I just smashed a turkey club from Schlotzky's, with an extra side of honey mustard and it was delightful. There's nothing like a good chain sandwich on a whim. What's your favorite sandwich shop?
-
It's "NJ Mikes". Also, wtf is up with calling it "NJ Mikes"?
-
lol. Abbreviations, bro. New Jersey is a territory of mine and we abbreviate a lot.
Also, I love Quiznos because of their pepper bar, but there's like only one in KC.
-
Quiznos by a mile. The one in St Joe closed like 6 years ago. We have like 6 Subways though, stupid St Joe idiots.
-
i find it very hard to believe there is only one quizno's in the entire metro. i feel like i see them everywhere but i guess not
-
While Firehouse and Schlotzky’s are better sandwiches, JJ is my go-to. I prob avg about 1.5 JJ Vitos or Spicy East Coast Italians a week.
-

It's crazy to think about, but the store locator only shows the one downtown and one in Independence:
https://restaurants.quiznos.com/

I wish I had a Goodcents near me, but knowing how way leads on to way, it's Jersey Mike's by a mile.

Love the spice bar at Firehouse. Love JJ's bread too, but I hate how they have limited sides. I like to really stack my sandwiches. Banana peppers, jalapenos, pickles, etc.

We have one close to me and I avoid it at times because of their manager. This will probably make me sound like a bad person, but the kid is so over the top nice and full of life, it makes the trip awkward. He's like "How's my main man doing today?!, What's up King?, Bro, how we killing life today?, etc" and he goes on and on and shares some random story and there's days I just can't.

Just make my sandwich bro! JJ would have had this thing done 5 minutes ago.

One time, me & the Mrs went together and he went on and on about what a lucky guy I was and said more king related stuff and he kept calling her queen and then asked us if we were making babies and how we should try to procreate more and it took him like 5 minutes to realize I asked for banana peppers. I'm going to hell. Super great guy. I like his outlook on life. I just want a sandwich tho.

I've had Firehouse a handful of times and have never been impressed.

Nah, I get it. Sometimes that kind of positivity can be overwhelming. It's appreciated but sometimes too much. Part of customer service is reading your customer's body language.

I would never return
-
Quiznos was great back in the day! Their Black Angus steak sub was the goat of chain sandwiches. Now I just hit up Jimmy Johns and Goodcents.
-
My problem with the Quiznos is the quality control between stores is pretty bad. I like the JJ bread but overall their sandwiches I feel like I can make at home.
-
i didn't realize Quiznos still existed at all

That store downtown is awful. Badly managed. Their pepper bar always looks like it's been out for days too.

JJ's is barely a step above Subway IMO.

This seems like a Seinfeld episode to me, but I can't quite pin it down. Ramon the pool boy and Elaine pretending to be deaf for her car service popped into my head, but I feel there's another episode with Jerry that I can't quite put my finger on that more closely resembles 420cats predicament.
-
I like the giardiniera at potbelly. sometimes when I get a sandwich I buy a jar of it.
-
We don't really eat fast food type stuff, but I did a bit when I travelled and the correct answer is a good Potbelly. I would grab them a couple times a week when I was up north. Great hot sandwiches and soups. I tried the one on Johnson drive that closed and it was terrible every time. It was odd, because I love Potbelly. My other answer is based on a sandwich you can eat while driving. Jimmy Johns was my go to. Very simple and delicious and it didn't get all over me when driving.
-
the meat at subway is so gross. jj meat has the taste and texture of meat at least.
-
also appreciate the "NJ Mikes" instead of Jersey Mikes in the vote. made me grin.

yeah that was my primary thinking too. Then those airport ones. Woof. It was nice in a hungover pinch though

I do like a good sub. Of the chain places here in OR:
1. Jersey Mike's
2. Jimmys Johns
3. Port of Subs
miss Goodcents and Planet Sub

Jer Mike's and Potbelly are far clear of everyone else.
Wichita cats, is City Bites still a thing? If so they are also amaze balls.
Capriotti's is the biggest over priced rip off O.A.T.
-
Firehouse is also severely overpriced.
Wacky, being a good Midwesterner I'm surprised you didn't include McCallister's.

I love Firehouse because they'll default give you mayo + oil + vinegar all on the same damn sandwich and it's a big, sloppy, yummy mess.
Basically, I like them all. Even Subway.

True story about the Manhattan Goodcents. I may have mentioned this at some point. Anywho, Mrs SF would eat there like 5 times a week minimum. The dude working there absolutely loved her, like to the point of creepy and never charged her. I would go in with her every once in a while and he would charge me at first then he just started giving me free sandwiches too. Even if I went in there by myself he would never charge me.
If you post here Goodcents guy, I'm sorry you never got to bang Mrs SF (that I know of), but thank you for all the free sandwiches.
-
That’s a beautiful story

someone told me they were originally from Columbia MO but i do not have the energy to look it up. canco they rule. similar to potbelly style if i had to compare. their pizza is not bad also! kind of a spicy red sauce and you can eat a whole one easily, no shame thread
-
PepperJax.
PepperJax is delicious a.f.
Aggieville's PepperJax didn't make it. I liked it but I always had to ask for light seasoning or it was salty AF. I get Pickleman's whenever I find myself on Mass St in Lawrence at closing time.
-
I also was a big Yello/Planet Sub guy but have all the a Planet Subs gone away? Is it no longer a chain?
-
My daughter loves Which Wich. Their fries and shakes are great, their subs are not. Since Potbelly also has amazing shakes and great sandwiches, I only go to WW when she wants to go. WW does have the best rewards program of any restaurant I've seen.
-

Lawrence still has theirs.

