An examination of just trying way to hard.
https://www.oregonlive.com/sports/2020/06/what-should-oregon-and-oregon-state-call-their-game-now-that-civil-war-has-been-discarded.html
Civil War has no specific connotation to the core issues that incite or instigate conflict. The term is merely a label for an intra country/nation/province etc conflict between parties. Of which in most cases said parties are vying for both political and physical control of the country or parts thereof.

Unless some black groups were asking for the change (I’m not aware of any) then please take this to the common ground thread.

Realtors are the jerks who insisted on the weird term in the first place.
Civil War is dumb because that’s literally what prompted emancipation. Maybe if they had called it the Antebellum Shootout or some nonsense.

I heard a reporter on the radio yesterday say that this has been a thing for a decade+, with some players from both schools taking exception to it. The reporter was asserting that if it's an issue today, it should've been remedied a decade ago.
Before I heard that, I thought canceling the name was dumb and an example of american self-importance. "Civil war" isn't just the one that took place in america in the 1860's. It's a type of war that's happened and happens everywhere, and a G'n'R song.

Added to the pending cancel list:
David Bowie: Nominated for the song “China Girl”
Charles Dickens: For failure to live up to the (moving target) Woke Nation norms of 2020 in the 1850’s.
Possible cross posting opportunities exist here.

Dr. Neal-Boylan, fired for having the audacity to say Black Lives Matter, and everyone's life matters.
The distant sound of goose stepping jackboots grows closer, the ProgNazi's are laden with their torches and arm bands, and on the march.

All research and academic endeavors must always delve to provide the pre-conceived answers the Woke Mob Demands.
How can we trust anything that comes out of research universities regarding sociological study and analysis?

I like this thread, I'd title it "crybaby bitches crying about insignificant things." Old white people have an amazing talent of finding the most minute things to have grievances about.

Oh eff off.
We're talking about a guy being forced out of his job for having the audacity to simply reference the research of another member of the same universities faculty.
In the one before that, the woman was fired for saying black lives matter and everyone's life matters . . . fired.
Again, eff off.

