Now that we're probably all recovered, this thread is to help KK and I know what worked and what didn't and start having an idea of what to plan for 2018.
While it seems we make more money the less people are there (guilt from non-attendees, easier for us to work the crowd?), we still want FattyFest to be well-attended and something that gets prioritized on people's calendars well in advance.
Post your critiques and/or compliments here.
My own:
- I liked having it now rather than middle of summer, both to escape the heat and it felt like there was more energy (?) having it when school's in session.
- I'm not sure if adding the watch party was helpful. It definitely made it harder to plan given the unknown game time until 12 days out, and most everyone was pak'd by evening and dropping out.
- Would contemplate doing it in the spring, whether in conjunction with a known-time-in-advance lol #oscar game, or even in April after that's all done, but while school's still going.
- If not with a watch party attached, is there something that would be good to replace it with a la concerts we've done in the past, or is it best to just plan on 4-5 hours of daytime hard pak'n as far as the official event goes?
- I thought having lunch was good, but going back to the unknown timing, it made it hard to plan. Perhaps better to get gangs of pizza shuttle and have it available all day?
- Definitely want to get a more technologically advanced auction system, especially if we're going to have bidding from non-attendees. There should still be some attendee-exclusive items.
- Not that it should matter given that it's all for the Fatty Fund, but might look at discounting tickets purchased a certain amount of time in advance, so that we could better lock in attendance numbers early.
So post any thoughts, with them geared towards what you'd like to see that would make it most likely that we'd have people putting this on their calendars as a thing they're absolutely not missing, as opposed to something they'll go to if it works out at that time. T-Y.
-
Definitely a way to keep track of auction bidding better. Would also allow for people to donate items that could be bid on. I've been to quite a few events that do it via text service even but not sure if there is a cost to those (prob so)... https://www.32auctions.com has a free option for limited # of items
I'd prefer it around a home game weekend because I'd be more likely to be available but understand that's probably not conducive for keeping people at the event for hours. Spring could work around spring game? Right before school ends?
bar crawl with entry fee?
-
i just want to know who is wearing the N'GENE hat right now
-
Having it in the fall during an away game was perfect. MHK in the fall is bitb.
Also regarding your fewer people = more money theory, I mean by my count exactly $100 was raised per one person who didn't show up, so this checks out
-

I bought the asian airport virus face guard. It was like a 4-pack!

Regular season home game is a no-go, unless it was a known early-season crap 6pm game, and it was thought people would do FattyFest instead of tailgating. Spring game, maybe, but that's always at like 1 right? Even if we started FattyFest at 5, people would already be wasted and dip.

This could be good for the evening part if we could get enough sponsor bars to do something special for crawl'rs. We already expect people to stick around and PAK across aggieville, but most people are pretty mumped up by 7.

If we do that again, gotta figure out how to get people to make it a priority, especially if they're already going to Manhattan multiple times in the fall for home games.

Also, looking at how the day went, how mumped would we have been if the football game had been at 11 and everyone was 4-hour superpak'd and mad before we even started the main events?

I thought football away game in bitb Oct was perfect too but understand the scheduling difficulty
Personally I enjoyed chilling with internet buds in the evening more than a concert or something like past years. I wouldn't try to cram more activities, the trivia with auction is good.
Had a really great time this year tho and thank the organizers for their contributions.

I would be willing to build, donate, and host the auction system for next year. I was going to suggest a text system with a website component that updates in real time. Twilio has some very reasonable rates and I’ve wanted to build something with that in it. I had talked with KK about building an iOS and Android app for last years FF but it didn’t work out.
-
I would trivia right on through an 11 am cats game no prob, but I understand most are not as good at trivia as I am

How about you have it in Kansas City?

oh man
as far as the event, it was great again. well done by kk and trim. I've been to three and all were a little bit different but the end game was the same.
i didn't eat there but i heard the food was good.
i would say auction stuff with trivia and football going on people probably forgot. i think a few people really didn't leave their seats during trivia or if they did just stayed downstairs. not sure how to remedy that other than maybe starting it after the break during trivia. i know i bid on a few things and if i hadn't i probably wouldn't have went upstairs.
service kinda sucked but what are you going to do.....
the pub crawl isn't a bad idea, i think you could tie it in with the auction if you sort and finish at maes but then becomes a time issue..
all in all keep doing whats working and i would say thats pretty much all of it. AND BRING BACK CARNEY ENCORE!!!

I agree with this.

Early home game that most likely is 6pm would easily be an easy tailgate skipper.

There's an obvious answer to this, that no one cares about answering too.

Don’t involve kickball Wacky

Totally sober, but would love to help out.

There's a loyal fanbase on here that loves the charm of gE. As we progress and PI'ing has been this boards charm, no one wants to go to an event where a mid 40 something abuses the newcomers and the usual cast. Non-butthurt post that's literally the truth.

