I know @Pissclams has a trap thread on this, but I want a serious one. I've been spending a lot of time watching stand up lately and I'm really falling in love with a few characters. Here's my current top 3.
1. Louis CK- He's amazing and blowing up. I also love his show. Anything new that comes out with him, I have to watch. His SNL a few weeks back was hilarious.
2. Aziz- Hilarious! I like it when he makes fun of guys for sending dick pics. He's a winner!
3. Kevin hart- Yes, he's mainstream, but man, he's funny.
-
Aziz is -B to B material. His Madison Square Garden was blahhhhh

This is true, but his two shows before that were $$$$$$$!
-
Louis CK is my favorite, by far.
I also really like Jerry Seinfeld and Lewis Black.
-
Kevin Hart, Aries Spears, Jo Koy are pretty hilarious
-
Gabriel Iglesias is probably my favorite
Steve Harvey is also pretty funny too
-
Those Blue Collar guys! I mean so funny! Best pals touring together and having fun!
-
Louis CK is blowing up?

I mean, more than he already was. I mean, he's like a super star now. Before, he was just a star.
-
For some reason I got into random women comics like Nikki Glaser, Schumer, and Chelsea Peretti.
-
hedburg
lincoln
-
I like Amy Schumer but the last couple episodes of her show were kind of meh.
-
like right now?
if so hannibal buress has to be mentioned, he is hilarious. also bill burr will always be a favorite and john mulaney sucks as an actor but his stand up is really rough ridin' funny
-

Back in January, I saw Louis CK at the Chicago Theater, with Hannibal Burress as the first opener, and Steven Wright as the second. It was a fantastic show.
-
I like going to Bay Area standup open mikes. I've enjoyed most of them more than any comedy show I've paid for.

Obviously randomly selected from the current top 3 most popular female comics.
-
so here's why I like open mic's more:
1) Most of the performers are working comics or people who are trying to be working comics.
2) Open mics are an opportunity for them to try out new jokes, which means they often push boundaries - you see stuff that is more racist, crude, and "edgy", if you will, because they want to see how people react. This is often extra funny. When it's not....
3) people bomb. I like watching people bomb because it's a very real, human experience. If you're paying to see someone they'll generally play it safe.
Finally
4) you do get some really really bad people which isn't as bad as you think because it only takes like 5 minutes.

This is a great recap. I've told several ppl on here, that one of my roommates in college does stand up. I'll give it to him, he tries really hard, but nothing really bites with the audience. When I was dating filly, she boo'd him and heckled him on stage, and I went off on her. That's when I knew she was a bad person IRL.
-
She booed an open mic? :sdeek:
-
Jim Jeffries - Bare
i cannot watch jim jeffries if mrs mocat is around
-
Patrice O'Neal. One of the best comedians of all time. Died way too young.
-
I love bill burr and gaffigan, my favorite is still robin williams live on broadway. kevin hart sucks taints and balls
-
i just like to laugh, so whoever can do that at the time is probably my favorite comedian
-
Jim Jeffries - Bare
Bo Burnham - What.
John Mulaney - New In Town
when I go running I listen to standup instead of music. These three are always on my MP3. Makes a long run much more enjoyable.