Trump was cancel culture before it was cool.
August 2012: Trump says Black journalist Touré, then a co-host of the MSNBC show "The Cycle," should be "forced to resign" for comments in which Touré uttered a variant of the N-word while arguing that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was using racially coded language to try to make President Barack Obama seem frightening. (Touré had apologized before Trump's demand.)
November 2012: Trump suggests the firing of then-MSNBC host Chris Matthews for saying, on the night of Obama's victory, that he was "so glad" Hurricane Sandy had occurred, because of its political impact. (Matthews had apologized before Trump's suggestion.)
December 2012: Trump calls for the firing of Vanity Fair magazine Editor Graydon Carter, with whom he had feuded for years, over what he declares the magazine's "worst ever issue."
December 2012: Trump says "Scots should boycott Glenfiddich garbage" because the whisky brand selected Michael Forbes, a farmer who refused to sell his land to make way for a Trump golf course, as "Top Scot" of the year.
March 2013: Trump says, "Everyone should cancel HBO until they fire low life dummy Bill Maher! Get going now and feel good about yourself!"
July 2013: Trump asks people to "boycott & cancel subscriptions" to Rolling Stone magazine because of a cover featuring Boston Marathon terrorist Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
October 2013: Trump urges "everybody possible" to "cancel their subscription" to New York Magazine over an insulting tweet about Trump's marriage from Dan Amira, who was online editor at the time.
March 2014: After Trump is left off a CNBC list of the most influential business leaders, he says, "Stupid poll should be canceled—no credibility."
May 2014: Trump calls for the firing of, or at least an apology from, the person at The Oklahoman newspaper who wrote a headline calling then-Oklahoma City Thunder NBA star Kevin Durant "Mr. Unreliable." (The newspaper had already apologized.)
June 2014: Trump says people should "Boycott Mexico" until a Marine reservist who was jailed for crossing the border with loaded guns is released from prison. (He was released later in the year.)
April 2015: Trump suggests that conservative writer Jonah Goldberg, then a senior editor of National Review magazine, should be forced to resign for writing that Trump had been "tweeting like a 14-year-old girl" in response to another conservative writer calling Trump a clown. Trump also suggests Fox News anchor Bret Baier should stop having Goldberg on his show.
June 2015: When Spanish-language television network Univision severed its business relationship with Trump after his campaign launch speech, in which he labeled Mexican immigrants as criminals and rapists, Trump tweets, "Anyone who wants strong borders and good trade deals for the US should boycott @Univision."
July 2015: Trump calls for a boycott of Macy's after Macy's discontinued its business dealings with him over those same comments about people from Mexico. Trump also tweets "Great" when someone tells him that people are canceling their Macy's credit cards.
August 2015: Trump calls for the firing of the late conservative writer and Fox News commentator Charles Krauthammer, a regular Trump critic.
September 2015: After National Review editor Rich Lowry argued on Fox News that rival Republican candidate Carly Fiorina had "cut off (Trump's) balls with the precision of a surgeon" in a primary debate, Trump says: "Incompetent @RichLowry lost it tonight on @FoxNews. He should not be allowed on TV and the FCC should fine him!" (Lowry responds, "I love how Mr. Anti-PC now wants the FCC to fine me. #pathetic.")
December 2015: Trump calls for the firing of then-CBS News journalist Sopan Deb and NBC/MSNBC journalist Katy Tur over reporting he disputed about how he handled protesters during a rally speech.
February 2016: Trump says people should "boycott all Apple products" until the company stops fighting a government request to break into the cell phone of a deceased California terrorist.
February 2016: Trump says Fox News should fire Republican strategist and commentator Karl Rove for being insufficiently positive about his victory in the Nevada caucuses.
February 2016: Trump calls on the Wall Street Journal to fire its editorial board, which had criticized him, and its pollster, which showed results he didn't like.
March 2016: Trump proposes a boycott of Megyn Kelly's Fox News show, complaining that it is too negative toward him.
September 2016: After the Dallas Morning News and Arizona Republic newspapers endorse Hillary Clinton for president and USA Today declares Trump unfit for the office, Trump says, "The people are really smart in cancelling subscriptions to the Dallas & Arizona papers & now USA Today will lose readers! The people get it!"
September 2017: Trump tweets that NFL players and other athletes who don't stand for the National Anthem should be told, "YOU'RE FIRED." He says in another tweet, "Fire or suspend!" And at a rally, he says, "Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners when somebody disrespects our flag to say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he's fired, he's fired.' "
October 2017: Suggesting he could use the power of the state against media entities he dislikes, Trump muses about challenging the broadcast licenses of NBC and other networks over their news coverage. (He again broached the subject of reviewing NBC's license in September 2018.)
November 2017: Trump calls for a boycott of CNN.
August 2018: Trump tweets, "Many @harleydavidson owners plan to boycott the company if manufacturing moves overseas. Great! Most other companies are coming in our direction, including Harley competitors."
June 2019: Trump suggests people stop "using or subscribing" to AT&T to pressure the company to make changes at CNN, which it owns.
September 2019: Trump suggests that actress Debra Messing should be fired for calling on a news outlet to publish the names of people attending a Trump fundraiser and for a tweet promoting a church sign that said "a black vote for Trump is mental illness." (Messing had apologized for the tweet about the church sign.)
January 2020: Trump says The New York Times should fire columnist Paul Krugman, a winner of the Nobel Prize in economics, for having incorrectly predicted a global recession after Trump's victory in 2016.
May 2020: The day after Twitter appended a fact check link to dishonest Trump claims about mail-in voting, Trump threatens to shut down social media companies: "Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen."
May 2020: Trump seeks the firing of Chuck Todd, host of NBC's "Meet the Press," for the show playing a misleadingly shortened clip of comments by Attorney General William Barr. (Todd apologized, saying it was an inadvertent mistake.) Again broaching the power of the state, Trump tags the accounts of the Federal Communications Commission, which regulates television, and its chairman, Ajit Pai.

