I don't know if we've already had this thread (if so I'll mod this).
In this thread we put pictures of the best & worst flags (country, state, city, etc).

When did Wichita steal New Mexico's flag?
I never even knew they had one then one summer I visited and boom that flag is everywhere
-
Obviously South Carolina is great
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201014/777294bacf8b17f028d794c45a9e7e0d.jpg)
And interesting!
While the flag invariably includes a white palmetto and crescent design on a blue background, state law does not provide "specifications for the shape, size, design or placement" of the symbols, or the exact color of the background.[7][8] As a result, flags from different manufacturers may have different appearances. A committee of the South Carolina Senate held a hearing on the issue in January 2018, but did not immediately advance a bill to standardize the design.

feel like montana just used the same person that kansas did. eerily similar

Worst state flag... Maryland gets my vote. Part union, part confederacy per Wikipedia.

1937, NM made theirs in 1925. The flag has been there forever, the difference is now it's fashionable to display it, to try and make Wichita more cool

They've had that logo and flag for a very long time, I don't think it looks like New Mexico's at all. They both have a Native American sun symbol, that's it.

Wichita’s flag is very cool imo.

Funny flag story involving your’s truly. When I was in second grade we had this parade of nations thing one year where a bunch of grade school kids got to draw/color up a big flag of whatever country. Prob 60 kids in total. It was part of one of the many local parades downtown. I think we were all second graders. Well, nicname got Libya.
That’s cool. It’s pretty neat flag you might be thinking. Take a look...
Wrong! From 1977-2011 the flag of Libya was rough ridin' green. That’s it. Just a big green rectangle.
So there were all the other kids with their cool flags and there was Nicname with his green blob parading his ass down main street. I was not amused.

Maybe. I lived at one of those places and been to the other roughly a dozen times so I don't see them as similar at all, no different than two flags with one star on them.

also today I learned that Kansas used to have a "state banner" meant to be hung vertically instead of horizontally to not compete with the US flag but it got rejected for display in Washington, DC so they made a flag.

It's quite confusing to me. What Candian word is that below the "star"? Also, WTH do the guys have on them? Are they some marine tools?
-
Obviously, one is an anchor. The other I believe is a scythe. No matter, I can picture this on a bottle of German beer.
-
Why is there a handle on the anchor? WTF does a drinking dude need a scythe? Is Maine loaded with drunk Germans?
-

1.) To affix the rope to
2.) To harvest the hops
In actuality, I presume, most likely correctly, that the two implements are intended to convey two aspects of Maine: (1) maritime activities; and (2) agricultural activities (e.g., Mowing by famous Mainer Robert Frost).
There was never a sound beside the wood but one,
And that was my long scythe whispering to the ground.
What was it it whispered? I knew not well myself;
Perhaps it was something about the heat of the sun,
Something, perhaps, about the lack of sound—
And that was why it whispered and did not speak.
It was no dream of the gift of idle hours,
Or easy gold at the hand of fay or elf:
Anything more than the truth would have seemed too weak
To the earnest love that laid the swale in rows,
Not without feeble-pointed spikes of flowers
(Pale orchises), and scared a bright green snake.
The fact is the sweetest dream that labor knows.
My long scythe whispered and left the hay to make.
Btw, I think Albert Camus lifted "the heat of the sun" line later and included it in The Stranger (L'Étranger).
-
Great response Spracne. Also, since you didn't address the state motto, I googled it. dirigo is Latin for "I direct" or "I lead". Maine is known as the Pine Tree state. I do think the two guys are lost Canadiens looking for a bar to get drunk and party.
-
i wonder if the guy who got the gig of designing like all the state flags back in the 1800s was a relative of the guy who did all the college mascots wearing sailor hats
-

The stock on an anchor is a crossbar that prevents the anchor from lying flat on the seabed, allowing the flukes to dig in and provide maximum holding power. The stock can be removed from the head of the anchor so it can be stowed flat on a ship's anchor bed. Before releasing the anchor, the stock must be folded out again, or "stocked", to ensure that one of the flukes digs into the ground.

They're voting on a new one, well an old new one. A lot of people have been using the one below, for a few years now, it's the first Maine flag. Many people thing the Dirigo (I Lead) flag looks too much like other state flags in the NE. The people will settle it in November.

to this

People didn't like the old flag because the seal is busy as hell and because of appropriation. It wasn't very old, they started using it in 1983. I have hardly seen the new flag at all, one I think. I didn't even see the new flag when I went to a Minnesota United match earlier this month.
Had some time (10 hours) recently between flights and it was decently represented in Minneapolis. I generally like it just kinda basic
Totally hope Maine goes the old new way
I really want Kansas to be a 1:2 proportioned flag that is outlined in the top right corner with the Missouri River. Have a 34 petal sunflower surrounded by two wheat heads and ad Astra per aspera and we're good

Swiss flag rules. Simple, striking design.

Minnesota - The Toilet of the North

overland park received the assignment, but its painfully obvious they were not in class the day it was assigned.

Why was the old motto in French? Agree it's busy, and there are three dates I don't understand the significance of.
They were settled by the French, in a lot of ways a French motto makes a lot more sense than a Latin one. The three dates might be the dumbest things on any flag in the United States, the reasoning for two of the dates is really stupid. One of those dates signifies when the seal was adopted.

Minnesota - The Toilet of the North
I know you're trolling
Well you know, bc L’Etoile kinda looks like the word toilet if you don’t know French and then du nord “of the north” you know never mind if I have to explain it then i guess it wasn’t very funny

Illinois, your turn

Sweet, one less awful flag, many more to go

That's the actual flag of Illinois? Woof.

Maine and Illinois not shown since they appear to be in process or will vote on a new one.
I don't care what people say about flags like Maryland's, yes it's over the top, but like it's so awful it's ok. There are a few others that could be better too but also not really as bad as these are
-
The Nevada flag is an actual national
entertainment embarrassment.
-
I like a lot of those.
If every state flag becomes some modern-trend, minimalist abstract thing (like Minnesota's new one), that would be kind of sad.
FWIW, Nevada's old flag was baller:

Holy crap  like do they use their flag for inside jokes or some crap?

I got a new US flag (not pictured) as the current one is fading badly. Betsy Ross and the Whiskey Rebellion flag complete my July 4th display. I've been debating getting a 34 star US flag, which was adopted when Kansas joined the union. It began flying July 4th, 1861.

You definitely should and I'm jealous of your 3 flag setup.
I'm a huge flag nerd and probably have 10 in my garage (one is a PR flag I got at fatty fest along with a clemente signed picture).
My standard flag rotation is COKEHEAD EMAW Willie flag from September until we start doing bad at football, then maybe mix in a chiefs flag around December, switch back to the EMAW flag in February or March then once the wildcats are eliminated its the old Red White and Blue flying until next September.

It’s the Newton, KS flag.

Added a fourth flag because when all of your teams are kicking ass, why not? In a week it will be old glory, Cats, Chiefs, Royals.
