This morning is the Pack Pinewood Derby day for Pete and Little Pete. This is our second year (Wolf). We won our age group (Bobcat Den) last year, so there is a LOT of pressure on us this year to take it up a notch and place at the Pack level. Pressure makes diamonds though.
I don't feel good about it this year, like I did last year. I was out of town for work, and didn't get to participate in any practice runs last night. We were whipping fools' asses in practice runs last year, and suckers knew what was what.
This year our pinewood baby is going to make it's first run when it counts.
I bet this is how most heroes feel before their big moments in history.
-
Seems like you should have had some practice runs
-
I wish I still had a picture of my pine wood derby cars. I only entered 3. Won 2. :) Good luck, Pete.

Graphite the crap out of those shafts. And when it comes to derby races if you aren't cheating you definitely aren't trying.
-
I totally graphited the eff out of it. Sanded the axels down, camber angled wheels.....and between you and me, that left front wheel rides REAL light.
-
It's back weighted exactly to the point I wanted.
-
Balances about a half inch or so in front of the rear wheels
-
My son and wife handled the paint job and racing stripes while I was out of town. We'll leave that at that.
-
Slow release helium bubble just prior to weigh in?
Gonna win 'em all! (using Tapatalk)

I am a bit concerned about one of my real axels. Wood split when I was putting it in, so I might have a mid race repair in my future.

t's and p's. Nobody ever wins after a mid race repair.

We were slow.
-
They had a crash. Some dads didn't remove the last cars. Our slammed into theirs. I blame mismanagement!
-
I mean, we will prolly finish top 5 in our age group, but whatever
-
Best of luck to little Pete.
Success in the pine wood derby is an excellent jumpstart to a successful life.
A top 3 finish and you might as well punch his ticket to Harvard. If he finishes outside the top 5.....well, the world needs ditch diggers too.

Wolf is when it gets serious AF

I was so disappointed with this as a kid. All the best cars were just wedge shaped. Looked like they hardly spent any time on it.

the first one that dobberjr built looked awesome. Glued one Lego in place and then built a Lego car. It was slow as eff and he was pretty disappointed, but he basically did it all himself at the age of 6 or 7. I didn't know that I was supposed to build it and give him credit until we showed up on race day. Kids who still pissed themselves had rocketed propelled pieces of wood.
Our approach changed the next year.

I won the whole damn thing my Wolf year with a Herbie the Love Bug look-alike.

You got that right.
Next year, we get back into earning hardware.

When it comes to pinewood derby, there's three kinds of dads: (1) Dads who don't give a crap and either don't help or do a shitty job; (2) dads who secretly want to win and do most of the work but they know that's not something to be proud of so they keep it low key, and (3) dads who do all the work and don't even bother to hide that they did all the work.
i'm solidly Dad 2. As a Dad 2, I rough ridin' loathe Dad 3s. There's nothing more annoying than those assholes who show up on race day with their little tackle boxes full of gear, custom carrying cases, etc. They don't even let their kids hold the cars. Last year at district, one car had working headlight. I'm not even shitting you. And they're always the same basic profile, aren't they? Some dumpy engineer-type. Hey all you Dad 3s - get mumped. Seriously. Have the decency to at least let the car look like your kid had a modicum of involvement in crafting your pinewood dick substitute.
-
My dad was a (1) and needless to say, my car got smoked.

Aren't there any dads who build the thing with their kid, guiding the build but allowing the kid to do a lot of the work and learning skills in the process?
LPDCIQ here.

I won 1st place as a Bear, and then thought I could back it up as a Weblo but didn't. I'll look for the trophy later tonight

I was sick on pinewood derby day but my stud 1a dad went and raced it for me.

I have never done pinewood derby as a son or as a dad.

I don't remember how my races turned out. I didn't really like boy scouts

The Derby is Cub Scouts. It's pretty much the only cool thing about Cub Scouts. They only camp once or twice a year.