When people are openly cheering for death and destruction so their favorite political candidate will win an election, they need to be called out, SlowDug. Some of the other stuff is sort of legit, and most of it is a combination of dumb/funny.
Big props to whatever entity put that list together.

Goodyear, along with Firestone are just the coolest, most American sounding brands.

I would've lol'd if he advocated to also have people buy Bridgestone or Continental instead.
I would suspect he'd think Michelin is too foreign sounding to do that one though.

I wonder how many Goodyear employees will quit their high paying jobs over this to own the libs. Because that's how stupid some MAGAs are.

It’s extremely telling when the resident useful idiots all pile on to support freedom of expression for one political movement over another. BLM is purely a political movement that at it’s core truly only cares about political power and political power alone.
But if you want to rock a BLM shirt, go right ahead. You’ll feel better in your state of virtue signaling and that’s good for your otherwise very low self esteem.

Kohl's also gives you a 25% off coupon for things in Kohl's for each Amazon item you return there, however you can't use the coupon on big brands like Nike, Adidas, UA, Kitchenaid, etc.

Enjoyed and agree with much of the sentiment in this NYT column on “Luxury beliefs.”

“Because, like with diamond rings or designer clothes of old, upper-class people don a luxury belief to separate themselves from the lower class. These beliefs, in turn, produce real, tangible consequences for disadvantaged people, further widening the divide.”

I really don’t have much issue with the statement, but that’s probably because I’m viewing “form of ableism” to be a broad sentiment rather than an inflammatory accusation.
I do think people who dislike children could benefit from giving some thought as to why that is, and whether it’s part of a broader disdain for people who make their lives less convenient through no fault of their own.
-
thinking about things makes me mad!!!

I'd agree that people who dislike children really should dislike parents instead.

Yeah, kinda. Sometimes kids can be real assholes tho, no matter what the parents do.
-
Yeah, kinda. Sometimes kids can be real assholes tho, no matter what the parents do.
I’d caution that a lot of these “hopeless” kids likely have some kind of neurodivergence (and an undiagnosed one in many cases).
There’s some really great work by a guy named Dr. Ross Greene who starts with the central hypothesis that “kids do well if they can.” It’s helped us quite a bit with our own autistic kid, who we used to think was just an bad person.

Worth noting I didn't use the phrase hopeless. Not all bad person kids are hopeless cases, they just need to learn and understand how to behave and treat other people. Yes, some kids need additional help, medically and/or from professionals, not all tho.

Real being real, I don't see much difference from this woman being offended by Drew playing in the rain than those who don't have the ability to simply ignore someone seemingly crazy and extreme. Libs of TikTok, whomever posted this tweet that stole it from them, and wacky are all trying to pull some greater meaning of this woman going off the deep end. Just like she tried to pull some greater meaning from some woman playing in the rain.
BTW, she must have had some level of awareness of her crazy, she apparently deleted her entire TikTok account less than 24 hours after posting that video. People who want you to think many black people think like that continue to spread it all over the internet. I wonder why?

1. Black men start doing a #frolicking challenge posting vids of themselves dancing in the rain, which later became a trend, primarily among black male social media posters
2. Drew Barrymore posts a similar video on social media.
3. The other woman (name, handle?), posts a tiktok pointing out black men started the trend, claiming that the white Barrymore's post opened the floodgates for black men to be disrespected
4. My guess is this disrespect would be the trend gaining universal popularity and being done by folks of all races, creeds, genders, etc. aka respecting the black social media posters would be for non-black males, especially non-blacks from jumping on the trend.
5. the woman in question, assumes authority and attempts to set the parameters of what "others" should or should-not do in regard to the trend. aka let the black men have this.
6. libsoftiktok shines a bright light on the whole thing, attempting to make the woman look stupid. it works.
7. the woman doubles down
8. she is widely mocked and ratioed again
9. she deletes her account

