Title: Is the NIT selection process fair?
Post by: CHONGS on March 08, 2016, 02:55:07 PM
I just found out that smaller schools that win their regular season conference championship, but lose in their tournament get an automatic (i.e unearned) bid.  That is completely bogus and screws hard working teams like KSU who had to play in toughest conference.  I wouldn't be surprised if a new KSU rule get implemented if we get snubbed in favor of some team like Albany.

that's really just more schedulemakers, imo.

Surely they'll realize if we played in any of those conference we would be outright champions (even with a really young team).

We beat the best team in the league, and therefore the country, in the best conference in College Basketball History, and we could get left out.

Let that sink in.

There should be a rule about how many top 25 RPI teams you lose to.  Once you cross the threshold of like 8 or 9 of those, you should automatically be in regardless what your W's are.

Also, if you know for a fact that you could win a champy in another conf, Auto Bid City!

I bet if someone really looked into it, the ball bounces a completely different way in those other conferences.

The NIT is run by midmajors. They will invite just enough P5 programs to keep their little tournament on ESPN, but it's really all about trying to put a program like Wofford into the tournament so they can reject a clearly better program like Kansas State. The NIT committee absolutely hates the P5 conferences and all they stand for so they try to stack the field so a midmajor can win their tournament.

Yup. Last year only 25% of teams in the NIT field were from a P5 conference.

Yes, and notice how the Old Dominion bracket doesn't have a single P5 team. Oh, what a convenient way to get one of your midmajor friends into the Final 4. What a rough ridin' joke. This tournament can kiss my ass.

It's gotten old.  Sure some of this is just cathartic to deal with the tuck talking points, but it's no longer funny.

I can't believe anyone is seriously discussing the ins-n-outs of an NIT bid.

That's pathetic!

is the NIT selection process fair?  i don't know- i don't want to say that it's unfair.  one thing that is obvious is that the NIT tourney selection committee certainly has their favorites.  you're either in the cool kids club or you're not.

when "being the only team in the country that played 16 or 17 games against top-25 RPI teams" shows up on the committee's Caller-ID and the call gets forwarded to voicemail, what does that tell you?