I thought there was something towards another member here, but this is actually a really good point.
I’m an outsider who went to my first FF as a complete unknown and had a great time. I was living with ShellShock at the time and didn’t know a single person going to FF. I had a great time and it compelled me to post more because I could be me and I was accepted.
I have stayed because contrary to semi-popular opinion I have a pretty thick skin. Such is posting on any message board. My point is regardless of your post count or “view” on gE, IRL we are all mostly(CDub, etc) KSU fans at heart and are good people. I wouldn’t send money or spend the amount of time I do on this blog if I didn’t believe that. We are a family and I really believe that.

definitely preferred the fall environment
improved remote auction setup would prolly help the weirdos with mumped priorities
catered food was nice touch but prolly not critical and undoubtedly a pain in the ass to plan head count for
just an awesome time, as always

We could expand this and have a live in-person tech support ticket submission desk.

@kslim Half the mods didn't show this year, brother. Imagine the ppl who use to love fattys video with U2. 25-50 ppl? We have been kicking the oppositions ass for years. I can guarantee you the normal poster wasn't going out of their way to be there.

well the reason you stated was being PI'd in person, and i can tell you that it doesn't happen. and hell half the mods don't even post anymore (or rarely) but they still participate....attend and find out i guess

besides that this is about donating for the fatty family, if you can't get past a drunk incident from 5 years ago thats probably on you

I've by far interacted with them more than you. Problem solved: PC-SteveDave, Party coordinator- Clams, HR Auntie Maes Host- RD, FF coordinator- KK, and Auction accountant- Chings. Take my rough ridin' $!

ooh auction idea:
highest bidder will be granted a poster to ignore of their choice for a set time limit (say a year or 6 months i.e. during a sport season if they choose)

Kslim- I'm sure your donations are sending this board over the top!

i don't know or care about any of what you just posted...did you have a suggestion or something. I'm confused. again you said people don't go because of being PI'd and thats simply not true. so I'm not sure what your point is here
-
Wacky, everyone's always been cool at FattyFest. I've never seen anyone act like a dick. It was unfortunate that I couldn't make it this year.
I have to think having students around Aggieville really ups the atmosphere, but I like the idea of FattyFest being to be a reason to "get away" to Manhattan during the summer. No need for catering imo, and prob a bit of a hassle, but def. an avenue to raise more money.
Pub crawls = meh.

what? dude i don't know what your deal is but i didn't say anything about what i have donated. go have another one and crash or something, its obvious you are just bitching to bitch

This is a good point. What do you think about a mid-to-late April slot to try to do it when Manhattan's still live but also when people wouldn't have been there for a while?

If the consensus continues to be that we don't need a sports game as part of this, and that officially going hard for 5 hours followed by keep-pak'n-if-you-want is enough of an event, this could be a really good option. Need more input on April (people probably wouldn't have been to Manhattan for a while) vs. October-ish (probably more lively town but maybe tough for people already committed to lots of home game travel).

75% is a pretty high number bub so ill take that with a grain of salt, still have no idea what that has to do with the people that show up. it sounds like you are boycotting it if anything, which is fine you're an adult. i just don't see how telling a potential person not to go because of who is there as helping

fine with either spring or fall, don't think sports tie-in necessary (not sure how much focused 'game watching' occurred, but i also got a ride home from some random chicks near the dorms on the walk home because i was an embarrassing mess and they felt sorry for me so like 1/10th vote)

If it was held at spring game weekend I'm quite sure a large portion wouldn't GAF about going to the actual spring game.
-
I also think it wouldn't hurt if you did it in KC or Wichita, etc. Mix it up.
-

Agreed, but the spring game’s existence in town would needlessly add an element of difficulty in scheduling. If spring game was at 6-ish instead of 1-ish, having FattyFest that day could be great.
The thing we’d have to consider with a separate April date is if people would actually be traveling to the spring game and then be hesitant to travel to MHK on another weekend so close in time.
-
If spring, do it while el tourny is going on but at a date when people for sure wouldn't be traveling for the cats so like second weekend?
-
I don't think many here make a special trip to the spring game and its likely if FF was scheduled, they would choose that over a spring game trip.
Also, an April Saturday would allow for a Royals watch party that night (for those that care to partake) and those games are almost always at 6:00 pm. To many around here, that would be a good time as well.
-
I also think it wouldn't hurt if you did it in KC or Wichita, etc. Mix it up.
No thanks

I'm actually getting pretty excited about the possibility of a fine FF afternoon followed by watching the Roys with a bunch of gE buds. (The Royals thread is the most popular thread on this blog by over 40K replies!).

Ah, this could be really good. A reason to stick at Mae's and keep pak'n together, but not something that people feel they need to pay undivided attention to and stay below a 5 for. And when the Royals are down by 2 runs in the 4th inning and everyone declares the season over, we can completely flip over to full-blown getting pak'd wherever.