Meanwhile, I knew absolutely nothing about any of this. I'm not sure if I should be proud of ashamed of that fact. Thanks for educating me. (How did you know all this?)
I just looked it up, watched the posts, read a couple of articles, and posted it. Obviously made a few of
my own deductions, which I believe are reasonable.

you and i both know it's possible to be offended by drew barrymore posting herself enjoying the rain
I'm guessing the same mindset that would lead one to be offended would be the same mindset that would lead one to post your offense.
Is it ok to think hers was a stupid take without even considering her level of melanin?
Help me understand what you're asking? I already said she's crazy. Should you be asking the people who keep reposting about her melanin and not me?
Maybe you can help me understand, because I was confused by "People who want you to think many black people think like that." That thought never occurred to me. Granted, I only just now encountered this video and didn't read any replies. Is there something I'm missing regarding the race angle?
It's a bit of a stretch but both libsoftiktok and this account posted something to the effect of "I guess frolicking in the rain is racist now" instead of "this lady is wild", implying that there are a lot of (black) people who share that view.
Also TikTok does have a bit of an issue with white people capitalizing off of trends black people created but I'm pretty sure most people would think Drew dancing in the rain is a huge stretch even if it is kind of cringe and annoying.

Thanks for the background. I will gladly sit this battle out. Social media is dumb (except gE).

Also I've never looked at libsoftiktok beyond what wacky has started but they really suck and are extremely misleading about crap. Like here they have convinced their mob that schools are hiding information about a kids' gender from the kids' parents. When nothing in their supporting images implies this at all, or even implies their intentionally vague assertion.

What I'm saying is that most of the people continuing to share that video on social media are doing so with the intent of making a point of other people, other than the woman who probably needs some time off the computer and more time bonding with people in the flesh.

This is probably the main reason I think social media is kind of bad for us, in general.
Fringe people are made representative of broader groups (or at least mascots), which makes everyone think that the world is crazier than it really is.

It's a tsunami of derp from you these days (on top of the absolutely prolific levels of insufferable mansplaining).
Saying a White House spokesperson can't interpret her mumbling old ass boss is not an insult.
Calling Susan "A YouTube Video Killed our Ambassador" Rice a liar is really kind of insult to liars.
Weird how you want all the power for "your people" (again, your words, not mine) and yet you lose your crap when they are rightfully criticized.

I agree that it's a productive form of protest. It does bring attention to their cause and there's no real harm caused to anyone or anything. However, I did love it when Bobby Wagner blew that dude up who stormed the field the other week on Thursday Night Football.

True, much like Kaepernick's national anthem protests, this protest has gotten the attention it wanted. Which is the whole purpose.
The difference is, Kaepernick just hurt some folks' feelings. This stunt is potentially damaging to priceless works of art.

I'm sure they'll survive. Reading the article, the glue-hands dorks were aghast after VW said they supported their right to protest, but then didn't provide them with a way to obtain food (except for the hunger strikers withing the crew) or a pot to piss n crap in.

I read the article yesterday and surprise but that's not what she said and that might be a world record for just how out of context a quote can be.
The article talked about NIL and part of that article mentioned Dunne another part of the article talked about how sex appeal might be a driver for NIL. VanDerveer was asked about this, not Dunne and she, along with a couple of college women's athletes in the article said that women having to sell sex to get attention is a step back, she didn't say diddly crap about Dunne. The article didn't even hint that Dunne was selling sex.

It was an "article" that copied the Page Six gossip piece word for word and then added a few lines of snark at the end. There is no "UPDATE" there. And it was published yesterday, right after the Page Six story everyone is running with. For some reason, they're retweeting it tonight. Why? Probably because they know their derpy followers will just read the headline and then flame away in the comments (that means engagement!). Let not your heart be troubled. The show will go on. I'll definitely be watching it later, but not live.
I know, I know. #Explainer. The explanation isn't really directed at you as much as others who would prefer a brief digest.