Not just directed to you, but do people listen to stand up over and over? Seems kind of odd, but I suppose I listen to songs often multiple times and still enjoy it so I don't know... :dunno:
-
I listen to some of the same stuff over a few times. I reload the MP3 every so often. But some comedians keep me laughing no matter how many times I hear the material. Part of it is just the delivery.
-
kevin hart sucks taints and balls
Obviously you've never seen Katt Williams.
-
Katt Williams sucks dog crap
-
The RIP Club:
Richard Pryor - duh, a legend
George Carlin - same
Mitch Hedberg - great one liners and wordplay
Robin Williams - his stage stuff I'm ok with, but he brought so much life to characters in movies
Great Story Tellers
Gabriel Iglesias - simply one of the best, great sound effects, great delivery
Dane Cook - a douche sure, but a great story teller nonetheless, esp his older stuff
The New Age
Aziz Ansari - I like his older stuff, now I don't as much
John Oliver - Maybe not stand up, but I love "Last Week Tonight"
Current Greats
Louis CK - I should watch him more than I do
Tina Fey - Also not really stand up, but her in 30 Rock, Mean Girls, SNL, wherever, she can really make me laugh
-
I enjoy Dave Chappelle's stand up. Especially the '97 San Fran act.
-
Dave Chappelle stand up is A++++
I saw Louie CK and Bill Burr up here.
Louie is great live. He just takes stuff way too far and weird for people. I find it super hilarious and was laughing when everyone else was like "welp, this just went too far for me"
Bill Burr killed it. Did a whole week of shows(14 total I think :sdeek:). Just laughed my taint off.
-
Reggie Watts
-
Yeah, watch Louis's stand up on SNL a few weeks back. He was making jokes about child rape and somehow it was funny. You would have to see it to understand it.
-
Kyle Kinane, you guys. Kyle Kinane.
-
Doug Benson show was very meh.
-
Colin Quinn has a pretty great netflix special about the constitution up right now (maybe should go in the pit)
-
Going to see Dave Chappelle next month. OH MAN
-
Chris D'Elia
Most of the people I know don't really like him, but I think he's rough ridin' hilarious for some reason.

-
Not really standup, per se, but I was supposed to go to the Comedy Bang Bang live show on Saturday, but couldn't.
Anyhow, CBB is really the only comedy I've listened to for a long time.

3) people bomb. I like watching people bomb because it's a very real, human experience. If you're paying to see someone they'll generally play it safe.

Anyone else going to Louie CK tonight?

I open Vine about once a month and laugh like I'm Stevesie for as long as I want. So many talented and ridiculous 19 year olds out there.

Nonsense. Chappelle spits hot fire ever-y single time.

I hear he's still complaining about getting cancelled on his Netflix special?
-
I love how he's just openly lol'ing about people trying to cancel him. He gives zero effs.
-
I hear he's still complaining about getting cancelled on his Netflix special?
That's what I heard also lol
-
i'm halfway through it, he doesn't complain about getting canceled, he just makes jokes about some of the feedback he gets
-
I don't recall any complaining about being canceled.
-
Are some of you chuds really throwing shade at Chappelle? Please identify yourselves so I can cancel your asses in my mind's eye.
-
I think he’s my favorite person on this earth.
-

it sounds like he had more homophobic material on this special and I don't feel the need to watch it to verify whether or not what I heard was accurate
-
Just my opinion, but you're falling for manufactured outrage. As a progressive person who loves dave, my news feed algo has been chock full of all the outrage articles and I deliberately haven't read any of them, but the headlines are all dax level manipulations.
This special did have some jokes that felt intentionally mean to make a point of pissing off the people who already hate him. It definitely worked. He also has a very emotional story about a trans comic friend of his who killed herself that you could tell really had an impact on him.

He's very good but his transgender stuff is not. It's just like he's pandering to people who want him to do trans content. Which probably got a lot of magas talking about the special and ran up its numbers.

Mich, honest question, do you think of yourself as trans and if not, why are you trying to defend a community you know nothing about?!
-
He artistically said his peace on real life experiences he’s had from a community he helps out and you want to give up on him because NYT’s said he was offensive, on a comedy show.
-
He’s the most brilliant comedian out there. If you can’t laugh at his jokes, it might be on you.

Chappelle’s stand up is probably close to #1 overall right now, but he said some crap about the trans community, & gave them more $ who try to judge him here. It’s mumped up and delicious at the same time! Thanks, Dave! You’re rough ridin' hilarious!

