Title: winter clothing
Post by: Dr Rick Daris on December 16, 2015, 11:15:19 AM
I think I've decided on pretty much fulltime hoodie and light jackets with t-shirts under them and basically no other types of winter type shirts. the other options are just stupid/make no sense. thoughts?

I'm pretty much exclusively hoodie during the weekend. I do not like wearing coats.

cause it's basically like, why wear something really heavy if it doesn't have a hood and why wear something lighter unless it has a full zipper and the ability to take it off and wear what's underneath. I mean I'm open to hearing arguments but it seems like the upper body winter clothing industry has been bamboozling humans for years with multiple varieties of inferior products.

yeah. I mean, a winter coat? well if you live in Alaska and work outdoors for a living then yeah I guess. but from your house to a parking lot and then inside to some building. I mean come on with that. give me a break.

what does your boss wear in the winter?

I kind of have a work uniform so the hoodies and jackets are just apparel I wear from my car into work and then back out into my car. also at night and on weekends though. long sleeve cotton shirts? it's like, why? shirts with buttons? I mean why not just have a bunch of tiny padlocks. it makes no sense. is the garment industry secretly in bed w/ big button?

whats so hard about putting on a coat and hat?

hat? what is this 1945 new York? I don't think so. and a coat? I mean I'm not going outside to have a snowball fight or attack some black diamonds for the next six hours. not sure why I'd bother with all that hullabaloo.

Post by: Cartierfor3 on December 16, 2015, 11:31:52 AM
The only times in my adult life I have worn a winter hat is if I'm going to be outside for a long period of time, like a football game or sledding with the kids or whatever. And it has to be below 20. I still can't get over people that wear stocking hats inside.

I got this jacket a few years ago:

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.polyvore.com%2Fcgi%2Fimg-thing%3F.out%3Djpg%26amp%3Bsize%3Dl%26amp%3Btid%3D78666130&hash=42bb90d0157a5aef1dee1a2fb42ffc857ae8763f)

Its thin and canvas. Perfect for midwestern living. I don't own a waterproof winter coat and will never need one. When this one wears out I'll get one of similar weight and thickness. If its really cold I just layer a cardigan underneath.

Replace hoodie with a 1/4 zip pullover and I'm on board Daris.  Add a beanie and light pair of gloves when colder.  No need for a big coat unless super cold and outside for quite awhile.

I guess define "winter" or whatever.  For getting from your car inside and vice versa I just use a vest.  For shoveling the driveway or being out there a long time I'll use some sort of down jacket or windstopper shell, depending on activity and base layer.

One of Fedor Jr.'s friends was leaving his house wearing basketball shorts and his parents said that it was cold outside and he should wear something more appropriate.  He went in his room and came back out wearing basketball shorts again.  His mom asked him why he did not change.  He said "Mom, I did! I put on two pairs of shorts!!"

I walk a few blocks to and from my bus stop every and things can get pretty cold.  I wear this coat:
(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.andrewmarc.com%2Fmedia%2Fcatalog%2Fproduct%2Fcache%2F1%2Fimage%2F2500x%2F17f82f742ffe127f42dca9de82fb58b1%2FM%2FM%2FMM5AC137-BLK-1_F_4.jpg&hash=1bc5c859a6220411c8d0594b7668342ca5515f94)

And a hat, scarf, gloves and ll bean boots i got about 6 or 7 years ago (which have held up remarkably well, save for the shoelaces).  I'll throw on another zip up hoodie underneath my coat if i think it's gonna be super cold.  I really hate being cold.  I also hate wearing the hat because it wrecks my pristine head of hair, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

hate the cold but love coats/winter clothing.  guess it just feels great kicking winter's ass no matter the weather
i have a coat for just about every degree of temperature and a plethora of winter caps in varying styles
boots?  several different pair.  actually have the same pair in brown and black.  2-3 scarfs, can't even count them all

of course, my walkability index is off the charts
people who live in barns and farms (is that the same thing?) just drive their 3/4 ton pick up whenever they need to head into the co-op so they don't need cold winter wear

whenever i see someone wearing a hoodie in the wintertime i feel sorry b/c poor

light jackets are the best. i can deal with being cold for 30 seconds twice a day. what i cant deal with is a huge jacket and gloves and crap i have to put on and take off in the car cuz im super sweaty.

if i know my environment will be cold enough to handle it, i use a pullover, because of the luxurious full kangaroo pocket.  if i think i may be shuttling between cool and warm environments, i sacrifice on pockets in favor of the adaptability of the zip up.

Guys there is also the variable of precip to consider.  I like something with a DWR finish if it's just from car to inside, but anything more it's gotta be Goretex or eVent or something like that.  Waterproof+breathable.  Also remember synthetic insulations are probably better with precip.  Yes hydrophobic down is a thing now but 1) 'spensive and 2) you guys don't need the weight savings, because OMG just look at wacky and that salad!

I wear a hoodie almost anytime I need a jacket except for work days and events.  I like zipper hoodies, pullovers, 1/4 zip, etc.  I carry lots of hats and gloves, and scarves, and jackets and long sleeved tees in my car.  Then I'm covered if the weather changes or my circumstances change, and others who might be traveling with me are covered in the event it becomes necessary.
Different styles for different events and situations.  And always a hat and hoodie if I'm going to be outside for a football game or other extended time.

Quarter zip pullover or zip up hoodie for 99% of winter. Only mess around with bulky coats if the temp drops into the single digits or if I'm outside for an extended period of time (shoveling snow, etc).

Non-zip hoodies :Yuck:

only wear the neck "up" if I'm kind of cold and the inside is fuzzy/comfortable.

parked my car in the garage last night for the first time this year/fall/winter. really felt like I didn't even need the jacket this morning but it will be a little cool on the way back to the car after work so I guess it will come in handy then.

Ya cotton sucks but maybe mix in some merino.  I like poly for base layers in hot weather but for cold I likes me some wool.
