Title: DataLew12's Data Corner!
Post by: DQ12 on February 04, 2016, 03:17:54 PM
Hey college football heads!  Dlew12 here (the "D" stands for "Data").

Statistically, what's your favorite way to measure whether a team has a good offense or defense?  For starters, I think we can all agree that pace has to be a factor.

I'm certainly no expert, but when I look at this stuff, I think yards per play and TO% are the crème de la crème of offensive/defensive metrics.

In talking to others (Mixed Nutz), I've learned that some people actually think Points Per Possession is the best indicator.  My problem with that is that it ignores starting field position, which is mostly a function of a team's offense and special teams.

What say you??  Let's talk DATA!

I like points per play and TO% also. I think points per drive has some merit as well.

I usually look at the two systems that footballoutsiders.com uses.

FEI accounts for First Down Rate, Available Yards Percentage, Explosive Drives, Methodical Drives, and Value Drives. Definitions and this year's ratings are here: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/feioff

S&P accounts for efficiency, explosiveness, field position, finishing drives, and turnovers using a number of different factors. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ncaaoff

I like looking at all this stuff and its tough to narrow it down, but if I had to go with an easy measure I'd use a combo of points and yards per play.
