Sure, they all suck, but which ones clean?
Scenario--
I have no pets, but 3 small kids. Moving in to a new house, going to re carpet and want to take care of the carpet and keep it sanitary for the kids.
Currently have a very mediocre vacuum. Have never owned one I really liked before.
Is a stain or steam cleaner worth it for me?

I have a normal and baby dyson. Both suck....IN A GOOD WAY!
-
Can confirm Dyson makes a good vacuum. We have three kids and a GSD that sheds a ton.
-
Bed Bath and Beyond lady said she has had more issues with Dyson than their top of the line Sharks. Inlaws have a Dyson and haven't complained about.
If you go to BB&B they usually let you use your 15% or 20% coupons on vacs too.
The one I got, thinking for pets, but we don't have carpet and our pup doesn't get on the furniture so....

You may recall from combo fanning days of old that I once was worried my house was going to be robbed for my Dyson, which still may be the most valuable item I own that could reasonably be stolen.
-
Dyson, no complaints

It's a rough ridin' vacuum. I'd be worried about you if you did have complaints.
Kk- does your current vacuum work? If yes then do nothing and check back when it stops. Depending on the color of your new carpet you may want to consider a steam cleaner wet vac thing which you can buy for @$130.

i think i want to know about those things

Just a home carpet cleaner. You can google Hoover steam vac to get an idea. We have one and use it once a month in our main area because our carpet is close to white and we have two boys plus a dog. It's p good.

Yep. Area rug in the family room is main concern. Dog loves to roll around and scratch her back there. Plus three long-haired women. Ugg.
-
I have a dc50, it has been better than the Shark and Electrolux I tried and returned at Costco. I will say the Dyson's carpet performance is fine but I don't love it on hardwoods & tile so I usually use a ~$100 Electrolux cordless stick vac. I also don't like how the Dyson's hose/handle assembly work -
It is a little cheap and flimsy feeling.
All that said I will be buying a cordless Dyson's when the Electrolux battery goes to crap because Dyson's do suck and go hard.

I am on my second Dyson. I have lived both. A family member of mine worked for them when they first came out, so I got my first one cheap. I had it for 10 years or so, and then paid retail for my current one at Bed Bath and Beyond a couple years ago...it's like the middle of line model.
Dyson till I die, man.

Oh, I have. Have you tried an Oreck?
Dyson tries to trick you with fancy words like "cyclone" and "turning radius". Oreck just puts everything that was on the ground in the bag.

We used to use a push broom made from horse hair to sweep out the house before we had electricity. I know how to get dirt off the floor!

Two labs and one small child. Dyson does well keeping up!
-
If you are re-carpeting anyway, I would strongly consider going carpet-less if that's an option. After owning hardwoods I've realized how much gross stuff just collects on the floor that you'd never even notice on carpets.

That is kind of why we want carpets. I am being realistic about the time I can commit to cleaning. I would rather not be confronted with that choice hourly. We have a cleaning person that comes 2x a month and vacuuming is more of a once or twice weekly thing.

that is great price, I think I paid more for my first one one of these 8 years ago. My biggest bitch is the crevice tool is stored in the bracket so you have to go take the whole stick off even tho you only want to use the wand & crevice tool.
-
I had to google "crevice tool" and was happy that it wasn't the same thing as the little detachable hand vacuum. My biggest bitch before even getting it is that it's turquoise polka-dot'd but someone in the reviews took a picture of it that showed it wasn't quite as goofy as best buy's picture showed.
-
I want a polka dot vacuum now.
-
I can't even decide if polka dots go into the "pros" or "cons" column
-
Polka-dot'd was the only of the $150-level that were on sale for $80. When I was looking to see if there were other options, I saw there was a camo one.
-
A camo vacuum. Wow. What a time to be alive
-
I bought this because my wife wanted a camo vacuum cleaner. So I bought it for her and she likes it.
Highly Recommended! This is an awesome vacuum. camouflage makes everything better!

Look at the 4th pic. The "crevice tool" is attached to the stick and is in safety blaze orange, so that helps one find the whole unit and also casts doubt on skipper's bitch.

I noticed though when I was trying to figure out how to get the picture off their weird zoom-in site onto here that the features still listed the tool as being "in" the crevice. Guess we'll crack this mystery tomorrow when I receive mine, or days/weeks later when I get around to opening it.

We have a Roomba (Rosie) and a Dyson (Jarrod). Both are great. The Roombas are good for letting you go longer between regular vacuuming. Also they're adorable and hilarious. It gets stuck from time to time but generally finds it way back to its little dock.
We have all tile and hardwood in our house and I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to carpet after finding out how much crap gets on the floors.
-
That little polka-dot'd rough rider works just fine for my place. There's a hook on the crevice tool and a slot on the stick for it. A negative, and maybe this is how tall all vacuums are, is that it's not tall enough for me to max comfortably vacuum while hoverboard'n.

-
Are you already so good at hoverboarding that you could do it while vacuuming? (If the vacuum was tall enough.)
-
Yeah, vacuuming is no different than riding around my apartment, it's just that you have to point a stick at stuff while you're board'n.

At that price, yeah, if you've got a smaller place and little carpet. It wouldn't do for a big house full of carpet. For me, it was that $80 polka-dot'd vacuum vs. nothing at all and continuing to use a broom and swiffer as needed.

Well I have no carpet and only use a broom

We have all tile and hardwood in our house and I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to carpet after finding out how much crap gets on the floors.
GfA and other Roomba owners: WonderMeal Estate is an all-hardwood house. Three kids, toddler and up. (Think Kat Kid but 2.5 years from now.) They spill a lot of things on the floor, and it's a real pain to clean it up all the time, so we've been thinking about getting a Roomba.
Do you think it could stand up to lots of kid crumbs? Also, we have like a 1 to 1.5-inch dropoff between the front half of our house and the back half. (I'm not really sure why.) Could the Roomba navigate around that or would we have to set up some sort of ramp thing for it?
Also, is there a Roomba that mops and vacuums? Would pay top dollar.
Finally--do I have to get a separate Roomba for the upstairs and the downstairs, or could one take care of both?
-
wondermeal only comes to this blog when he needs help. :frown:
maybe you should attend to your classical music thread, wm.