MIR might yell at me for this, but I still enjoy Chappelle most of the time, although I thought the trans jokes were a bit lazy. Punching down at a vulnerable population is rarely a good formula for comedy, though it is easy. Nevertheless, there exists a receptive audience for that content, as we can see. To the extent I can even presume to know Chappelle's actual, private, non-comedian thoughts on trans people/rights (and I'm not sure I can presume or that his beliefs are static), I disagree with his stance, and I would consider that a character flaw of his. But he's a comedian. It's comedy, not lawmaking. I'm more concerned about the latter. I think those who would feel emboldened by Chappelle sticking it to the "woke" crowd on this issue already felt antipathy towards trans folks to begin with.

In the minimal recesses of your shallow little soul you know this kind of thing can, will and has happened. Thus, you feel compelled to over explain.

I have and will always separate art from the artist. The tricky thing with Dave is that he's compromising his art, a bit, by playing the victim.
Dave Chappelle is the greatest comedian of my lifetime, and I go back to Richard Pryor, when he isn't crying about how mean the trans people are to little ol dave. He's teetering towards "old Kanye" territory but he still has his fastball, just doesn't throw it as much as he should. I'm looking forward to SNL, should be fun.

Would be nice if they linked the article they're talking about.
Although it's not news anyway. As long as I've been alive I've heard people call the lottery a "poor tax."
-
The tldr is that poor people disproportionately play the lottery but the funds generally go to higher education and whatnot so it can be argued that the lottery is wealth redistribution from lower class to upper class

It’s disingenuous to point it out as a racial problem rather than a class problem imo. It’s something that bugs me a lot about the move away from class politics by the left. The things that are good for poor people are good for them across the board.
It’s a big part of the reason we got Trump in the first place.
-
Just get rid of the lottery then, imo. No objection from me on this element of "wokeness."

We can hold two related thoughts in our minds at the same time. There are wealth disparities among racial groups in this country, so anything that affects the lower class disproportionately affects certain racial groups. Unless you're suggesting we should work to get rid of those wealth disparities, your comment that we should only talk about class and not race seems like you're trying to ignore the latter.

lol, yet those same people have no problem equating crime rates to race. It's okay to acknowledge poverty and crime, in this country, have ties to race created by policies like redlining.

That says nothing about state lotteries targeting the poor and minorities. All it says is that there are more retailers in low income and minority neighborhoods. Why would there not be more retailers in those neighborhoods if there are more players there? It even says they don't know if the lottery does it knowingly or unknowingly.

I think it's also likely a function of poorer people disproportionately living relatively close to corner stores/bodegas/gas stations that sell lotto tickets (and beer and ciggies and corner store food). But regardless, yeah I think it's pretty obvious poor people disproportionately buy lotto tickets.
I doubt that "proximity to lotto players" is driving much of the location decisions of retailers that happen to distribute lotto tickets.

"The lottery" are run by states, and for as much as I think systems are still very racially biased, the lottery isn't one of them. They will but lottery machines wherever a retailer will have them. They'll put lottery machines in every store in Rodeo Drive if they could. If there are more lottery results in minority communities, that's probably because there's more gas stations and smoke shops in these places, than there are in suburbia.

MIR is spot on here. Also, there will be lotteries in poor areas regardless of the state running them or not. It’s a big part of them existing in the first place. The state couldn’t allow the bookies to “run numbers” w/out getting their cut. It’s the same with state-run casinos aka lottery for rich people.

SNL was unreal. Good choice to let him have an extended monologue. The sketch that he "sat out" might have been the best one. If I have one minor gripe about Chappelle on SNL is that there is a tendency to lean on Chappelle's Show a bit much. The one Chappelle's Show sketch was very good though.

