Title: Commuting
Post by: p1k3 on May 17, 2015, 02:14:08 PM
Got a job offer in Topeka that I accepted so I'm gonna be commuting from MHK until my lease is up this summer. After that I'm not sure what I'll do. I want to move to Kansas City where all my friends and family are, but that's like an hour drive each way. Anyone else do this or know anyone who does? Does it suck ass? What are the costs etc? TIA for any input.

used to commute from kc to lawrence and then kc to topeka.  it gets expensive.  i like driving, so that never bothered me, though it sucks when weather is bad. the toll is going to be about $5 a day and gas depends on your your vehicle.  oil changes come up every 6 weeks or so too.

You couldn't pay me enough to actually work in Topeka.

Is there no equivalent job in kc?  If not, and you really like that job, suck it up and find a Topeka address.  Yes, commuting long distance sucks super bad.

Not really. My industry is kind of odd so I'm lucky to get an opportunity in Kansas (I lived in Sys country for a while and was then supposed to move to Indiana but I quit that job). But man...Topeka? I just don't think I can do it.

I lived in Lawrence, drove between Lawrence and downtown/plaza KC for a few years.  It wasn't bad.  I had XM radio and would drink coffee and just chill on the way to work.

Only live there if you can accept your kids playing for elite HS teams that do great things.

True story: in HS, we played Eudora in some basketball tourney.  Our coach was concerned that when we showed up to the game and saw how ridiculous one of their players looked,  that we wouldn't be able to focus on the game at hand.  So, he found a current senior pic of the kid through a teacher friend, and we had a team sit down to get the whole experience out of our system days prior to the game.

Pls, that is a great story.   We took time during practice to laugh at how ugly some poor kid was so that we didn't lose time doing so during the game.  I mean, come on, pretty unique game prep.
