Meh, adulterer who's daughter rebelled against him and was living opulently off the country while trying desperately to protect the roster of his baseball team.

If you thought Hitler or Stalin were okay, you'd definitely have no problem with Castro. Basically a short list of "progressive" superstars.

Easy man for some to hate, easy man for some to love/admire. He was wholly anti-American and anti-imperialist, so it's easy to see where those lines generally fall. Definitely killed a lot of people, and not very human rights friendly at all. But it's hard not to see why those who see America as not so great, as a great person, it takes massive balls to take over an island 90 miles from the US and keep it out of the US orbit for the better part of 60 years and be a constant thorn in the US side.

Personally I don't like him because of the angst he caused the US (all the fleeing Cubans, general death an destruction, inviting the USSR on to our doorstep, helping to make high fructose corn syrup be cheaper than goddamn sugar, taking away one of the party places for the US) but knowing the reasons for his rise, and why he's so popular in Latin America and other countries fighting against the encroachment of big bad America, is quintessential to understanding how we as America can try to salvage our reputation abroad.

Healthcare was free in Cuba much in the same way those Red Cross stations are free in refugee camps. Yes, it's free, but it's because you have no money and are living in a squalid refugee camp.

But to cranks like Bernie Sanders - who it bears repeating was the preferable candidate to liberals over HRC - that "free" healthcare was the silver lining to Castro's Cuba.

I don't think it has to be formally approved, but that it has to be involve one of the following 3:
1. Something work related
2. Something educational
3. family visiting family

Also there used to be a rule that US citizens could not spend money in Cuba so people would charter a complete trip thru a company in Mexico or another country but I believe Obama eliminated it.

You could always go to Cuba through charters, you just had to meet exemptions. Commercial flights literally started yesterday, but the exemptions still remain (according to the crooked press). Not sure how strict those are.

My mom's Canadian husband has been a few times and loves it. I had planned to go through Canada sometime in the next few years, but looks like I won't need to now.

Bad joke. I feel for them.

One of the richest people I've ever met was a Haitian. She was a camper of mine years ago. Her parents flew her and her big brother from Port-Au-Prince on a private jet to Portland, Maine then they had a car service take them to camp. They were both amazingly sweet kids, it was weird knowing how rich they were knowing how poor the country is. They had a ton of Haitian money on them that they were just giving away to Americans for souvenirs, I still have some of it, I'm sure its amazing how much food and clothes could be purchased for poor people with the money they gave away.
