LOL, not if you told me that those 167 would come from 15-19 attempts, of which a third of that was third down completions of 8 yards or more. If Burns plays the whole game, and if Stanford wants to, they throw for 300 on us. Now, because this is a sunshine thread, I'll add that rush defense was very good and our pass rush improved as the game went on...which is impressive because it's usually the DLine that tires out first when they face an offense has a bell cow running back.

Half agree with Pete on the 3rd down points, but that dramatically improved in the 2nd (as MiR notes about adjustments). Yes this came could have turned around in our favor if we get those early 3rd and longs. But against the number 8 team, you can't under value the point you, Pete, later made about the line holding up and the entire D making it tough for Stanford all night. Sure Stanford kept it close to the vest, but let's not act like they were stringing us along all night.

Tanner Wood/Reggie Walker are really strong on the other side of Willis.
I think we have a legitimately good DL and LB group. McCaffrey was getting his ass kicked most of the night. Even the last TD he scored, he didn't have his normal speed.

I'd say it was pretty impressive that they didn't get blown off the line in the second half, considering how long they were on the field in the first half.

The second half minus the McCaffrey TD was about as good of D as you could ask for, and that TD was IMO 90% misalignment and guys subbing in and out too much. Had we been set and ready I doubt it would have happened. We did a real good job bottling them up especially in the second half. My favorite was seeing them do one of the almost false counter plays where McCaffrey looks to follow the line and then he doubles back and we were right there smack him to the ground. We consistently limited him throughout the game. Also, other than the bomb pass broken coverage TD, most of their passes we short, well run routes but ultimately didn't go for much passes, just wish we had on a few of their drives in the second quarter during 3rd and long situations we had stopped those first downs, but, by the second half that was no more.
The defense looked more than game to play, and played well enough to win the game, too bad the offense was really not able to do the same. Though I will say our run o-line is actually pretty decent, our pass o-line is atrocious. Also, Stanford's secondary was pretty good, though they were getting helped massively on a lot of pass interference no calls.

How can you not be ready for Stanford to line up and give it to McCaffrey after the on side? Infuriating after such a good game to that point.

If we win our next 11 games there is a 99.99% chance we go to playoffs.
I think there is .1% chance that happens, but if your goal is the playoffs a road loss to Stanford doesn't preclude that.

K-State is a good team, and should win some fun games at home this year. The only real problem is the offensive line which should improve as the season moves along. I still say 8 wins.

Yep. Crazy how we can tell who the best receivers are watching the offense run about 50 plays or whatever and the coaches get to spend all spring and weeks during the summer with the team and they're completely clueless.

Yea, true that, I was more referring to the fact that we seem to have more options at WR that can actually make a play in space and/or take a 50-50 ball from a defender. Burton doesn't do that very well, although he does look improved from last season.

After this week, I have changed my opinion on where our Cats will finish in the conference. This has zero to do with the Cats.
I cannot recall our conference being worse than it is right now. If we just remove turnovers on offense, settle for 3's, play decent special teams, and use our patented "we hope your offense screws up" defense, we could surprise some people.
There are three teams that I believe that can make twice the amount of mistakes as us in a game, and still beat us. Those are UT, OU, and Baylor. I think the team speed and overall talent of all three of those teams is significantly higher than us by a margin that will make it very hard to beat them.
Then, as _Fan and others have pointed out, everyone else seems similar, apart from ISU and KU (the "Nortards" are back). Those four teams cannot afford to turn the ball over more than us if they hope to beat us.
I hope we make this season really ugly...like 3 yards and a cloud of dust, and spaghetti brain and shoulder hernia the crap out of our quarterbacks. Use all three of those motherfuckers and just speed option and QB dive them into hell and back. We do this ala 2011, and we beat at least 2 of the 4 "middle" teams, and steal one from the top three. That along with sweeping the Nortards, and we are sitting with 5-4 conference record with 2 non-con wins.
In summary, who wants to join me in Memphis for the Autozone Liberty Bowl (Wednesday, Dec. 28th, 8pm, ESPN)?!?!?!

They are much worse. The new staff isn't using Mike Warren, the Big Twelve's best RB not at OU, he has 19 rushes for 58 yards in two games.

My thought on TCU is that we have them at the very end of the year. If they continue to struggle, and considering that their defense has struggled pretty badly, and Hill isn't what they needed him to be, my guess is that they're probably limping into that 12/3 game with seven wins or so. Other than Senior Day, there won't be a lot for them to play for.
Tech and OSU have had tough times in Manhattan recently. OSU has only won once in Manhattan in 26 years (2010). Nothing I see from them leads me to believe they're that much more talented to win in a place they traditionally struggle to win.
WVU is pretty simple; Holgo struggles to beat Snyder. I think the teams are comparable in talent for the most part. They've got WVU at a neutral site the week before us, while we have Missouri State. we "should" be a little more rested and prepared for that one, but who knows?
I'm still waiting for something to happen with Baylor. Maybe they'll get through the year fine. I don't know. It just feels like a chowder keg that could go off at any time, and the entire season will go off of the rails.
I'm interested to see how the Buechele does on the road somewhere. Texas looks good, though.
