if we fire oscar and hire him as some sort of up and comer with university connections so help me god :flush:
-
we owe it to steve to give him the keys to the house he helped build

right there with you. :Yuck:
-
I would rather have inexperienced Steve than oscar. I wouldn't be happy, but I would be happier than keeping oscar.
-
I don't want Steve.
-
Unfortunately for our fan base we will have to hire a Steve Henson and watch him flop before our fans realize an alumnus is usually not the best answer to a coaching problem.
-

Cancer vs AIDS isn't something I like to spend time contemplating, if you know what I mean. :dunno:
-
I'd rather keep oscar
-
Positive: He used to thank the ref every time the ref handed him the ball before he shot free throws.
-
Negative: He wasn't able to coach his brother to be awesome like him.
-
I'd enjoy Currie hiring Steve Henson and the reaction of those not already mocking the thought in this thread.
-
What if Steve is the secret behind Lon's success?
-
which was the bigger blow? henson leaving or hield graduating? :users:
-
What if Steve is the secret behind Lon's success?
Like, OU hired the Dan Hawkins of Basketball?
-
For all I know, Henson could be a complete stud at basketball coaching.
-
For all I know, Henson could be a complete stud at basketball coaching.
I'm sure he took over a shitty squad, but he's 11–14, 6–6 at UTSA this year.
-
Have you guys not seen his head? It's huge. KSU can't handle that ego.
-
I don't want anything to do with a connection to Kruger. Kruger was run off in part because of allegations of hunching nubile college coeds. He trashed KSU and started the thought that you can't recruit here.
-

They were 5-27 (3-15) last year. I don't think a coach's first year at any program should ever be used to draw any sort of reasonable conclusion, though.

UTSA defensive improvement is really good. Offensively a lot to be desired but I think that is mostly on the roster because offense tends to be about Jimmy and Joes. The question with Henson is how well he would recruit i.e who in the hell is he going to hire as main recruiters.
I would also rank him number one on most likely to be coaching the KSU Wild Cats.
-
no thanks. Too Fat/weird looking. Sheesh why couldn't he have been hoiberg
-
Crap
-
if we fire oscar and hire him as some sort of up and comer with university connections so help me god :flush:
Agreed. With Henson, I wouldn't care . I don't want to spend another 5 years not caring. I mean, I can, but I'd prefer to care.
-
no thanks. Too Fat/weird looking. Sheesh why couldn't he have been hoiberg
He could be the next Hoiberg. I remember thinking ISU was stupid for hiring him. He will probably crash and burn, but I don't know he will like I knew oscar would.
-
no thanks. Too Fat/weird looking. Sheesh why couldn't he have been hoiberg
Hoiberg is much better looking, but he had much less of a career pass. NBA bounce around guy to NBA assistant to Iowa State HC.
Henson has NBA bounce around, NBA assistant, Kruger assistant (at various locales) on his resume.
I would rather wait to see Steve prove it a bit as a head coach, but if we are comparing to Hoiberg he had done nothing to think he would be good. ISU basically got lucky with him like we got lucky with Frank.

You're gonna weigh 80 pounds if you keep not caring for another 5 years.

Henson would be worse than retaining oscar. I'm not even kidding.

i think everyone can agree on that

I can't believe it, but I think I am in this camp as well.
Henson is just a lazy hire with no thought put behind it. Oh, he went to KSU??? Great!!! He'd be a fantastic head coach!!!
-
This discussion is making me like Henson more.
-
Maybe Steve will put together a really nice binder. :dunno:
-
Spradling. People liked him. His dad was.a.coach. He coaching at Anthony Prairie View.A&M.
-
This discussion is making me like Henson more.
Yeah, I'm pretty much all in at this point.
-
I bet Currie would love to hire Henson just like Mike Alden hired Kim Anderson on his way out the door at Mizzou - "here's your boy hayseeeds, enjoy!"
-
Come home, Steve!
-
This whole discussion truly adds extreme emphasis to missing out on Underwood twice.
It was the ultimate no lose situation for an AD.
Brad was clearly the number one assistant from a coaching/system perspective. He had previous collegiate head coaching experience (it was JUCO whatevs). The good will, the patience by the fanbase and big cigars would have been cash money for a smart AD.
Then to have the opportunity a second time, albeit more expensive, and passing again! That's fireable right there kids. It ain't gonna happen but lots of other AD's would be calling their agent/industry recruiter/contacts.
Stevie needs a 3 season track record, because he had zero previous head coaching experience.

