You mentioned Trump, and you’ve probably heard the argument, or the concern, that fake news somehow helped him get elected. What do you make of that?
My sites were picked up by Trump supporters all the time. I think Trump is in the White House because of me. His followers don’t fact-check anything — they’ll post everything, believe anything. His campaign manager posted my story about a protester getting paid $3,500 as fact. Like, I made that up. I posted a fake ad on Craigslist.
-
My FIL (Trump supporter) and my sister (HRC supporter) were appalled when Obama banned the pledge of allegiance from schools.
-
How about that picture of him being a gay muslim that he was trying to get off Facebook?
-
The guy even talks like Trump.........
You think you personally helped elect Trump?
I don’t know. I don’t know if I did or not. I don’t know. I don’t know.

The other day my perpetually angry liberal friends went into hysterics over a R obstructionist article from . . . :2014.

Those are always fun. Saw one of those the other day which was about Kanye leaving the country or something, which was posted in 2015, but ppl were reacting to it like it just happened.

paying protestors $3500 is just disgusting....

paying protestors $3500 is just disgusting....
Agreed. I mean, that better be per day and not include expenses and travel/accommodations at very least.
-
I fell for quite a few. Still not for certain yet this winning story is true.

At any given time, Coler says, he has between 20 and 25 writers. And it was one of them who wrote the story in the "Denver Guardian" that an FBI agent who leaked Clinton emails was killed. Coler says that over 10 days the site got 1.6 million views. He says stories like this work because they fit into existing right-wing conspiracy theories.
"The people wanted to hear this," he says. "So all it took was to write that story. Everything about it was fictional: the town, the people, the sheriff, the FBI guy. And then ... our social media guys kind of go out and do a little dropping it throughout Trump groups and Trump forums and boy it spread like wildfire."
trump voters will believe anything
i'm pretty sure yard dog sourced that story when saying clinton had killed 50 people

We've tried to do similar things to liberals. It just has never worked, it never takes off. You'll get debunked within the first two comments and then the whole thing just kind of fizzles out.

I can honestly say I did not anticipate liberals turning to McCarthyite commie scare tactics.

This election has been far more traumatic for liberals than 2000. It's broken their brains. Or as Scott Adams puts it, their cognitive dissonance is though the roof.

Exactly. What fake news?

What did the calculation take into account? If that's just the size of the ad revenue generated by fake news, it's not a complete calculation, because those people still demand something to take up their time, which could easily be met with, like, real news. Or cat videos, whichever.
-
It didn't dive that deep. It was probably just based on a projected amt of fake news that was on there this past year and the avg ad rate.
Given that so much of it revolved around the election, which won't be present next year, that would lessen the hit as well.
Even if it's half, that still a big number.

This like confirms that trump supporters fall for fake news
-
No, it basically says the fascist-y clinton democrats make up fake news, promote it, then conflate with legitimate news sources critical of clinton corruption in some feeble attempt to discredit their substantiated corruption. They even get their media mouthpieces to publish this bullshit scheme, get their Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) constituency (lib7, et al) to believe it and post their self made memes on the internet to spread misinformation.
Not exactly within the spirit of the 1st amendment.
-
I like that it confirms Trump supporters believe anything
-
Attempted on Trump and Sanders suppoters. Obviously there's a different set of fake news they employ on their own collection of retards. E.g, russian spies, hacked voting machines, support for blacks and gays, punishing banks, wealthy, etc..
-
Let me get this straight: the woman who concocted a "vast right wing conspiracy" to cover up her husband'S affairs, lied about dodging sniper fire, lied about the reason for setting up a private server and the extent of confidential info on that server, and blamed a terrorist attack on a youtube video is upset about "fake news"?
Hillary is right, fake news did cost her the election - her own fake news.
-
Also the person partially responsible for creating the fake news she's so mad about.
The dems are maintaing propaganda departments that rival stalin, castro and hitler (their political heros)
-
These fake news sites mainly started as people trying to discredit the politics of the party they oppose. Then they realized peddling this kind of stuff was incredibly lucrative this election cycle and couldn't help themselves.
-
So let me get this straight: Brian Williams, the guy who was suspended and fired for lying about Hurricane Katrina and being shot at in Afghanistan, is now a leading moral authority against "fake news"?
-

Yes, it's called "click bait," it's been going of for years, and there's about dozen of them at the bottom of many liberal websites like HuffPo and Salon that are suddenly so outraged about fake news.
-
This thread really outs the people who support and believe fake news. Very accurate thread name if I do say so myself :adored:

This is accurate.
-
You know what fake news reminds me of? The fact that Hillary Clinton should be indicted.
-
Lib is so pissed that the fake news narrative of the likes of CNN, MSNBC, WP, NYT's and others failed to get HRCWP elected.
-
Fake News = HRC had sex with aliens, russia and trump colloborated to hack her email
Fake News =/ Posting copies of clinton campaign emails on the web, direct quoting her, pointing out the disaster that was her time as sos, noting extremely suspect donations to her foundation that correspond with political favors to really bad people, recognizing how irresponsible the email server was, or how absurd it was to lie about it and destroy tens of thousands of email from it after it had been subpoenaed.
Alas, the b.o. admin, in its unprecedented fascism and selective enforcement of law, would like you to believe the latter. We're so fortunate neither he or hrc will have a modicum of power in several weeks.
-
Fsd still thinks Hillary personally killed an fbi agent.

Lib advisors confirm that WL's was legit = intolerant left ratcheting up the rage factor 250%. So pissed when they're exposed.

The 2013 NDAA that Obama signed ostensibly negates the Smith-Mundt act of 1948 aka the prohibition of the US gov't to propagandize the American people in the same exact ways they propagandize foreign countries/non US entities (like terrorist groups). This includes such things as . . . fake news stories.
Thanks Obama

IN THE PAST six weeks, the Washington Post published two blockbuster stories about the Russian threat that went viral: one on how Russia is behind a massive explosion of “fake news,” the other on how it invaded the U.S. electric grid. Both articles were fundamentally false. Each now bears a humiliating editor’s note grudgingly acknowledging that the core claims of the story were fiction: The first note was posted a full two weeks later to the top of the original article; the other was buried the following day at the bottom.

In the day and age where being first on line matters more than being accurate, this kind of bullshit is something we may never get around. Truth and perception have always been pretty mumped, but now its much easier to eff.

The name depends upon the motivation behind the lies and misinformation. If it's just to gin up web traffic for ad revenue, it's called "clickbait." If the purpose is also to advance a political agenda it's called "propaganda."
The term "fake news" is itself propaganda, put out there by liberal journalists trying to suggest that they should be the arbiters of what news is real and fake, which is pretty laughable coming from news organizations that are in the business of propaganda.
-
The people who create these stories are mostly doing it to laugh at people stupid enough to believe them, imo.

But scholars also debate whether partisans actually believe the misinformation and how many are knowingly giving the wrong answer to support their partisan team (a process called expressive responding).

K.T. McFarland, the deputy national security adviser, had given Trump a printout of two Time magazine covers. One, supposedly from the 1970s, warned of a coming ice age; the other, from 2008, about surviving global warming, according to four White House officials familiar with the matter.
Trump quickly got lathered up about the media’s hypocrisy. But there was a problem. The 1970s cover was fake, part of an Internet hoax that’s circulated for years. Staff chased down the truth and intervened before Trump tweeted or talked publicly about it.

White House and former campaign aides have tried to make sure Trump’s media diet includes regular doses of praise and positive stories to keep his mood up – a tactic honed by staff during the campaign to keep him from tweeting angrily.