This thread has taught me I need to go on a BURGERMANIA! adventure of chain sandwich shops!

there are still some planet subs in kc somehow. always kind of gross to me but no judge

Yello Sub is so good. Also, the worst service imaginable. But, they serve beer, so all is forgiven.

I think it started in Columbia MO. I used to get it quite often from the local waldo chapter but it went downhill suddenly and I haven't been back in like 4 years. Maybe I should try again.
-
We went twice and never went back because of the Waldo location sucking complete ass and Mrs. Wacky hating them.

There are scissors, clippers, and a razor involved. Also a beard shape/trim. It takes about 30 minutes and costs $45 dollars how much do I tip?

Oh, sorry sir. Didn't realize I was talking to a $45 haircut man. You're above my advice. I get a $25 cut and tip a fiver. Sometimes more if she presses teh boobs into me a lot.

Sounds a lot like Sports Clips, as they has some well-endowed gals cutting my hair. Most didn't do a very good job, but I love the haircutting process. Also tip a 5er, since I didn't want to spoil them.

We have a Goodcents on the other side of town, 25-30 minutes away. I’ll eat there 3-4 times a year, but it’s not the same as what I grew up with.
We just had Jersey Mike’s open a mile away & it’s my new favorite.

Jersey Mikes is the best but its $15 for a whole sub. You know who has the best overall deal for a sammy?
Ole Casey's General Store. Its like $7 for a footlong and its above the Subway level of ingredients. The only issue I've run into is that sometimes it takes forever for them to finish making your sub, just very slow.

They put a Casey’s a mile from my house. It looks like a grocery store before a snow storm all the time. The staff are the slowest moving people I’ve seen. They spent a ton a money building a nice new building & there’s never anyone there. I’d like to try this, but I don’t have 30 minutes to wait for a sandwich.

A whole sub at Jer Mike's is well over a foot though, either 14 or 15 inches and they use the most meat, by far.
Casey's subs are very good, and like you said, well priced.

If their website is to be believed they have locations from Arizona to Michigan, however their website shouldn't be believed because I know the Iowa location they have on there has been closed for nearly 2 years.
Anyway, it's nice to see that little old sub shop that started in Lawrence has/had so many locations. My first Yello Sub trip was during the Sunflower State Games in 1999.

NuSubway is somehow worse. Like two months ago I had a craving for a subway meatball sub, it has a very distinct taste and younger me used to eat them like they were a cancer cure. Well I experienced immediate regret, that was a very long footlong.
As shitty as subway is, old subway did have an amazing wrap. Southwest Chipotle Steak wrap. Look at this.
Tomato basil wrap, steak, monterey cheddar cheese, guacamole, jalapeno peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, green peppers and chipotle southwest sauce.

I miss it

lol did you watch the video? i did for reasons i do not know but homeboy gave your wrap a 4/10.

It’s a nostalgic experience. It’s why I still don’t give up on Subway. Subway in the 90’s was epic.
Expound, please.
I don’t know how to put it into words. I just remember their older stores and the smells and how much I loved going their as a kid. They suck compared to the other stores, but still give them my business from time to time.
-
We went twice and never went back because of the Waldo location sucking complete ass and Mrs. Wacky hating them.
oh we remember
-
I always liked that subway had red onion and spinach as veggie options

Subway is literally the closest place from both my house and office to get any kind of food. I go to the one by my office maybe twice a month when I need something fast. I've never once been to the one by my house.
I'm a turkey sand guy and subway recently changed to a thinner cut turkey and it's actually a lot better than it was. The bread has been so weird for years now though.
-
Doesn't Subway have like 8 breads now?
-
Subway has a great honey mustard, in case if there’s any other HM fans out there.

Huge fan. It's also easily made poorly. Thanks for the tip!

 I really like Quiznos too. I’m sure you hit that up when you go tho.

I’m literally at Pickleman’s right now! OMG

I miss schlotzkis

what do you get there? One opened by my office but hardly ever go.

that downtown location finally opened? lol
i truthfully don’t like any of these places and would consider any meal from one a failure on my part
they’re just not good and there’s so many better options

Wow, please pass the brie and cab sauv, Reginald.

When I was at Kansas State U subway was doing their $5 footlongs and $3 cold cut combo/Meatball subs on Tuesdays or something. I crushed so many of their subs.
I still get Subway about once a year but it's typically because I'm driving somewhere and there is a subway attached to the gas station.

