debate, there is no debate, it's John Lithgow. I guess you can name other actors if you want, just know that they are not The Most Underrated Actor Of Our Time.

I'm watching Midnight Run right now and I'm beginning to think Joe Pantoliano is in this category. I watched The Fugitive last weekend and noticed him there, too. He's in so many amazing movies. He had to know somebody.

I just this moment realized he's the "ignorance is bliss" guy from the Matrix!
I'll also throw Gary Oldman into this category.
-
I'll also throw Gary Oldman into this category.
the guy is universally regarded as one of the greats of his generation. he has 1 best actor oscar win and 3 nominations. DENIED.

Benicio del Toro and John Goodman.

Gary Oldman will always be Sid Vicious to me. I was dating a girl in the early 2000s who was obsessed with Sid & Nancy, Harold & Maude and The Wall. She was very similar to Nancy, crazy af.

I mean, the thread topic is most underrated. I could make a strong case that (Col.) Ashley Judd - star of the 90s suspense thriller Double Jeopardy - never receiving an Oscar nomination and only being twice nominated for a golden globe (and snubbed both times) - is arguably the crime of the century. The greatest miscarriage of justice ever.
-
Mike Meyers has tremendous range.

Another name for consideration: michael caine
Don’t get me wrong. Dude is absolutely rated. But underly. Possibly the most underly, even.
Evidence: a muppet Christmas carol. You probably didn’t even remember he was in it. And despite acting alongside a bunch of silly muppets, the man delivers a got damn magnum opus.
More evidence: as I was typing out this blogpost, holding his face in my minds eye, typing the words in his iconic accent and cadence, and I couldn’t think of his name. Had to Google. So underrated. Wow!

All these suggestions lmao

This thread has basically turned into "have you guys heard of this Daniel Day Lewis character?" my goodness.
Here's one to get us back on track. Paul Walter Hauser will win an acting award some day.

Wait, what? Didn't he already win an Emmy for Black Bird?

A Primetime Emmy. Wasn't even nominated for an Emmy. Although this made me stumble upon the fact that he won a Golden Globe for Black Bird.

Kind of OT but one actor who is incredibly appropriately rated…Walt Goggins. Right where he needs to be on the Critical Acclaim scale

i'm not going to call this guy overrated, i'm not going there. but has anyone been able to leverage one minor role into 20+ years of doing the same type of character work as well as JK Simmons?