Not that funny. Play the old kanye

yla and wacky, don't okay. Rusty doesn't need me or anyone else to defend him but as usual, y'all are going overboard,
As for the special, I loved it and I'm glad I watched it. I didn't watch his previous two full length specials, I did watch the George Floyd one, because of the backlash. I'm going to go back and watch those but I'm guessing the previous backlash was merited because he wasn't as introspective as he was with this special. BTW, I did find the trans stuff funny, when he was going for the funny. I do think the trans and gay jokes don't hit the way the black & white jokes do because we're all uncomfortable when he tells them, just as we would be of a white person told the same race jokes as he does.
But here's some rationale for why it's kind of offensive (that I didn't necessarily pick up on watching straight through)

Did I hear a different stand up than this woman did? The entire point of the story of his comedian friend was that she demanded that Dave take her seriously. Did Raquel miss that part of the story Dave told?
Also that story is no where close to the same thing as the "my black friend" trope. The my black friend thing is mocked because having a black friend is used as a stand in for speaking to and about black people about black experiences. Dave was speaking about conversations and experiences with Daphne that informed some of his thoughts and feelings. He didn't use Daphne as a superficial device to ignore or deflect.
Also I went back and listened twice and he did not say that the trans people on twitter led to Daphne's demise, he said it didn't help, which, duh. Yes, he did say twitter wasn't real place, he was speaking about himself. That doesn't mean everyone feels that way, again, duh.
There was nothing outside of an outright apology and no jokes that would have satisfied Raquel and that's fine, I think I get why. Reasonable people can disagree.
-
He didn't explicitly say trans Twitter led to Daphne's suicide but it was definitely the last thing he mentioned before revealing that she killed herself.
Also sorry for triggering wacky and yla. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings!

Sorry, I just don’t need a headline or someone’s Twitter feed to tell me to feel enraged.

No, but he did like 4-5 specials for them in the span of 2-3 years. That’s gotta be tough as hell coming up with new material that infuriates all things that are donkey brained.

Mich was offended before going into it, letting fake news dictate his feelings. That’s the only reason we were having a good chuckle, because we’re mich fans. Was this his best stand up? No. Just another 40 point performance from Jordan, before his flu game. DC is amaze!

I watched it start to finish! I wasn't personally offended! That said, I can understand how someone with a different perspective might think otherwise. I also think it wasn't very funny!

This is the last special of his Netflix contract. For me it read more like him wanting to put a fancy bow on everything, get everything out there and tie everything up.
I am sure the trans stuff has been a big part of his life the last ten years. People telling him they like it and a lot of people telling him they hate it. People that hated that content will not like this special. People that loved that content will find enough to like it. People who just likes jokes and comedy will be like, Dave is so ridiculously good at what he does and this special was just decent (for Dave). Decent Dave is better than 80-90% of comedy specials though.

That makes sense, but I don't think it was necessary for him to "wrap up" the trans stuff. Was anyone like "man I wish Dave would talk about punching down and trans issues one more time" (other than wacks)
I also didn't think there was enough of the great moments he's capable of to consider it "decent" but I can see how people could.

Yeah. His Netflix contract that just ended has been his whole life for five years though and he’s been required to come up with new material and put a show together because of the contract. Like a musician that’s forced to put out a new album every year whether they love the new songs or not. It’s a job.
I just feel like he’s done for a while now though and wanted to address some crap and get some things off his chest. Like, the show wasn’t because michigancat or anyone else wanted him to address that crap and do a bunch of trans comedy, but more because Dave the person wanted to. He isn’t coming out with anything new for a long long time. It will tie up that part of his life (Netflix contract and trans stuff) and when he wants to come out with new stuff if he ever does, it can be a new chapter or new book or new sound or whatever.
-
Yeah I suppose it was easier to just rehash old content
-
Yeah I suppose it was easier to just rehash old content
100% and for him (at least how I took it) it served to finish with that part of his life and content or whatever. Like if Jk Rowling finally wrote the last potter book. Quite a few loose ends to tie up and give your final thoughts on. Think of his Netflix specials as a trilogy or something and that was the final installment.
-
Rusty wanting and actively searching for reasons to get wound up about Chappelle is pretty hilarious tho, you gotta admit.

I enjoyed the joke about the lesbian/trans/gay (not sure which) being a fellow oppressee, until it’s time to get the cops called then the “being white” comes out.
Bill Burr has a similar joke about women and equality, until there is a fire and someone (not a man) is getting rescued first.
Not to derail, but Burr’s joke equating a First Lady to a plumber’s wife/husband is about as good as it gets.

