Wareham (MHK) on Jan. 23. They are one of the best & most demented bluegrass bands out there.
-
I saw Devil Makes Three and didn't get it. Oh well, cool they're playing the Wareham.
-
Joe Pug is playing as the undercard for Devil Makes Three. That alone would be worth it.
I bought tickets to see Strand of Oaks on Jan 17, which is exciting!

yeah, oddly enough when I went to DM3 it was also for the opener (who I enjoyed a lot more).

If you're psychologically well-adjusted or sober when you see them, then DM3 may not be your cup of tea.

Bluegrass....lol

Puddles Pity Party tonight!
-
The stoner white dude reggae show last night was a great time, michimichi.
-
I'm sure you guys had a great time.
-
People watching was worth the price of admission alone. What a crowd.
-
What kinds of people were there?
-
What kinds of people were there?
It ran the gamut of stoner white dudes and dudettes, hippies to hipsters to frat looking guys in button downs and snap-back hats turned backwards. The funniest for me were the mom, dad and daughter in the balong with us. I think it was the daughter's birthday because they kept bringing her drinks and taking pictures of her posing with them with the stage in the background.
-
"What a crowd" indeed

What's the story on your hate. I mean, I get not liking certain music or a certain singer, but to hate to the extent of breaking crap in beautiful Manhattan, KS...I don't understand.
Gonna win 'em all!

Just picked up Cold War Kids tickets for next Saturday

Skipping Reckless Kelly and The Damn Quails for an Extreme Midget Wrestling Federation promotion at RC McGraws. I'm not sure if I should cross-post this in the shame yourself thread or not. I'll only be mad if I miss Reckless performing 52 Vincent Black Lightning, but I'm pretty sure they don't play that live anymore.
-
They still do occasionally. The Damn Quails is what you should be mad about if you have already seen Reckless.

If you ever get a chance, check out Lost Wax in KC (play at O'Dowds a lot). It's the funk cover-band (read: wedding band) started by Chris Davis, David Fairbanks and Patrick Lentz. They put on a hell of a good show! https://www.facebook.com/lostwaxfunk/info
-
Alright, how would you rank these? Probably can't make it to all of them and having a tough time deciding.
Ry Cooder & Ricky Skaggs w/ spec guest Robert Earl Keen
Alabama Shakes
Trampled by Turtles / Devil Makes Three
Wilco
Cake
I saw TbT last year and had a blast, so would do again. I want to see REK but how much will he really be out there as a special guest?

man, what a week of shows. Sturgill Wednesday and Father John on Friday. FJM's new stuff is great live, he was on fire, but his stage persona isn't as mean as it used to be. :frown:
Sturgill probably has the coolest guitar player I've ever seen and Sturgill looks like he's gonna punch a rough rider in the mouth when he sings. srsly, folks, don't sleep on tix if he ever comes to KC.
-
Super jealous. Sturgill is only playing Lollapalooza in Chicago on a day I didn't get a ticket.

Help Abe decide his bonnaroo schedule!

THURSDAY:
Comedy if you can get to the first show (these are the only shows you might not get into)
Growlers
Courtney Barnett
Mac DeMarco (A friend who goes to a shitload of shows said his show this week in SF was the best he's ever seen)
Try to catch part of Jungle, too, maybe.
FRIDAY
UMO
Dawes
Sylvan Esso till Kacey Musgraves start till alabama Shakes start (or just wait for the shakes)
Kendrick (duh)
RTJ
Try to catch The Dø if you have anything left in the tank.
SATURDAY:
Phox
TBT
Woods
War on Drugs I guess
MMJ
Slayer (!)
D'Angelo (jesus why so late?)
SUNDAY:
Pokey LaFarge/Shakey Graves (seen both, both are good)
Hurray for the Riff Raff till Madisen Ward
Shabazz Palaces (the rest are stinkers)
Sturgill (he should be your other must see, he puts on one of the best shows I've seen)
Freddie Gibbs
Florence & the Machine/Caribou
go to your tent for Billy Joel
-
That's not far off what I was thinking. Probably Benjamin Booker instead of Courtney Barnett cause I have seen her but not him. And Songhoy Blues, definitely want to see them
-

yeah. I think Booker's kinda overrated but I've never seen him so that's a pretty call. never heard of songhoy blues. The lineup doesn't seem quite as strong as the last couple of years but it still kicks a lot of ass and it will be hard to go wrong.

