Tang can get us there if we give him the resources.

Baby steps. Recruit on a national level. Play deep into the tourney. Make the FF. Win Championship.

not sure that's how this works

Getting in the tourny is the first step, there is ultimately a lot of luck that goes with being good in something like the tournament.
-
We should probably cheat tbh

No qluestion luck, such as playing 2 teams that just lost a key player the game beore, is involved. But getting in the tourney a lot helps increase the odds.

Yup, exactly. I mean you can look at both our more recent elite 8 runs in 2010 and 2018. If that foul was called correctly on Clemente instead of Merriweather, we walk out of that S16 game w/o having to go into OT. Makes for a less fun overall game, but then we aren't gassed vs Butler, and who knows, we make that run to the Champ game instead of them.
Or 2018, having UVA bounced by UMBC was enormous luck, and then we got past Kentucky in a great game, but then planted vs Loyola. That was another chance we could've used to get to the FF, and who knows what happens.
Now, it's pretty obvious 2010 team was better than 2018, but really you just gotta be the best team (with luck) through 6 games in 3 weekends, so who knows what would happen.
But it all starts with making the tourny consistently, once that happens, you generally got the "are we good" box checked and then it's a dose of luck after that. It'd be interesting to see but I doubt any program that goes to the tourny on a regular basis, even if they aren't elite doesn't at least have deep tourny runs, hell, we literally have done that this last decade.

Variance is a better term than luck. You simply have to be one of the 12 or so teams with a legitimate shot year after year. Eventually the cream rises to the top.
Tang’s ceiling hopefully includes top 4 seeds about half of the time. Or at least a third of the time.

Let's just cheat.

Um how about bass fishing or soil judging?
Dumbass.

Yeah we missed our window on the cheating to win I think.

How do you even cheat now that it's legal to pay players? It's only a matter of time before dream teams start in bball. Then, the Starting 5,LLC endowment.

There are still plenty of rules involved

The majority of Phog hoops posters believe we should claim the 2020 title because we finished the season #1 in the polls, would have been the #1 overall seed had the tournament occurred, and we would "absolutely" have won the tournament. You absolutely need some lucky breaks in order to win. That much is obvious from KU's run this year, but even in 2008, some player named Steph Curry for Davidson had a three point shot that would have sent us packing. Luckily, he missed. So yes, you have to be really good and somewhere between pretty and really lucky.

USA Today had an article just before the Final Four noting how the NCAA literally sent Bill Self formal docs telling him he is a cheater. Since then, he has won 81 games(now 82), won two conf titles and now a natty.
Seems like this is the right path to me.

Yup, while happy for you spracs, I think another thing I always think about for the 2008 game was if Memphis would even hit FTs with anything better than shaq numbers it also wouldn't have even come to Chalmer's 3 to send it to OT.
The tourny isn't as random as flipping a coin but it definitely is like rolling a d20 and how good you are is how many of those numbers count as a W for you, but you can never have all 20, the other team at least gets 1, and you have to do it 20 times.

1997 Jayhawks were best basketball team I ever saw in person. They exited the tourney early (lost to the eventual national champs).

this thread title makes me think of how dumb football is as a sport lmao. we're basically a midmajor football team.

IIRC Curry passed up the shot to get the ball to his wide open teammate who missed. Jaren or Jared something.

Yeah, you're right. I just remember Steph whipping our ass in that game.

I've seen this a lot from not only KU fans but some national media without the least bit of irony considering they weren't the #1 team in the country, at any point this season, or the overall 1 seed in this tournament. Nor were the overall #1 seed in 2008 or 1988. I wonder if someone on the phone pointed this very obvious thing out and how the mental gymnastics worked around this.

Wait, Spracne, are you reviving KU's claim to Helms national titles too? The pretending that you and your fellow KU fans indulge in is almost as strong as the pretend Helms titles.

12 of the last 15 national champions have been a 1 seed so I think we should probably do that so we can get lucky.

I don't believe I've ever discussed Helms titles in this thread or anywhere else on this blog. Outside of haters and losers (many), no one really cares.

It's just a matter of time. There's going to be so much money flowing into Manhattan now that NIL's will be handed out like candy at Halloween. I wonder when the Pac-10 and BIG start calling to get some of those sweet research ops in what is rapidly becoming the Silicon Valley of bio-science.
Meanwhile, Lawrence turns down another clothing distribution center.