He's very good but his transgender stuff is not. It's just like he's pandering to people who want him to do trans content. Which probably got a lot of magas talking about the special and ran up its numbers.
This is where I am. He's right that calling what he's done, punching down is insulting. What he has done that's a problem is he's using his platform as a bully pulpit. Our society will never allow a trans comedian to have the platform he does and if they did they can't make jokes about his lips the way he talks about dicks & pussies.
The point he made during this special he could have made two specials ago and just left it alone at that. He knows he's hurting people with those jokes but he kept doing them to make a point and IMO, that's mumped up.

Did the author give any examples of what would qualify as a "fresh" and, therefore, acceptable trans joke?
No, the author isn't a comedian, but they did share an editorial from a trans comic and also shares the perspective of a few. If you're genuinely interested, it isn't hard to find.
-
Again, if you're genuinely interested, I thought the first 10 minutes of this were very funny and more interesting than anything Chappelle did except maybe "tenderizing titties". (Don't expect Chappelle delivery though)

I don't know what that attention whoring cac did, the tweet has been deleted. However, you're speaking about protesters and counter-protesters. Pro life and pro choice, death penalty proponents and opponents, etc. If there was a counter-protester, the counter wouldn't be "I like Dave." The protest was about how Netflix handled the special internally and Netflix pushing perceived transphobia. Was that eff face protesting for the Netflix CEO or the necessity for transphobia to exist in poplar culture? I'm guessing he was trolling for attention.
Did he get beat up? If so, play stupid games...

Wacky, i'm not sure you're fully understanding what is happening there at Netflix, but good news I have an analogy that I think all gE.c combofan denizens can follow along pretty easy, imagine if you will:
CNS and Spracne open up their school cafeteria lunch restaurant. They hire Stupid Fitz and Pete to cut the grass. Over time Pete and SF start to notice some hostility toward their choice to use riding lawn mowers, it would seem that CNS and Spracne seem to be in lockstep with the agenda of Big Pushmower, and while Pete and SF have not been threatened that they'll be fired if they don't use the push mowers, they do feel excluded, isolated, and as if they are being treated unfairly because of their pro-riding mower proclivities, so they protest by walking (well, riding, but the blade isn't spinning) off the job and demanding that CNS and Spracne allow them to cut the grass using riding mowers instead of push mowers.
Ok so Wacky what you're doing here is showing up to Pete and SF's protest with a sign that says "I LIKE CRISPITOS!"
(just to be clear, Pete and SF did NOT demand that crispitos be taken off the menu)

Anyone taking in a stop on the Chappelle tour? He said they were at the venue without their phones for 9 hours.

I am not going to watch that, but what on earth could his defense possibly be (assuming the text of the tweet is accurate)
-
I'm mildly curious, but not curious enough to read about it. Yellow Springs isn't like some super expensive place to live. So, maybe "affordable housing" here means something more like low income housing. And he's opposed to that for the usual NIMBY reasons.
-
I think that’s always what “affordable housing” means when it’s used by cities.
-
The twitter thread explains it, the video is only like 30 seconds long btw, but the affordable housing might very well be a front, but no, it's not like they're building section 8 housing, just a few duplexes among $300,000 homes. Yes, he's NIMBYing this but he did it by literally saying he'd pull his business if they didn't honor his wishes, he literally said that in the clip. He also referenced talking to a one of the councilpersons off the record about this.
Pretty gross capitalistic behavior that "the old Dave" would have definitely stood against. Same person who turned his back on $50 million on principal.
-
YS is a little lefty hipster paradise. Houses start around $300K. These is no affordable housing in the town.

https://twitter.com/toure/status/1492287395999502339?s=21
Well MIR’s tweet said the plan was approved, just without the affordable housing component. Which means that if this tweet is true then Chappelle will be pulling his money unless I’m misreading something. Which I suspect will not happen since this Toure fellow seems to be using a lot of spin here, especially by comparing the price of the new homes in a small “college town vibe” place to the “typical” home in ALL OF OHIO.
-
https://twitter.com/toure/status/1492287395999502339?s=21
Well, he's wrong. He was probably wrong whatever his first opinion was when he was just reading tweets and he's wrong with whatever his opinion has pivoted to. The houses are still being built, just not the duplexes.
His response is to the sentiment of "Chappelle blocked affordable housing," not the actual facts of what he did and the effect of his actions. The twitter thread I posted was and is accurate.