I like it when they're open about being bigots. Number one on their list is intersectionality. So basically if the movie has a bunch of minorities, bitches, and gays then it should be dismissed as wokeism.

https://time.com/6250153/woke-convenient-republican-dog-whistle/ (https://time.com/6250153/woke-convenient-republican-dog-whistle/)
This covert form of race-baiting has become a central plank in shaping American partisan politics. Moving away from the language of Strom Thurmand and George Wallace, who overtly rallied their supporters against threats to the racial hierarchy, Republican candidates in the post-Civil Rights era stoke fear and anger over this threat via coded language.
Whether it’s a term like “woke,” or more traditional labels like “welfare queen,” “buck,” “thug,” “terror,” “illegals,” “socialists,” or “unAmerican,” the efficacy of a racial dog whistle is not in the fact that nobody knows whom you’re clearly talking about, it’s the plausible deniability that allows you to respond: “Who’s talking about Black people? I’m just talking about leftists. You’re the one making it about race.”
-
dang, "buck" seems like a completely racial one
-
Now I’m curious who on this board had previously associated the term “woke” with race? That seems like a crappy dog whistle IYAM.

The way they're using buck here must be different than the only way I've seen buck used. I've only seen militant black men use that word, specifically bed buck, to describe another black man who bones white women.
-
dang, "buck" seems like a completely racial one
I haven't heard that term since I was a kid. It meant to be a term for a person who didn't listen to elders and did whatever he felt like doing. Usually, the adj. young was associated with a buck as in "young buck". Did not remember it being code for black men, though.

Ok well there is clearly an example of the dog whistle version of “woke.” My word.
Woke (/?wo?k/ WOHK) is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination".[1][2] Beginning in the 2010s, it came to encompass a broader awareness of social inequalities such as sexism, and has also been used as shorthand for American Left ideas involving identity politics and social justice, such as the notion of white privilege and slavery reparations for African Americans.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke#:~:text=Woke%20(%2F%CB%88wo%CA%8Ak,to%20racial%20prejudice%20and%20discrimination%22.
It's a term rooted in pointing out racial discrimination and right wing people started applying it to everything else they disagree with.

Also, the algorithm is showing me reels of vets freeing pus from cow hooves next to grillmasters slicing into ribeye steaks -- yes I have heavily indulged in both sorts of videos but it is kind of gross to see them pop up side-by-side.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has labeled 3,400 NSF grants as "woke DEI" research that may be advancing "neo-Marxist class warfare propaganda." and "left-wing ideological crusades masked as 'academic research.'"
this list includes
-self driving cars
-solar eclipses
-improve defense and aerospace manufacturing capabilities
-biodiversity of suboscine passerines
-study of the Hebrew language

So these government grant awards only had 4 and 5 word explanations and summaries?
We're awarding millions on 4 and 5 word explanations?
Maybe that explains all the check writing with no cost center, explanations or justifications
Really makes you think

No. I really can't imagine the level of stupidity it would take to even entertain that that might be reality.

So let me get this straight.
We're supposed to be Big Mad at Ted Cruz . . . using snipped explanations as to what the grants were for and in the absence of the full list?

Dax is right. Please dax list the left wing ideological crusades relevant to these studies.
-
Where's the list?
Or are we just in #blueanon rage "Trust me bro" world . . . again?
-
Note to viewers . . .
As we're finding out, many of the #blueanon "fact checkers" and "experts" were part of either the USAid Grift . . . or the the Government buys hundreds if not thousands of their most expensive subscriptions grift.
-
Well dax is confused so I guess we'll just have to take Ted's word.

So you cannot provide the list that Cruz was allegedly using that Lick referenced in his post?
Very on brand
-
I'm 100% on your side dax, why would Ted lie? I see absolutely no reason not to believe Ted.
-
Just because dax cannot provide evidence of a neo-marxist class warfare propaganda in these studies DOES NOT mean Ted is lying.

Love for you to provide examples because most of that was taken out of context and misrepresented by Musk