:buh-bye: off to find the pedal pull tractor thread :Carl:

Pulled out all the stops this year. Wedge, tungsten weights, sanded and polished the wheels, polished the axels, even polished the insides of the wheel hubs with a q-tip. Damned if it didn't work. First place in Pack, onward to District!
Today I am Super Dad 2. I also discovered my wife is a secret Mom 2. She was pacing the floor, monitoring race times from other heats. She leaned in and whispered at one point "I think we've got this." Awesome.
-
Congratulations KSU. Victory is sweet.

Great work, but I am not surprised. This board is a breeding ground of excellence.

i guess I just don't get why an adult would do what ksuw did. Dad 2 seems like the worst of the 3.

I will never do any of this. My kids will play soccer, tennis, basketball and baseball. I wont make my kids 4H either like I did.

menu of options. they will do yardwork/garden/cook if they want to or not.

My only real gripe about our Cub Scout pack is that a majority of the kids are pretty weird and/or screwed up. It was probably the same way when I was a scout but I notice it more now as an adult. Of all the friends my son plays sports with, not a single one is in scouts with him. I want him to do scouts because the camp outs and high adventure stuff gets really fun as they get older, but I worry he may lose interest if we can't recruit a few more mainstream kids.
-
Probably has something to do with openly hating gay people
-
Probably better if they were aborted, amirite KSU?!
-
I was in scouts but I forget. What's the point of scouts?
-
I also would never take my son camping. Might take him fishing 1-2 times, my wife apparently fished with her dad fairly regularly. I would be willing to loan my son to ben ji for some fishing.
-

That definitely has something to do with it. I heard they actually reversed the policy, but they haven't done a good job promoting that fact (if it's true).
-
My son asked to be in cub scouts because he said he wanted to "shoot BB guns and bow and arrows." I tried to explain that this was only a limited part of it, but he likes it so far.
Regarding the gay stuff, they have reversed it, but I haven't heard the kids ever talk about it.
-

People who don't have kids don't understand that this is a real thing.
KK isn't like this, but it's shocking how many men just assume their kids will both like sports and be good at them.
I am just glad my kids are growing up in an age and a community where so many more options are acceptable. When/where I grew up, it was sports or outcast. That's it.
-
Kids who don't play sports aren't outcasts anymore?
-
like what else pete? (actually curious)

That's good to hear, I assumed sports was still king.
-
Kids who don't play sports aren't outcasts anymore?
Not in the same way they used to be. Several factors at work.
Larger schools. Not everyone can "make the team." Also, the groups of kids who do other things (theater, band, debate, forensics, scouts, video games, whatever) are much larger, so the herd protects them.
More diverse populations. I grew up in North Topeka. Our idea of diversity was whether you were Protestant or Catholic. Zero other colors or languages. This forces acceptance of differences much earlier in life.
Better educated parents. Where I grew up, the majority of parents did not have college degrees. Now, parents are more savvy, and can better understand that one should not have the goal of their life peaking at the high school homecoming parade, if you want improve your opportunities in life.
Geek cultural revolution. Never before in modern history has "smart geek" been celebrated as they are in current times. From "Big Bang theory," to Silicon Valley dot.com wealth anecdotes, geeks "win" now.

Sports are still big, but not necessary nor sufficient. "Dumb jocks," who aren't good enough to go D1, are future laborers, and are increasingly regarded this way.

Actually, sports are even more king now but the Alpha athlete is now playing one or two sports only on club teams by the time they are 8 or 9 instead of dominating at the rec league of the season and building that rep.

One of my friends who would benefit greatly by moving to JoCo somewhere is avoiding it because he is afraid that when his son gets to HS he won't be good enough to make the football/baseball/basketball team or whatever. Like he doesn't want his kid to be playing one sport all damn year, just maybe two or three more casually. And he wants him to make every team. So he lives in Oak Grove or some bullshit like that. The kid is 1.5 years old BTW.

exurban/redneck towns like Oak Grove usually have the awesomest baseball teams since any dad with a full time job can afford to put up a cage in the back yard - the serious ones put it in a morton building