I learned awhile ago that hoping famous and powerful people will be good is usually a bad idea and also that it is ok to not tie up your own identity in a famous or powerful person. They can be accountable for their own choices and you can mostly assume they are at least as greedy and selfish as most regular people just with a lot more temptation and that they will mostly fail at being good people.
It has become deeply weird and alienating to me to see people desperate to defend people that don’t care about them at all and don’t actually represent them or their interests at all. Why are you putting in the work for them?
-

In fairness, the general public (at least in America) has a rich history of acting against its’ own self interests. It’s kind of our “brand”
-
I defend people I really enjoy. Most people who like to lecture others on what’s right and wrong have done shitty things themselves, so I do what I want! He’s done way more for that community than anybody else in that town, but sure, let’s berate him for this.

im not sure what’s more disappointing, what he did or how he did it. for someone who came from where he did?throwing around his money is such bitch move. old dude needs to be slapped.

The more perfect the artist, the more completely separate in him will be the man who suffers and the mind which creates.

That's the thing, wacky. You can still enjoy him and not have to bend over backwards to defend anything. Also if your standard of being able to point out when someone fucks up is that they couldn't have mumped anything up themselves, that means literally one one in the world can have their mistakes pointed out, held accountable, or have hypocrisy called out.
Chappelle used his money and power to influence a government body, there isn't a circumstance where this is okay, it's indefensible. It's even less defensible when he spent a decade being a comedian that relied on morality. If anything his hypocrisy should bother you, not the people pointing it out.
Chappelle shouldn't be using money to influence governments, he's still a generational comedic genius.
Phil Spector is a murderer, likely rotting in hell. He still may be the best music producer of all time
Derrick Thomas should have called a cab, he was also one of the best linebackers we've ever seen.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at, which is similar to what KK was saying. Don't invest a piece of your heart in the belief that celebrities/athletes you enjoy watching are also good people, separate and apart from their craft. More importantly, don't let your kids do that, if possible.

The roulette aspect of not knowing what you’re gonna get drives me more to live stuff (which I rarely go to), but I’m not gonna overspend or bust my ass to get there. I’d just as soon grab some cheap tickets to a local show.

Regarding the roulette aspect, I saw him in Austin like 7-8(?) years ago, and it ended up being one of the shows that got put in Netflix. "Deep in the Heart of Texas," I believe. He did the phone thing back then, too.

london is the easy choice for anyone who loves tea parties as much as I presume chris rock and dave chappelle love tea parties

lol, nobody has any animus for Chris Rock, he's Kevin Hart before Kevin Hart.
-
that’s a disgusting comparison. rock could read me the back of the box rice krispie treat recipe and i’d laugh, hart is just annoying, but probably maybe different audiences idk
-
Hart was way funnier (not than Rock) like 5 years ago before all his infidelity got aired out. His comeback tour isn’t as fun.

i feel the same way

Rock was great, but I think there’s a case for Hart before he sold out too. He had some really funny stand ups. To each their own.

nononononononono I meant just as far as a threat someone wanting to rush the stage on him, I think Chris Rock is great as a stand up comedian, it's why the gi jane joke was disappointing. I've never seen a kevin hart stand up

I went to the Comedy Cellar tonight and the lineup was Colin Quinn, Judd Apatow, Mike Birbiglia, and Ray Romano. Birbiglia was the best IMO!

Birbiglia is on my list to see when I get a chance - a pretty cool line up all around too.

Oh man. that is great. I've been there several times hoping for a big time drop in and never had one. Romano, Chapelle, etc have been know to just pop in but i've never been lucky. I've seen Colin Quinn there though. He is a sweatheart. I bet Birbiglia was great.
-
i don't really like Mike Berbiglia. I watched one of his "standups" once and it felt more like a one man show that had some jokes interlaced throughout, but didn't think they were very funny.
He also had a famously bad appearance on comedy bang bang that probably prejudiced me against him a little bit.

He's a storyteller as much as a comedian. He does a lot with This American Life which I feel like is a better fit for him than CBB.

