Title: Omaha Zoo
Post by: schreds21 on May 28, 2021, 10:21:24 AM
Looks like the Schreds family is going to be making a road trip to Omaha this weekend to go to the zoo.  Travelling Sat., go to zoo on Sun, come home Mon.  @steve dave, any pointers the zoo (or Omaha in general)? Good places to eat for a family of 3 with a soon to be 6 year old?

When I was in 6th grad, my middle school did a field trip to the Omaha zoo from Sioux City. We had a bus with TV's on it and watched the movie Ed starring Matthew Leblanc and a badass chimpanzee baseball player. I was super excited for this trip, because I just got a fresh new Nike shirt that I was wearing that day. Anyways, when we walked into the zoo, I immediately got pooped on by a bird and the total day was ruined. I was the butt of all jokes and I didn't recover from that catastrophe for a solid month. Be careful out there on those Omaha Zoo streets, schreds!

Maybe I should take an umbrella (for bird poo)!

I'm sure it'll be packed and it makes for a long day for little ones if you try to get it all in.  If that's a concern, I would get a mp and prioritize

Get there before it opens. Hit the sea lions and indoor exhibits first.

Our kids liked doing that suspension bridge where you can walk over the river from Nebraska to Iowa. A nice lady made balloon animals for the kids at Spaghetti Warehouse (Works?) after we got done at the zoo (this was a long time ago, she may have gone home by now.)

Blatt is good downtown. The Old Market is a fun place to just walk around.

Gorilla exhibit is closed for remodeling which sucks bigtime. Do the aquarium, nocturnal exhibit, and jungle first thing because they are indoors with restricted paths and when it gets packed they suck crap. Outside parts less so.

UP rail road museum not bad.  They had a mystery murder thing there last time we visited at their union Station.

That places is cool. Went there with my dad in law two years ago when we were in Omaha to see the steam locomotive.

Well, just walked in the house from the zoo, frustrated by how much crap was closed or not on display. That little children's park behind the desert dome was nice tho. I don't think it existed last time we were there.

Wrapping up our annual Schreds Family memorial day trip.  Way more stuff open at the zoo this year than last.  Had 3 delicious seared ahi tuna tacos at Hook and Lime.  All around enjoyable trip.

On the annual pilgrimage.  Sitting at Zio's pizzeria downtown.  It's busy as eff in here.  No SD sightings yet.

Omaha Zoo was a ritual for the 8 boys growing up.  We had friends in Sioux Falls, so it was a great place to meet.  Usually did the zoo and the dad's would take in a CWS game or two at Rosenblatt before it was really popular.  Kids would swim.  UP museum at union station. Wander the Con Agra campus who was my employer at the time.

I think in our time the aquarium, rain forest, and desert dome were new attractions.

I am old enough to remember Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom TV show growing up myself.

I can remember some MOWK myself.   Omaha zoo has become a bit of a ritual for the Schreds family as well.  This is our 4th year coming up here on Memorial day weekend. Big fans of the aquarium and the American swamp at the bottom of the desert dome.  Mrs Schreds and lil Schreds like the kiddo area as well (although today splash park and little river were closed so that sucked.  We enjoy Omaha.  Kind if hope one of these years we forego the zoo and spend the weekend doing other stuff.   Usually too wiped out after the zoo to do anything other than go eat (Hook & Lime ftw) and go back to the hotel and swim.  Hopefully have an irl Steve Dave encounter someday as well.

Gotta love this level of midwest city pride! What is the most worn OMA shirt up there Mr. Dave?
