In anticipation of this season culminating in a sub .500 record and oscar's subsequent firing, I am announcing the official oscar Weber Firing Announcement Contest. Does he make it to the end of the year? Is he left at the tarmac ala Lane Kiffin style? Does the AD even wait until he gets off the court or do they Jim Wooldridge him? Who knows! If this thread is lucky enough to earn gE sponsorship like it's football equivalent, there could (could) be a prize.
Our rules will follow the same from the football board (copied directly from Pete): 1) Name the date on which the announcement will be made, 2) Name the approximate time of day, and 3) How is the announcement made...what is official medium and distribution channel for the announcement. Here's what we are NOT looking for....speculation about the next coach....that is NOT important in this thread. :dubious: The closest prediction wins!
My prediction:
Thursday, March 10th. Noon Central. Email from ADJC distributed to Cat fans.
-
1) big 12 tournament
2) wednesday night
3) currie email
4) 2019
-
I'm not even sure we have this blog registered out far enough to cover this contest.
-
Never
-
I mean he's getting probably going to get an extension for his valiant efforts this year.
-
Currie doesn't even remember we have a men's basketball program. Until the FB team has a new coach, then maybe oscar will be evaluated. He will retire here.
-
oscar will not retire here. May he have a longer leash than he should? Yes. But he will not retire here. He nor Currie can ruin KSU basketball. Sheesh.
-
Does losing in basketball really bother people? :billdance: is still the number one topic
-
oscar will not retire here. May he have a longer leash than he should? Yes. But he will not retire here. He nor Currie can ruin KSU basketball. Sheesh.
They already have.
-
Pffft no they have not. Good lord.
-
He will retire here. next season will be better than this one.
-
He will retire here. next season will be better than this one.
We all know it's this.
-
Pffft no they have not. Good lord.
Well then who did it?
-
I blame rising conference revenues and additional tier 3 money. falling bball revenue just doesn't hurt bad enough.
-
Currie would have to admit a mistake in order to fire 6ruce. John Currie does not admit mistakes.
That is all. Enjoy 6ruce.
-
Eventually, ADJC will fire oscar. Donors.
-
Assistant coaches wI'll get the ax first. We should not be having so much trouble with zone defenses against us. This may all be a plan to get us to the MVC by Currie. As long as Currie is here, oscar will be the wIzard of weiner.

I'm just looking forward to see where he'll take everyone for a post press conference treat! Seriously, that's about all I'm interested in.

Everyone acts like this was such a horrible loss. Did anyone really think, when the season started, that we'd split with ISU, a team loaded with seniors and veterans. ISU was in the top-5 for a few weeks of the season. ISU beat Iowa, who is now looking like a team to be reckoned with. ISU has a go-to scorer, who will probably be at least, a second team All-American. ISU has an experienced point guard who seldom turns the ball over and has a chance to play on the next level. ISU has other athletes who fill roles and everyone on their team can shoot the ball. Were we supposed to beat them this year? We have three freshmen playing major minutes, and a couple of other guys who were reserves last season also playing major minutes. I'm not making excuses, but geez, let's come back down to earth. In a couple of years, maybe even next year, fan bases will be talking about how difficult it will be to beat K-State because of their experience. Do people on here really understand how hard it is to beat a team with a veteran point guard, an athletic big man, and a senior, four-year starter? In a few years, that will be us. Lighten up on this team. I'm not concerned about wins this year. I'm concerned about how we compete, and how we grow. Right now, I'm pleased with both. This team doesn't OWE any of us anything but effort. They don't OWE us an NCAA Tournament appearance or a certain number of wins, or a certain standing in the conference. They just don't.

Man, we love splitting with teams. Makes it so we can go close to .500 and no one gets their feelings hurt because we both have won a game.
Participation trophies and orange slices for everyone.

Beating a zone is more of a shooting/talent issue than a offensive scheme issue. This is going to be one of the worst shooting K-State teams of all time. Right now it has the worst 3PT% and eFG% of any team since 03 and it really isn't close. The Cortez Groves teams is probably the only team that shot worse than this one, but I'll have to look that up when I have a chance. Having a nice zone offense is fine, but eventually the way most teams beat zones is hitting some shots, when you shoot <30% from 3 that is really tough.
-
We kicked our best shooters off the team
-
Shooting aside, the zone offense is comical. Attacking a zone properly fuels better shooting.

i have a feeling next year's team isn't going to be bad enough to get oscar fired.
so,
3/3/18
-
The 17-18 team will be a tournament team tho
-
March 2019
He's going to get 3 more seasons to do eff all because 90% of our fanbase are mouth breathers
-
He will get until this frosh crew are seniors. If we don't lose him prior to that, we won't lose him at all.
-
It's going to be awesome when Claws graduates without making the tournament and powertards say we should keep oscar because "graduating kids is what it's really about"
-
If he keeps this group of freshman he is going to the tourney with them Jr and Sr year.
-
If he keeps this group of freshman he is going to the tourney with them Jr and Sr year.
This is why he will never be fired here.
He's just not Wooly bad. oscar is a solid Xs and Os guy who recruits decently, but has a strange personality and a knack for not fully taking responsibility when things are going bad. As a result he has a tough time maintaining a program and comes across poorly in the media if you really listen to what he says. The constant blame shifting with an occasional "that's on me" is extremely annoying.
However, while he's going to consistently have some bad to very bad seasons like last year, he'll probably also make the tournament 2-3 times every 5 years. A successful run in the tournament seems unlikely, but you never know.
Anyway, he's here as long as he wants.
-
I'm good with him not getting fired for making the tournament half of the time.
-
Sounds pretty good, actually. Every year: Will this be one of those years that we make the tournament??? Maybe!
-
I'm good with him not getting fired for making the tournament half of the time.
Only if we don't squeak in the other half of the time. I don't want to rotate between not going and going just to get our ass kicked immediately.
-

That is the exact definition of bruceketball
-

and if he doesn't keep them, they were just bad kids, not his fault, etc.