Did the author give any examples of what would qualify as a "fresh" and, therefore, acceptable trans joke?
This is good pronoun comedy

Andrew Santino just had a special come out on Netflix and it's pretty damn great! For those who don't know who he is, he's the red head on "Dave". He's been in a bunch of other stuff too.
-
Just saw Matteo Lane in person. One of the funniest shows and best times ever.
-
At least people don't seem to be complaining about how drunk Dave was, progress!
I don't love any performer enough to go though this crap to watch them.

New chris rock is incredibly not funny. turned it off when he said America's worst addiction is not to opiods, but actually to receiving attention
-
i fell asleep during it this afternoon
-
Rock has always had great jokes but I have always cringed at his method of delivery. I am not a fan of the repeating things three times in various inflections or types of voice. It has always seemed like a lazy and blunt force way of forcing an audience to accept the baseline premise of what your joke is about to address. His jokes have always made up for that, to me, though. I watched half of the new one last night and most of the time he just sounds like a boomer. Maybe that’s not fair. Maybe he just sounds like he is trying to talk to too wide of an audience. For example, he says some boomer stuff, then massages it to sound like a boomers approach but with an open mind. It’s not bad. But it’s not good so far. It makes me wonder if we are all too far apart now to have comedians that are widely enjoyed across the culture. I am not looking to be offended or for comedians to offend others, but spreading too far seems to equate to talking to no one a big part of the time.
Also, so far it seems like he is teasing up to the thing that will actually make his money in this one. Saving that for the end.
-
New chris rock is incredibly not funny. turned it off when he said America's worst addiction is not to opiods, but actually to receiving attention
It got significantly better after that. The first 20 minutes or so was incredibly unfunny and cringy. Comedians whining about not being able to do comedy is never the slightest bit funny. Once he got away from that, he was really good. I checked out at this exact point, mocat. I picked up my cell phone and started doing other crap while it was still on. I decided to give it another chance and I just listened to the audio when driving yesterday. The last two bits, dating older women, and Will Smith, were really good. My only gripe on the Will Smith stuff was that he called Jada a bitch, but I don't think he really meant it, I think he was riffing and just spoke too fast. I think that would have been cut if it weren't live.
-
Keep in mind that it's possible you guys have bad senses of humor and cannot correctly decipher what is funny and what isn't. Food for thought?

Yep
James said that she grew up admiring Chappelle's earlier comedic work (such as his own iconic TV comedy series, Chappelle's Show) but now finds his work to be too self-serious.
"I like silly Chappelle," James said. "He's in his wisdom bag now. We're clowns! Once we forget that we're clowns, then it becomes bad. Your objective is to make people laugh and then sneak your thoughts in underneath the jokes. If your thoughts are on top, that's not funny or entertaining to me."

Saw the Bert Kreischer tour last night, pretty funny. He always appears drunk and or stoned, and laughs a lot.
I believe there were 8 comedians in total, some better than others. There was a lot of abortion/trans/pub jokes, which obviously was a little weird in OKC.

House projects and 3 hour podcasts are my current sitch. Usually circle back to them a day or two later when I don't finish if they are interesting enough.

Shorter dude with really long hair. I forgot you were going or I would've looked for you.
All the comedians I've seen before were in pretty large venues like the Midland or Uptown. It's a totally different experience watching someone crush in a smaller room.

Joe Pera is coming to Tulsa at the end of July. We are going.
Yes! I'm going to his special taping in Brooklyn in a couple weeks.
We went last night. It was one of the strangest, funniest things I’ve ever seen. Was his special in Brooklyn an hour?
I don’t know that he did 30 minutes of material last night, but he went for 75 minutes. He did a good 20 minutes on Tulsa, the events of the day & interacting with the crowd. He played in Cain’s Ballroom, which has a BBQ place attached. He came out talking about how he watched another comedian eat BBQ before the show, then they blew up the green room bathroom so he had to pee in the alley. He seemed to genuinely think it was hilarious, but it could be a piece he does in at every show. I have no idea. He just seemed to get knocked off his rhythm by his amusement at what was going on with the bathroom & the crowd work feedback, winged it & had a great time.
