Title: problem in need of solving
Post by: Kat Kid on July 26, 2016, 11:06:23 AM
I have work to do, but I don't want to do it.

No, not menial work of a physical laborer.  Sweat of the brow from brain exertion.

I have FOMO and also resentment at the pointlessness of the project.

Things that have worked "ok" so far:

1) instrumental/techno/billie holliday/radiohead music on headphones
2) working at a coffee house

If working at a coffee shop works, you could look at The Fellow coworking space.  You can go and try it for a day and see if it works for you but if you're the type of person that needs to get away from the distractions, its worth a shot.  They also have free (included) Arrow Coffee there.

I've read that rewarding yourself for work done is effective for some people.  Like if you work for an hour straight then reward yourself with another cup of coffee and 10 minutes of BBS time.  For me punishment seems to work better.  So like if I don't work for an hour straight I punch myself in the balls.

If it takes 1 hr to do that work, wait until like 45min before it absolutely has to be done, then punch it out in a panic while being all anxious about it.  Used to work really well for me in college.   :dunno:

I can't work unless there is some sort of pressure or time crunch, so I just wait until it feels like I need to do work and then I'm in the zone.

I used to subscribe to this method. I do not any longer. I am happier for it.

I usually create some fake requirement of inputs that delays the start of my work and that helps me procrastinate.

If there was a problem,
Yo, I'll solve it.
Check out the hook while my DJamer revolves it....

(So what I'm saying is listen to some early 90s hip-hop music)

I like to make a To Do list with small pieces of work so I can check them off and feel like I've accomplished something throughout the day.

This is a very good strategy.  Often gets you to think about the big task and break it in to small pieces.

I do something similar, but I try to hit one big task between smaller ones.  If I knock one big task off in the morning and afternoon I think I've had a pretty good day, because there are so many little things that take little time and energy.

A true pacifist wouldn't assault the world with a performance such as this.

Not the world, just a small event center in MHK. Also, thanks for reading my posts!

There was this thing that absolutely without a doubt holy crap had to get done yesterday, and it didn't get done.  Still might not get done today.  And people are kinda taking it pretty well all things considered.  Kinda makes me think these "deadlines" aren't really deadlines at all.

I'm going to break something down very quickly for my boy kk...

none of what seems like a big deal to you right now really matters. it really just doesn't. also, everything will be fine regardless of whether you think you get it all done and done well enough. you're fine. it's fine. chill out. you're a good person who people like and want to see succeed. everything will work out.

see my advice to kk. none of anything really ever matters. just be a decent person that people like and everything will work out.

I just try to be the very best version of myself that I can.  The one nice thing about this job is I'm not emotionally invested in it, so I can check out when my ass his the car seat.

I do miss my old job tho.
