It's an interesting topic and the pov perspective from the article was interesting in a voyeuristic sense, but I think she shortchanged the rationale(s) underlying the death penalty.

I think the death penalty is wrong, but its purpose isn't just for closure/catharsis.  There's something to be said for punitive justice: "you did something society deems abhorrent enough to be put to death for."  That the entire exercise is unpleasant to witness shouldn't have come as a surprise to our girl, Liz.

The specific reason given by every prosecutor is for closure/catharsis so it was a good meditation on what that actually means and why we perform these executions in the manner we do.

She's a conservative Christian, right? Just asking because I've never been sure about it.

From Wiki
Quote
Bruenig has been described as being on "the Catholic Left"[15] by Rod Dreher in The American Conservative. In a profile published by Washington Monthly, she is described as "the most prominently placed of a small but increasingly visible group of young writers unabashedly advocating for democratic socialism."[16]

Trump showed his ass on the death penalty 30 years ago, frankly I'm surprised the executions weren't a bigger priority of the justice department much earlier in his administration.
