Title: It was fun to beat Baylor
Post by: Kat Kid on November 19, 2016, 09:06:24 PM
Kansas State Athletics offer few true moments of happiness any more for me.  There has been too much pain, disappointment, anger and betrayal for me to ever love as truly, madly, deeply as I did back when that melodic phrase had currency with my female peers.  All of the memories are just as fuzzy, analog and dated as the YouTubes ripped from VHS.  The players were larger than life, not just because they were NFL talents, but also because I, we, were more invested.  The state of 21st century NCAA athletics has laid bare more and more of the things that we put out of sight, out of mind during the 90's and 2000's.

Cynicism and skepticism has overwhelmed the fan experience.  Not just the true scandals of criminality that have humbled some of the most revered names in college football, which have horrified everyone except the fan bases willing to excuse rapists and their protectors, but also the institutional rot that allowed regional conferences to be broken up in favor of a collection of television markets.  Capitalism has become such a central force behind college athletics, that every interaction feels transactional.

My disgust with John Currie's K-State Athletics, Inc. is both specific and contextual.  He is the perfect example of what we have sowed.  He is the perfect reflection of what the modern athletic department.  The "fans" are really just consumers and "games" are really just "opportunities for branding."  "Coaches" are "brand ambassadors" and though student-athletes are not officially recognized as labor, they are disposable.  Traditions are rough ridin' tagline, not an organic point of pride.  And wins, are only useful inasmuch as they feed the machine.

I take no pleasure in typing these thoughts.  It has been a long miserable march toward the current state of things.  I am actually ok with this new stage and have accepted it.

Today, I even felt some hope.  We beat the bad guys.

My son knows the fight song, he cheers for the team, he smiled a genuine smile when he found out we won after his nap.  He emptied a bag of clementines into the fridge crisper by dunking them over his little brother and saying he was practicing for the Wildcat Slam Jam.

He also believes Jesus was crucified on a "plus sign."

I too will indulge myself some magical thinking and embrace the mythology of LHC Bill Snyder for a last go round.  If the propagandists can't fill your heart with love, create your own and embrace it on your own terms.

Because the machine will carry on.

I yelled "Eat a back of dicks, Waco!" at my screen during one of the interceptions in the 3rd.

This season has been so weird for me as I pretty much have emotonally checked out of K-State athletics when the conference re-alignment started.

But today was a good one.  Eff Baylor.

Good win today. It has been hard for me to get motivated for games this year, but today was a fun game.

Looking back on the season, I just get increasingly pissed about dropping the WVU and OSU games. I'd still consider 200+ and a bowl trip a decent outcome, though.

Yea in some ways  I think this season is the law of averages expressing itself after 2011

Was really fun to Reap what Baylor Sowed.

^ this is prolly the biggest thing........other than maybe the rise of Barnes

will be interesting to see how much money they push together to try to lure in a new coach........i believe they will have to buy out all the assistants in the off season, as well........

Yeah, this is very much a 2011 season sans as many of the lucky breaks. Would be awesome to be 8-2 right now, but 6-4 with a not outside the realm possibility to be 8-4 when it's all said and done will be solid and we can set up nicely for a 9-10 win 2017.

Loved KK's post.

This is what makes me HATE oscar Weber even more...and John Currie for creating and sustaining the situation.

What John Currie has taken from me is difficult for me to articulate.  I tried gnashing of teeth and screaming and stomping my feet, but I cannot change the John Currie situation.  Hell, if LHC Bill Snyder cannot change it, how could I hope to?!? (BTW, it's totally confirmed that Bill refuses to even speak to Currie...another reason to love the crap out of Bill).

My only option is to just not care anymore.  I suppose I COULD look at it another way, and give Currie thanks for more quickly pushing me out the emotional door, what with the future of college sport being on an inevitable road to sterile, soulless, semi-pro status.  I have reached acceptance, I suppose.

Texas, TT and Baylor all complete shitholes right now and TCU in the toilet waiting for us to flush them. How many savior coaches are out there?

A hawks shirt that had "We Own Texas" on it would be pretty darn neat.

nice post, kk.  just a nice, solid conference road game ass whoopin.

especially on offense, the emergence of barnes having such a great performance (I would imagine the best ever by a wildcat freshman RB) gives me a lot of hope moving forward that maybe, just maybe, we'll have an identity on offense.

I saw a tweet that said it's the first time we've ever had a freshman RB net 4 TDs in a game - so from that perspective it's definitely best ever.

I was watching this game at my bros house and we noticed some Mormons rolling by his area on bikes.. well at half we went outside to throw around the pigskin and there they were on the front porch waiting for us.  :horrorsurprise: this was my actual face.. turns out they had been ringing his doorbell which does not work.. I think this divine intervention set up the second half comeback for the cats

First game this year that I truly felt satisfied after.  I am optimistic about this coming weekend as well.