I said it last year but not firing Weber and hiring Underwood is going to set our program back for a long time. Now we will most likely fire doofus and there are no good candidates out there to choose from. Pretty much sums up life as a K-state fan.
-

i think everyone can agree on that
disagree
it would be a garbage hire tho
(i could never bring myself to hate Steve the way i loathe Oscar)

I agree, unless Steve is full of excuses and play hard charts too.
-
I'm fairly confident Steve would have our Cats in the Big Dance next year and probably the year after as well.

even then he has a base of cultural capital and a level of self awareness/confidence oscar cant touch
-
i think people absolutely underrate how entertaining it is to lose with oscar. i don't want some kroger brand losing experience if we're gonna be garbage
-
Steve Henson is Private Selection brand all the way, though.
-

He has proven he can coach defense. There is enough data on that. At a low or mid major he is never going to prove he can be a high major roster builder. I think that is the hardest thing to do at a non blue blood in college basketball. There is only one way to find out.

He hasn't proven crap. You can't give him credit for improving the defense but give him a pass for making a bad offense worse.
-
Roll the dice, John.
-
Spradling. People liked him. His dad was.a.coach. He coaching at Anthony Prairie View.A&M.
I had to google this and now it makes more sense as to why I played co-ed indoor volleyball and went against him a few times this year.. Hes at Anthony middle school coaching.. Who knew? not me

yoga :D

I only pay attention to what I need to fellas :shy:

He doesn't coach there. He's a girls assistant at Manhattan High and runs his own aau program.

are you trying to convince me that will is our aau answer Ive been asking for?!

Compare Underwood's resume after Frank left to Henson's now.

Henson very well may be basketball Bob Stoops, I'm confused why some are convinced he's a bad coach.

For me it's because
1) Zero proven head coaching success
2) Does not have a reputation as an exceptional recruiter as far as I can tell (which I think should be the #1 factor for someone without head coaching success)

Agreed, and well put. Those are my concerns as well.
-
What's the maximum number of small town 5'10" Johnny Hustle 3-point specialists you could have on one team and not have it be a liability?
-
I'll add that those two items don't mean he's a bad coach, it just means there is nothing distinguishing him from the hundreds of D1 assistants and low major HC's with losing records other than the fact that he was a star player at KSU.
-

This is a very bad comparison.
Coordinators are rightly or wrongly (I don't know the data to compare) viewed as much more high profile/more responsibility than an assistant in college basketball.
Part of this is probably that there are 3x as many D1 hoops jobs so mid-major head coaches get much more opportunities to move up to power 5 jobs than assistants at power 5 jobs get 1st jump to a power 5 job.
So while people have criticized Currie in the past regarding his "head coaches only" rule it makes the most sense in basketball.

I want to say 3?
-
Henson might be better than oscar, but it's almost as lazy of a hire.
-
You know how Roy always made sure to have at least 1 Kansan on the squad, well it would be fun if Steve would do that with McPherson guys.
-
I bet Currie would love to hire Henson just like Mike Alden hired Kim Anderson on his way out the door at Mizzou - "here's your boy hayseeeds, enjoy!"
This could be a real risk, actually.
-
I would be devastated if we hired Steve Henson. I can't think of a more boring hire. Can you?

That's fair. NBA tho :excited:

Gottfried can at least recruit though. So we would at least have some talent to watch but would be the equivalent of watching a Travis Ford coached team.

Not at all surprising

AJ makes that program hum.

After _FAN posted that I figured out that me being a dick to Spradling is why AJ used to have me blocked on twitter.

I don't know why else we would have had me blocked and he didn't either, I'm certainly not going to ask if it's because I was a dick to Will and Shannon.

Spradling and his program do a really nice job FWIW.

I don't like Steve's chrome dome. There, i said it.
