CNS, have you seen the original? Are you into absurdist humor? Because if not, I can see why you would think the first episode was terrible.

Have watched all eight episodes, loved every second of it. The knife fight might be the best scene in television (?) history.

I love abstract humor, but WHAS is just so up and down.  It's either brilliant, or it's awful.  There's no in between.

Episode 1 was okay.  I'll keep going.

I've watched the first two epis and i love it.  I smile the entire time i watch it.  David Wain does great, great work.

I'd been watching a ton of The State skits over the last week to get ready for it.

Guys sorry for fanningbragging but they had a premiere in Brooklyn and I went and it was incredible. David Wain handed me a Rice Krispie treat. I didn't even know what to say so I was just like thank you David Wain.

Episode 1 was okay.

Intentional irony.

I meant the individual scenes.  The sum total was okay.  Some of it was amazing, some of it was boring.  Evened out.

Honestly stunned this question keeps getting asked. Yes, people, watch the movie first. At least 50% of the jokes in the TV show are self-referential nods (or winks) to jokes from the movie.

FWIW, I thought things really picked up after the first 3.

But I've seen the movie a billion times and listened to the director's commentary and even the soundtrack with extra farts, so I'm biased.

Also, this show has a real Arrested Development type of feel when you consider the rewards of new jokes you discover upon repeated viewings. However it is different from AD in that the netflix reboot makes me happy instead of sad.

I had given it a once over about 2 years ago.  My knowledge was not intimate, but I didn't feel that the lacking diminished my enjoyment.   Paul Ruud's sweet 'cycle entrance in ep1 told me all I needed to know.

I had not seen the movie and absolutely loved the tv show. I ended up watching every episode this last weekend while Mrs. Yard Dog was out of town. I'll be giving the movie a shot this weekend then try to convince the lady to watch the show with me so I can see any of the callbacks I missed.

I watched the show once and then again with the wife.  Wain's work is kind of its own genre for me.  Anything remotely like it is done so much worse, it hardly counts.

It's very very good most of the time but even within Wain's catalog, WH is so good that it is leagues above the other stuff iyam. Although Wanderlust was serviceable and The Ten was very good in its own right.

See I thought Wanderlust was really really bad.  I liked Role Models much more.

But this Wet Hot series might be my favorite thing he's ever done (Stella included).  There are a million dynamite lines.

I've had "champagne eyes" stuck in my head all night.

seriously though, do yourself a favor and try to find a way to watch the stella show from comedy central.  There's only 8 or 10 episodes i think, but they're all that great, clever Wain absurdity.  Plus MIB and Show.  A few people from the State and Wet Hot make cameos too.

I enjoyed Wanderlust.  And Role Models was great, too. I honestly didn't know who this Wain guy was, but after reading this thread and thinking about it in the shower, I pretty much Matlock'd that he must have done Role Models, too, before it was mentioned ITT. I think I love his style.

Confirmed. He's great. Apparently he did a send-up of rom coms recently called They Came Together that was a commercial flop. Stars Paul Rudd and Amy Poeheohler. Watched the first ten minutes last night and had a lot of that same over-the-top absurdity. Will watch the rest and report back. It's on Netflix streaming and Chris Meloni speaks very highly of it.

There are 10 episodes and they are all goddamned treasures. They can be yours forever for $16: http://www.amazon.com/Stella-Season-Michael-Ian-Black/dp/B000FZETJS (http://www.amazon.com/Stella-Season-Michael-Ian-Black/dp/B000FZETJS)

20 minutes in. Love Paul Ruud's wardrobe choices.  I mean, he's no that fat guy who plays that gay guy on that one sitcom, but I appreciate that he's a serial KU rep'r on the big screen.

I loved the board meeting scene where MIB gets denied the big account and the corner office and eventually gets canned and the boss is like "you're gonna lose your license" and MIB is like "huh?  License?  I'm not licensed..."  And then the boss is like "NOW GET OUT OF HERE BEFORE I CHANGE MY MIND!" and black is like "well,  I WANT you to change your mind, you just fired me!"

They're just so good at tossing in cliches that don't make any sense and then just obliterating it with like a scintilla of common sense.

and to think, everything happened in under 24 hours!

really loved the "15 years younger joke" at the very end.

What's really weird is I had no idea this was about to drop. Like I guess it wasn't a sneak attack or anything, but somehow I just had not heard at all that it was coming soon. Knew they were kicking around the idea of it but somehow it just evaded my consciousness.

Didn't wanna dive in tonight because it snuck up on me and I wasn't in the right place timing-wise. Gonna dedicate the entirety of tomorrow to watching the entire prequel, movie, and then hopefully the new season. Will probably be a weekend endeavor, though. Can't wait to hear wacky's piping hot takes on how much it sucks even though he's never seen the movie and watched like 2 1/2 episodes of the part that was set 10 years earlier than this new one.
