Title: Why is K-State hoops cursed?
Post by: Bqqkie Pimp on February 12, 2017, 08:46:10 PM
Up until '88 we had a virtually identical, if not better, basketball history than lil bro save for one legitimate national title. Then, we lose to the squawks in the Elite 8, they win it all and go on to greatness over the next 30-ish years while we basically tank for the better part of the last quarter century.

Now, we are stuck with #oscar while no less than FOUR former head or assistant K-State coaches (Huggins/WVU, Altman/Oregon, Martin/USCe, & Jankovich/SMU) have top 25 teams headed to the tourney.  It would be five, but Kruger's team at OU all graduated last year.

Some sort of strange voodoo went on during that fateful night in March of 1988 and K-State hoops has never been the same.

Basketball and aggieville used to be all we had.   Then football happened.   Then we started playing basketball in a hole in the ground.  Then Ol' Roy and stupid luck hit Chickenpoop Hill.   We can have excellent basketball and football.  We just have to xemand it.  Let General Myers and snappy dresser Curdog know.

Roy Williams recruited like crazy for them and their assistants were top notch...

We had Altman, who was good, ..the perception back then was that KSU can't fall even an inch behind their program or you get the axe, Add in Dana never wanting to be a part of their country club old boys group...and he was shown the door.

Then Asbury promptly destroyed everything in 3 years,. (how could we forget J. Massey??? LOL!!! )...... then Tex Winter sold the admin on Jim Woolridge....there's 6 more years of completey futility... (see '02 Big XII Tourney loss to Colorado)........ Then Huggins wanted a paycheck again and called KState and said "hey I'm coaching for you guys"......and then he bolted to WVU because their school knew he'd leave for them.......... which brought Martin, the one successful guy we could have ever had hoped for......then... Currie boots Martin because two egos like that can't fit on one planet, and our donors are polly princesses that don't like cussing............... and here we are with oscar who rode Frank's coattails just like we thought he would.

30 years goes by fast.

It's pretty simple. In 1988 Our administration had to foresight to see that college football was going to become infinitely more important than basketball over the next 30 years.

We decided to put all of our energy and focus into building a powerhouse football program even if it meant roundball had to suffer.

Pretty smart move.

He also said Altman was good. Anyone winning .339 of their conference games is not good and him becoming a good coach after his time here should not change that. He had one decent season at K-State and otherwise wasn't good.

We are probably only a season or two away from K-State having coaches in roughly 33% of the top 25 once Henson and Underwood get their teams up to speed and Kruger returns to form as well.

That would be 8 of the 25 and we'll still have #oscar.

Actual press release

Things are starting to look up on the hardwood in Manhattan. After a disappointing 1999-2000 campaign that saw just two wins in Big 12 Conference action and a 9-19 overall record, Jim Wooldridge took over the reins of the Wildcats last season and began to mold the 'Cats into a formidable, tough-minded unit.

Despite playing with a depleted roster that possessed just nine healthy scholarship players throughout much of last season, the Wildcats clawed their way to an 11-18 record, good for 10th place in the league. Included in those 11 wins were a pair of victories over Top 25 teams (Iowa and Missouri) and four wins in the Big 12, a total that could have increased were it not for six losses against league foes by seven points or less. The 'Cats also scored a thrilling win over Nebraska in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament.

Things were looking up after an 11-18 (10th) season!

I don't remember Cortez Groves at all (I do remember Demond Davis and Belvis Noland), but he averaged 16+ ppg one season.

We really took it to Quinn Snyder that year, too.

I was at nearly every home game. Best player on a really bad team.

Reid came to Manhattan Fall 1996. Remember when he rained death on Missouri?

That was such a fun game with maybe 4K in attendance. We won 111-56 to open the Big 12 schedule and then lost to Mizzou 89-59 to end the Big 12. That 85 point swing between games has to be a record.

Also, his daughter is a really good player at Topeka Hayden right now.

I feel like it was a much bigger crowd than that. It was a Saturday afternoon, I'm pretty sure we honored the football team and I'm 100% certain the amazing Marching Cobras were in the house. I also remember making fun of Monty "mighty large" Hardge because he was crying. He made eye contact with me and it made me legitimately feel bad for him.
