Title: John Oliver on U.S. Territorial Citizenry
Post by: nicname on March 12, 2015, 09:42:41 AM
Never heard much about this until now. Seems absurdly archaic.

You can fight and die for us, but heaven forbid you have a say in who sends you there.

Why would he need to?

Wow.  Such ignorance on my part.

Sign me up on whichever bandwagon is being built to make these places states.

Have you guys been to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands? They're fine. They don't care about all this enfranchisement razzmatazz. If we make them states, it would mess everything up.  Think about the flags, people.

Arcane or archaic?

BOTH! But yes, I may have misused a word there.

The only people that pay federal income taxes either work for the federal government or make money outside the territory. We would be better off cutting them loose.

don't know enough about the others to comment (but assume they're prolly similar), but with respect to pr, i don't see what the issue is.  their status is fair.

hopefully they'll become a state soon.

Didn't PR vote against statehood not too long ago?

I'm sure PR is looking across the pond thinking, "their king is a rough ridin' idiot and an bad person, maybe in a couple years".

yes.  either become states and everything that goes with that or have your own country and everything that goes with that.  having "territories" is very strange now.  i'm sure they are all beneficial in their own way, but i don't care which they choose.  all of them could be one state for all i care.

they've voted against it repeatedly in the past.  they seem to be getting closer to wanting to join.  i think they're supposed to have another vote before too long.

It would be a huge win for the liberal agenda since Puerto Rico has a 59% labor force participation rate, but a huge blow to taxpayers. A major net loss for the U.S. Worse drain on the economy than West Virginia and New Mexico.

I'll bet the flag making companies are lobbying hard for this.  Can you imagine how many flags with 51 stars you could sell?

Puerto Rico had a vote about a year ago, and supported maintaining their current status.  Sure, they get no representation in congress, nor electoral votes, but they also get to miss out on some obligations as well.

In addition, they can always move to the states as citizens.

It appears they are okay with the situation.  So why should I care what John Oliver thinks in this regard?

In addition, on Sotomayor, are we surprised the news media if so mentally handicapped they did not understand she was a citizen as a Puerto Rican?  Are we surprised they are no smarter than Brady Morningstar or the rest of the KU bench?

I guess Oliver is going to do a show that pushes that meth addiction is bad for your health....

Biggest thing I didn't like was the nearest VA for vets was 3k miles away. Not that the VA is that great or anything.

Well if you watched the video you would have seen him discuss the large number of military personnel and the high percentage of people on these islands working on military installations.

that's a military problem, not a territorial problem.

I don't know who John Oliver is or why I should care what he thinks, but he basically decried the Port Authority as the worst place on earth yesterday
