Not gonna lie - I'm gonna buy a few tickets. I only play maybe once a year when the jackpot gets high enough to justify (to me) wasting a few bucks on astronomical odds.

Can we also talk about all of the moronic flawed analogies about powerball odds? The worst one, "you have better odds of becoming president than you do in winning the lottery." So stupid. There have been four presidents since powerball began, we will have four powerball winners before April.

You could waste hundreds or thousands playing powerball all year long without significantly improving your odds over spending a few bucks playing once per year for the huge jackpot. So I'm still engaging in irrational behavior but at least I'm wasting almost nothing on it.

Yep, it's not about playing being a waste, its spending $20 a week when you're making $30,000 in a household of 5 that's problematic. I can't stand the scolds who constantly harp about the lottery being a dumb investment.

probably around break even. 1.3b is .806b paid up front. federal taxes would reduce that by .25, so .6045b./292 = $2.07. but that's in a no income tax state. if you don't already live in one, i don't know if you would be allowed to find out you won, then move before you take payment. if not, then state taxes would probably reduce it to just below break even. but dependent on the state.

Monies Kansas gets from its lotteries goes mainly to economic development and building prisons. This is really a voluntary tax on the poor. Hey poor stupid bastard take that 10 dollars you have and buy a nearly worthless piece of paper so your kids won't have food to eat. Why don't we give lotto tickets instead of welfare checks?