Opened right before the pandemic kicked off

lol, I didn't watch it to the end, he was pretty bullish on it after the first two bites. I really wanted y'all to see what it looks like, the look of the wrap actually matched the pictures subway put out.

Yes. 2.99 Tuesday for a cold cut.

Bowling alley subway. Always a line and I did the same.

It is!

Yeah I like Jason's

I'm trying something new at my local goodcents. I placed the order online today, so I can just pick it up and will have less face time with my guy.
-
Good idea
Also. Goodcents used to have a chicken parm sandwich that was incred.

It worked! :excited:

We were already on thin ice with regional chains like Goodcents, and most regular sub chains can't really compete w/ specialty shops like Schlotzky's (sp?) for quality.
Get this thread under control OP.

Jason's seems a stretch.

NJ Michael's is very good, but I'm surprised at their strong lead. Unless you get a melty cheesy one, they can be a bit dry.

If I'm wanting a sandwich, my go-to place is Eatzi's.

Catching up on this thread:
Goodcents is great. You naysayer people make me sick. Their bread is just on a totally other level. A little fun fact about Goodcents is that (at least at one point) had the greatest failure rate of any franchise, food or otherwise! http://cantercommercialre.com/documents/The%2025%20Riskiest%20Franchises%20for%20Lenders%201_26_09%20NuWire%20Investor.pdf (http://cantercommercialre.com/documents/The%2025%20Riskiest%20Franchises%20for%20Lenders%201_26_09%20NuWire%20Investor.pdf)
Picklemans is OK -- they've got some decent options. Their italian beef doesn't do it for me though -- chicago snobbery sticks with me. They've got some pretty good stuff though.
Love planet sub. Sometimes when I go to the planet sub downtown I see Stan Weber there and he and i talk about how great Landry played against OU this season.
I also have entered a Jason's Deli renaissance. Their location downtown just closed their dining room for a bit, but until that happened, I would go there and hound down a steak poboy and spend the afternoon with the soft-serv machine, which is free! There's nothing they can do to interfere with your soft serve intake. One day I was on cone 8 or so and an employee came over and asked if I had had enough ice cream and I said "no...and you know what, I don't think Jason would like to hear about you hassling me...would you like me to call Jason and find out?" and the employee walked away haha.
The last time I ate at subway was in 2016 in Waukegan, Illinois. It was a Friday during lent and I ordered a cheese pizza from there wtf.
I've never had NJ Mike's. My sandwich intake is entirely dependent on what is close to me and NJ Mike's is never really the closest good option.

The penny club at goodcents was money

if anything they are a bit wet. you have to ask them to hold the O&V, otherwise it's like not even car-safe

Yeah, I don't get his comment at all. They drench that crap.

Yeah, I've had Jason's in like 8 different states
Kansas
Oklahoma
Iowa
Missouri
Nevada
Florida
Maryland
Okay, 7

Jer Mike's recently ruined a light gray pullover I have. O&V squirted out on the pullover. I treated it and washed it three times and the stain never came out.
Their hot subs are very dry, in fact I used to love their phillys but I won't order from there again. Their cold subs are very wet. Do you not get the "Mike's Way?" That's where all their juice is, in the Mike's Way ordering.
Jer Mike's also has a very good rewards program, not as good as Which Wich but good nonetheless.

i’ve been to the jason deli a few times, a few key takeaways-
1) the menu makes cheesecake factory’s menu look small by comparison
2) it’s slightly less expensive than capital grille
3) it wasn’t good by any stretch of the imagination
4) jason can shove his deli up his ass

I've lived across the street from a Jason's Deli for 3.5 years and I've never been. LET THAT SINK IN.

As already mentioned I eat it a fair amount and can't disagree with any of this. I should also mention I haven't been there post COVID. I went to Jason's when I wanted a good salad. I preferred Jason's salad bar to Dillon's or Hy-Vee.

free ice cream though and if they try and hassle you you can threaten to have jason fire their ass.
the steak po boy is legitimately really good btw.

There's my mistake. Next time!

Tried Mike's once or twice, but didn't enjoy. I have a free sub coupon burning a hole in my pocket rn. Will try "Mike's way" and report back.
I'm expecting angels to dance on my tongue.

What do you guys think about Potbelly?

Use to love it, until they closed the one near me and now I have no idea where they'd be here. I like their hot peppers.

Jason's salad bar is pretty solid and the reason I go there.

Their sandwiches are pretty good but what Potbelly does better than everyone else is everything else. First of all Zapps chips :excited: their salads, cookies, and shakes are all better there than any other chain restaurant. I haven't had any of their soups but I may try some chili tomorrow.
Jer Mike's got my vote because this is ultimately about sandwiches and they have better sandwiches than everyone else mentioned. Their Italian, Mike's Way, is the best sandwich I've ever had.

Do they still have it now?

Walked into goodcents just now and our guy was rapping to a customer. Had to walk right out and head to Pizza Man after that for an Italian beef sandwich instead. Not today, Hitler!