This is basically oscar's ceiling with winning the 8-9 or 7-10 game as the big payoff for enduring everything FAN listed.
Next year should be pretty good even if Wes never develops into a 3pt threat and if we can get anything out of the Meats that are still wrapped in cellophane.
However, my guess is they don't give us much and Hot Horndogs ends up playing 20 minutes a game. To be fair, I expected BRIAN_ROHLEDER to have a similar role on this years team so maybe oscar finds a JC big this spring.
-
Bullnuts and xWhomper will be available as bigs next year. I'm assuming at least one will be decent. oscar has been good at getting players that seem to be better than I expected consistently.
-
If he keeps this group of freshman he is going to the tourney with them Jr and Sr year.
and if he doesn't keep them, they were just bad kids, not his fault, etc.
and then he gets another year of "young team, these guys will come good". The oscar Cycle is in perpetual motion

Everyone that knows how the rest of oscar's tenure is going to play out. So no one, but also a lot of gE posters at the same time.

How's that? One is a known, one is unknown.

I stay more positive than most, but I try to be realistic too. I still care about following the team, the players, and the stats and I will post about them, but knowing that this is likely not a tournament team is disappointing. I don't hate oscar as much as most, but he still does and says a lot of things that annoy me as well. There have been some really fun times of following K-State basketball in the last decade or so (including while oscar is here), but the last season and a half have been filled with more bad than good.

What are some SDK approved things for us to discuss this basketball season?
-
If oscar spent more time working on how to beat a zone defense instead of posting on message boards we might not be so shitty
learnin, that's precisely why our former coach was able to stay in the top half of the conference for five years, although his final three years he regressed in the standings. The bottom half of the Big 12 during Martin's years was pathetic. Now, those programs have made a commitment to winning, by hiring successful, proven coaches. Consequently, their recruiting has also improved. This conference is now a meat-grinder. Look at KU's skimpy 7 point win at home the other day against one of those former bottom-feeders. The difference between teams now, in how they finish in the standings, could turn on a a missed three at the buzzer, an overtime loss at home, a defensive lapse in the final minute ... you name it. The margin is razor thin. To me, it's about experience. Inexperienced teams just don't seem to win those kind of games. That will flip for us in the next 3 years. Regardless of what others say on the forum, Marcus Foster's selfishness and lack of leadership set this program back. We basically had to start over again after last year's fiasco.

Hahaha i approve all banter. I was just genuinely curious about what I asked, in an AppleJack sort of way.
-
I like the unknown, however, I want my sports unknown to have a ceiling that isn't as obviously low as it has been lately. That isn't fun.
-
Is it fun saying the same negative things over and over?
i think the weber era has been more fun for negative-on-bball posters than for positive-on-bball posters. but it's hard to know, really. hard to wear another man's shoes.

I haven't watched any of the last two games, and I quit watching the first half of OU to watch Frank vs. Vandy.

Yep, that's why KSU should never begrudge a negative fan.
I'm even more apathetic now that tobias almost never chats. Not even sure where my renocat roster card is.

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
It was the wildest arena in the Big 12. The league's best student section was cheering on a fiery head coach who was leading a nationally-ranked team that featured one of the nation's top freshmen recruits.
In Manhattan, KS.
The coach, Frank Martin, drove his Wildcats into multiple NCAA tournaments, ultimately reaching the Elite-8 in 2010.
Suddenly, the most raucous arena in Kansas wasn't in Lawrence. (Sorry, Jayhawk fans!)

I'd say the percentage chance that at least one of them doesn't rise to at least the level of DJamer, solid contributor, is roughly 100%.

I had a dream last night that Currie fired him during a timeout at a football game. He came on the jumbo tron to make a 'special announcement' and the crowd went nuts. I wish you all could have experienced that with me.
-
Who needs to win when we have elite Holefighters that fought like hell to come back from an opening game of blindfold bucket banging. Almost Oscar, almost got them to a win, but ....
To Currie this is progress. To frustrated fans watching a BB game, it is equivalent to spending an afternoon plucking butt crack hairs. Action but really not fun.

Well, he will likely retire at some point.
-
If Weber continues to have trouble keeping kids then he'll be gone in the next year or two. As long as he has a freshman class, about twice a decade, that can go to a couple of tournaments then he'll keep his job. Tucks are going to start feeling foolish though if they keep pointing to the freshman and oscar keeps making them look like idiots by running them off/not being able to retain them. That's our only chance of getting rid of him.
-
every game i watch im just praying oscar will have a full on self meltdown that leads to him hitting someone on t.v.

This could work. This does not fit into Currie's #Family marketing plan at all.
