Title: Iowa State on Tuesday
Post by: A$APCornBall on January 18, 2015, 09:06:21 AM
So...how can we possibly win this one? Maybe sneak Luis Colon into the game and knock Niang out with a haymaker? Just hoping they come in overconfident and we flex our oscar muscles all over Hilton.

When you're #1, you get everyone's best shot every game. Comes with the territory.

I could see Iowa state coming out flat on Tuesday after their monumental (in their minds) win.  If we can capitalize early and build up a decent lead (huge if since we are serially poor starters) we might be able to hang on.

Iowa State is a terrible defensive and rebounding team. I think Naz Long and Monte Morris are in some kind of competition to see who can be the worst defender in cbb history.  The key to stopping them is to limit their transition game (make shots and limit turnovers, two things were terribly inconsistent at).

Iowa State doesn't force turnovers, which bodes well for us. They also don't try to oboard much.

However, they will be tough to match and we'll have to hope to shoot/score with them at a high pace which will be difficult in their building.

I feel like most of our turnovers are not forced, so we should stop being dumb and clean this up.

True. But the fact that Iowa State doesn't steal or force much (and watching them play) implies that they don't exert a ton of ball pressure, which will help us. To be fair, Jevon in the first 10 minutes yesterday was about as bad as I've seen a PG play at K-State, but Baylor's length and pressure are pretty legit.

Jevon completes more passes to the camera man than his own teammates. It was very wtf.

Iowa State doesn't defend with high pressure, something that we seem to struggle with this year. Most young teams, or teams limited amount of ball handlers do. I think it is a chance for our offense to take a step forward.

I am super concerned with our transition D. This is a good matchup for Nigel. You can tell Nigel's dad was a former NFL DB when he makes a break on a ball in a broken floor situation. Wes will also we super important. Hopefully Nino and Gip but a lot of pressure on their bigs on the boards.

Niang is going to be a problem for us, Nino is going to have to be smart and stay out of foul trouble. Malek probably has the best physical tools to guard Georges, be he would get mentally abused.

Hopefully they have a hangover from their big win, struggle shooting. End of the day, their scoring runs could kill us.

If Morris is the best you've got, that would help to explain the #113 overall defensive ranking while giving up nearly 70 ppg.

Pace will be interesting. They want 70 possessions and we want 60. I'm pretty sure our cute little under 65 points on defense streak we'll end, but we could still win. However, it will take a 1.05 or better offensive efficiency to do it and that could be tough.

This will be interesting. In Big 12 play our 3PA/FGA is down to only 20.6% compared to 28.1% for the season. Over his career oscar's teams usually average around 1/3 of the shots from behind the arc. I'm sure part of this is realizing that Foster is the most legit threat, and Marcus is shooting about the same amount of 3s as last year (5.8 attempts per game compared to 6.1 last year). Part of that is also the Cats playing nearly 3 possessions slower per game this year. In any case, until someone else steps up as a legit 3PT threat (which probably won't happen) we'll probably continue to see 3PT attempts down this year. That means we'll have to rely (mainly) on Nino, Gip, Westicles, and Edwards on midrange jumpers or getting to the rim to score besides Foster's shooting.

I am a little worried for our players' safety tonight.  I mean, how many old Iowans are going to rush the floor and challenge our guys to fights after the refs bail us out over and over?  I just don't like the precedent that their fans have set by being thugs after emotional games or the precedent set by Jamie Pollard, not only by siding with the losery fans in blaming others for their own losery products, but for not stepping up security to protect visitors from the overwhelmingly violent ISU fanbase.

I imagine oscar will get at least two use-to-be-Iowa fans in his face tonight ready to scrap.

1 FG in last 8 minutes of the game. Great effort, but damn, our lack of scorers/offense got us again.

We ran bad offense down the stretch, granted, but not having another shooter killed us. Marcus was good about not being selfish, but we worked the ball for open shots a couple times to guys (Jevon) who just can't shoot.

Damn it. Missed opportunity.

We had our shot but I'm very pleased how we played.  We played OU and Isu dead even on the road and got a split.  We have actually played good in 5 of the 6 halves (not 2nd half at Osu)on the road in B12. Gives me some hope not only at Tech/Tcu but games at WV/Tex/Baylor

I lean that way too as an optimist, but we've got to do it now. No excuses left for this team.

Yes.

I don't have a problem with being encouraged by a team that is playing much closer to the level I expected before this season. I think this team has improved a ton since that terrible stretch in December, I just hope that awful basketball doesn't cost us a chance at the dance. I think this team is playing and being coached a solid level right now and we can win 10 or 11 league games if this continues.

But of course no excuses at this point, now we have to go out and win a lot of tough games.

No.

I'm  :bracketmouse: with a moral victory tonight. We aren't making the tournament but we are playing representative basketball and not embarrassing ourselves. What we thought about this team in the preseason is totally invalid. We are just 17 days removed from seeing just how bad this team can be. Our goals for this season are different. Don't embarrass the school, keep the home court streak alive, NO WEDNESDAYS, and win a couple in the NIT. With that in mind tonight was fine, would have been great to finish but we didn't. I'll take this as opposed to what we've recently been exposed to.

The real post season is still in play. I'm not going to dog this team for this performance, but the 50/50 ball opportunities killed us tonight. Up 4 with 6 to play, Foster shot that NBA 3, that was the game changer to me (he missed). He makes that, we're ballin. This team is playing above their talent and that's all I can ask for. If MIR can't accept 9-3 for K-State football, I'm not giving up on a tourney experience for this team yet.

K-State's situation reminds me of this ISU team: http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/team/schedule/_/id/66/year/2005/iowa-state-cyclones

They hit their stride after being 8-8 at one point in the season.

Me either.  Season is huge disappointment if we don't make it.  Obviously, if we play 14 or so more games like tonight, we are in easy.

I think ISU is winning the league and going to Final Four.  They are just stacked and aren't even playing remotely close to their potential, yet.

Long time no post.  Had a binger after this game to drown how pissed I was.  I show up for work and had to work some cognitive behavioral therapy on a client wearing a Cyclones shirt.  I almost refused.  The effed up teen said the only thing positive in his life are the Cyclones and I asked him if he went to any football games this year.  He started crying and I felt victorious.