2019
Why settle for 2019 when 2018 is available? Unless that'll be too much work for us so soon and we need to have a summer or fall 2018 one to bridge the gap, or let the hype build for a full year and a half.

spring weather can make planning events a nightmare though
-
Takeaways so far:
Summer = meh, fun as a way of getting back to MHK after not having been for a while but that could also be accomplished with spring 'fest
Fall = was good, but possibly too much going on already in falls to justify a trip to MHK on a road football weekend
KSU sports tie-in = also meh, was fun this year but not a needle-mover on attendance and maybe not worth the scheduling headaches
Food = good, but again not a needle-mover and would be fine with nothing or something easier if the scheduling is still screwy and difficult

Will we need to make sure the royals are playing in like minnesota in order for people to not justify skipping FF because the royals are at home and/or it's opening weekend or whatever?

I don't think so, but Roys are at home March 31, April 14 and 28. Road games April 7 and 21. I think most would choose FF over a Roys home game unless they got free great seats or something. I would (choose FF) and I like the Roys a lot.

#1. Anyone suggesting a location other than MHK is an idiot.
#2. I think having food there keeps people at the event and engaged, instead of leaving to get food. (Doesn't have to be too complicated though.)
#3. If contemplating scheduling for Spring 2018, consider whether that is too soon after the last event...Will people donate as much if they just donated? :dunno:
#4. Do you want to try to get more non-gE people attending? If so, consider advertising options.
#5. Try not to change the date once it is set so that people don't have to reschedule stuff. :dunno:

This is good.
#2 will be easy to optimize if we have a known timeline and do better at getting tickets/headcount done in advance.
#3 is a consideration, but I guess I don't care if people don't donate quite as much at an April 2018 'fest because it'll be money we'd see in 6 months from now instead of a year from now.
#4 was combination of us still not having crap taken care of far enough in advance and it being a little harder to market when we didn't have a firm itinerary.
#5 is hopefully being solved in part with this thread!
-
Oh, also I don't know how much advanced sales you got (as % of total) but I liked having that option to pay online rather than having to have so much cash.

Yes, and we need to encourage that more, potentially by making the cash/day-of price higher than the online/advance price.

I don't know how difficult it is to get in with the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation but they do a match day every year on Earth day. Every dollar gets a $1 match. If you are planning on doing it with the spring game, it is likely that will coincide with Match day as they probably won't do it on a Sunday. If everyone pays for their auction items online through their site on their match day, it will double the amount of money raised.

If everyone pays for their auction items online through their site on their match day, it will double the amount of money raised.
Holy crap. Even if FattyFest's not on the exact day, I'm sure we could do something to time things out to where actual payment for things is on the right day. After we get the date figured out, don't let us forget about trying to hook this up.

I will look in to this, but I don't think The greater manhattan foundation allows 1:1 matches for individual charities, but I will follow up.

They do on match day. I've volunteered with them in the past. I'm not sure what goes into partnering with them (you may have to use them to money manage) but if I donate $100 to boys and girls club, some manhattan stud matches dollar for dollar.

this sounds like a no-brainer to me. it's now $200 per person who does not show up (!)

My only opinion is that pretty much everyone but winters and greg are too old for pub crawls.

Pub crawl's out for any number of reasons. You more than anyone need to be giving feedback about scheduling.

why not get k-state athletes involved and host some sort of tournament?
it could be flag football at old stadium, a 3-on-3 hoops tourney at the rec, wiffle ball, or tennis (fatty's favorite). if you hosted FF in April, most athletes are on campus but not in season, so surely they'd be willing to participate. they could also help with promotion and attendance.
once teams are set in whatever sport you decide on (let's say it's hoops), create a bracket, have someone set the odds, and allow non participants to place bets on who they think will win (any money won must be spent on auction items). you could film the event live, which engages people who are not there, and is yet another way to create publicity.
i have yet to attend an FF (sorry!), but i would watch this and follow with interest.
if sys was on a team, i would for sure show up just to destroy him in an athletic endeavor.

Hooping at a 5 sounds dangerous

The tennis team used to do a mixed doubles fundraiser. That would absolutely be a blast. We are pretty sure that for April the event would be non trivia focused, so this is a good suggestion. However, tennis would still be in season in April.
But I like the idea.

you can pry trivia out of my cold dead hands

If we do a non-trivia thing for an April '18 'fest, it'll only be because we don't think we'll be able to do the full 5-hour production all within Mae's so soon to the last one with our benefactors donating the amount of stuff we need to do it right. It would be to bridge the gap between this past one and the usual event in its new April-ish slot starting in '19.
What we're considering would still involve your team defending the belt in competition.

Very intriguing.
