Reincarnation.

I have been an Opera Singer, a Shetland pony, a Cobbler, and an Alpaca  (that was fun) in prior lives.  Obviously loads more, but I can't really remember those very well.

The only thing that we know for certain about the afterlife is that St. Peter does not meet you at the pearly gates because pope-worshiping Catholics all go to Hell.

When I was a kid, thinking about eternal heaven scared the crap out of me. Like, about as much as hell did. I would like get sick to my stomach and couldn't sleep when I really thought about it.

Eternity is just pretty freaky when you expect to be there for all of it. Expecting everything to just shut off is probably more comforting to a lot of people.

I'm an Exxx, so the thought of being alone eternally is very disagreeable to me and I prefer to think I will be with my family and best buds

you decompose and fertilize the ground, which helps plants and grass grow.  deer and cattle and other animals eat the grass that you helped grow.  Someone kills the deer or cattle for food and eats it. this food nourishes them and that helps them live and reproduce and create more people.  then the cycle repeats

The thought of an afterlife is pretty standard in religion and I think very comforting to a majority of people

So heaven is full of fake psychics?  Your son will die at some point in the future.  Of course he will.  Also, saying that doesn't seem very heavenly.  They provide her with bad news she can't use before she leaves?  Your parting gift is torment and increased anxiety.  Enjoy the sense of impending doom, lady.

I don't think she went to heaven.

I'd like to think I would be the first but in reality it looks exhausting so probably chill, show up in photographs, knock stuff off of shelves, cause dogs to bark at me freaking out humans but then tell little kids I am there to watch out for them.

I'd probably scare little squawk babies too, to the point of their family thinking they have major psychological problems and need help to deal.

Wow! I just got really dark you guys.

There was a time when minds weren't filled with other people, quite as heavily, where a person would have sought out answers to all types of questions.

Don't you think now the mind just asks, "What's on my phone?"

it's not really surprising that the religions that have prospered the most (financially, population, etc.) are the ones that have created the most terrible punishments and amazing rewards for their followers. like, heaven and hell are really modern christian beliefs. they didn't really exist in the OT outside of some terrible translations. like, really look at the references to hell and heaven in the bible and what books they originate from. dante painted what people picture as the christian hell more than the bible. dante and the christian leaders preaching fire and brimstone.

I would say that most of what we think about heaven and hell comes from Paradise Lost.

Also, probably belongs in the Sensible muslim thread but the reward of 40 virgins seems like the most extreme reward you can get and look at what dudes are willing to do for that crap.

I think Beems had 40 virgins by the time he graduated high school. I'm sure the number is approaching 72 by now.

Please don't crap on the point that upper level posters sd and lsoc are making that the more drastic the punishment/reward you create in your religion the more rich or in control you can be.

The typical 18 year old suicide bomber will never have a chance to find 72 virgins in the slums of Ramadi

They didn't wear your community condom when they posted.  That is the essence of #1thread.  It's not what is posted, but fear of having it associated with their screen name.  That didn't happen here.
