Title: Anyone watching The Pacific on HBO?
Post by: hillwalking03 on April 29, 2010, 04:23:01 PM
Totally different than Band of Brothers, however I think its better.  I never expected it to be as intense as it has been.  If you saw episode 7, I've read episode 9 on Okinawa is the most disturbing of the series.

I haven't been watching but intend on buying the DVD set when it comes out.  In my effort to rid my diet of sodium, I mistakenly canceled my HBO subscription. It's weird too because I was waiting years for The Pacific to finally be shown.  Hope the DVD set is released late summer.

I am not fully caught up(still have the last two that I need to watch), but I have been watching it.

I like it, but not as much as B.O.B.

The Pacific's characters are not as easy to get to know as they were in B.O.B.  I may just not be far enough along in watching it though.

great show.

i actually had a dream last night i was in this show. japs everywhere, charged some crazy bunker machine gun nest. the only odd thing about the dream is that i was armed with a miniture mini-gun. killed lots of japs.

Excellent show but I'd have to agree that B.O.B was better.  The violence is certainly more graphic in this one but the characters are less interesting/likable.

How many episodes have there been so far?

7 episodes so far.

Not as good as Band of Brothers (all time favorite piece of cinema), but still good.  They need like 15 episodes to cram all this story in though, it moves a bit fast.

I think I got my expectations up too high unfortunately, and have been let down just a little.

Band of Brothers was better

Probably because Stephen Ambrose was making crap up

Meh, they have made some crap up in The Pacific as well.  That chick Leckey was banging in episode 3 didn't exist in his book.

I like this better than BOB because I think it has taken the intensity up a notch.  Its tough to get to know characters when people are constantly dieing, but to each his own.  I also wonder how many people like BOB because you've had chances to watch it over and over, where as the Pacific is in its initial run.  I watch each episode atleast twice and can identify the characters better than the first go round.

Also, it has to cram 4 years into 10 episodes, where Easy Company's arc was only 11 months, so I agree with the poster who said it needs more like 15 episodes.

Still, what a great mini-series.

This could very well be, and I have wondered that myself.  I agree that the Pacific is much more intense in its battle sequences, and I like that.  The problem I have is it just doesn't make you care about most of the characters.  The are only a handful of characters that you truly know - Sledge, Leckey, Basilone, Snafu, etc.  When their friends are getting killed it doesn't make as much of an impact because I don't know them well.

BOB did a good job of this, I felt like I knew so many people.

I also think the sound production was better in BOB.

Guy was one of the top 5 American war heroes of all time.  He deserved to have his story told again.

Don't even pretend you can quantify something so stupid.

Hemmy, were you expecting them to change the "story" and have him live or something?

i think hemmy (hemmingway?!?) is commenting on the futility of war, and on the tragic loss of the flower of america's youth in two 20th century foreign wars.

Hemmy, watch some of the background and behind the scenes stuff in which it's explained that the Pacific theatre rarely gets the attention it deserves and that the Pacific sets out to do this. I had never heard of John Basilone before this series and now I have.  I'm glad I do.  I thought the bullshit with the girl and all the crap with the french toast could have been avoided but I think Basilone deserved it.

I know full well about the history of Basilone.  I am not saying he wasn't a hero or that his story didn't need to be told, I am simply saying that trying to have 3 main characters in this mini series ended up being stupid.  His story still could have been told, while keeping most of the focus on Leckey and now Sledge.

I was "expecting" as Pete says that it (the Basilone story line) was going to be well done, and not way too much story crammed into limited air time.