You have to see Flying Lotus on Friday.

friday: oh my god between the buried and me.
also wtf, how do you choose between alabama shakes, atmosphere, and kacey musgraves? wow
you're not doing tears for fears? how/why not?
will there be one single person at the ben harper show? :frown:
saturday: how do you choose between bleachers and bahamas? try to do a lil of both
i agree with rusty on slayer. that is too good to pass up
i've seen bassnectar twice and both times i was about a 6+ and that makes it great. have no idea how anybody could enjoy it at level 1
sunday: obviously MW&MB, and obviously wear your KC gear
go see spoon after sturgill. i've been wanting to see spoon for like 10 years
florence + the machine are great live
-
Got a big month coming up, you guys...
May 2 - The Who
May 14 - Noel Gallagher & High Flying Birds
May 18 - Rush
-
Mostly what they said, although I'd be one of the few watching Ben Harper^
Strand of Oaks is a must on Thursday, and would be in my top 5 for the weekend.
Should catch the end of Childish Gambino after MMJ Saturday

Yes... Was it?

Saw the marmozets, the used and chevelle last night at the cotillion. All were great except the used. Well worth the price of admission
-
Chevelle was good? Saw them over 10 years ago and they were one of the worst live bands I've ever seen. I would have rather hit play on my cd player and watched paint dry.

Loved this show. Lots of babes, no lines, good tunes. Probably couldn't've been a better decision.
There any shows down at PnL this weekend?

I went to it for an hour, decided to go to an air conditioned bar for the USA game, then went back for portugal the man. PTM were great as always, played an encore after half the crowd left and played a really old song which was a nice treat.
Walked away with a coupon for a free burrito, 2 free chips and guac cards, and a free pizza from their new pizza concept that opens Wednesday
-
Just saw the Foo Fighters in Fenway.
Had seats probably 12ft from Dave on his throne. He acknowledged me twice.
Farking amazing show you guys.

Gonna check out Saint Motel tomorrow at the Record Bar

Was ridiculously good.
A mix of how good of a show he put on (jammed for almost 2.5 hours, so he covered every song you'd want to hear), and how awesome the venue is. If you've never been to the Mishawaka Amphitheater in Bellvue, CO, everyone should put it on their bucket list. It's in the foothills at the base of the Rocky Mountains, on the Poudre River. The pics don't do it justice.

Jesus! You're about 2 years late to the party, Froman.
R5's lead singer is an actor in a Disney channel show/movies. The rest of the band is his siblings.
It was a strangely diverse crowd between kids like my daughter (she is 6) and teen girls.

You guys. Last Friday I saw My Morning Jacket underneath the night sky and a colorfully-lit Superdome. It was seriously magical. My God. First time seeing them and they were all that and a bag of chips.
Saw them at Starlight last night (also a first timer, who only recently got into them) and can confirm that their performance does indeed come with a bag of chips (and a slightly indulgent saxophone solo).
Great show. Hard to think of a better way to spend a beautiful summer evening.
If I was a Colorful Colorado Cat, I would definitely do what I could to make it to the tour finale at Red Rocks tonight.

I'm trying to think of a show I would rather see less than Slightly Stoopid. Any ideas/nominations? I will say yes or now if I would rather see Slightly Stoopid.
I'll start:
Luke Bryan vs. Slightly Stoopid?
Slightly Stoopid would be worse
-
but if you feel differently, you should go.
-
Like, bands like Slightly Stoopid and Rebelution make me wonder where the breaking point is where weed stops helping musicians. Like, for Snoop, it seems to be a sweet spot. Afroman is definitely on the downhill slide. white stoner reggae is further on the downhill

but, you know, if that's your thing, let it be your thing.

i do know that rusty and i fall on the opposite sides of the luke bryan/ slightly stoopid coin. (although, i'm pretty sure i've been to a luke bryan show. i was time traveling, so i don't remember who the shitty headliner was)

I didn't want to do it, but I was asked to

I mean, yeah, white stoner music is fairly interchangeable, but nothing is worse than nu-country

I mean, yeah, white stoner music is fairly interchangeable, but nothing is worse than nu-country
yeah that's fair, but nu-country has guys like George Strait and Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson and some high-quality songs from folks like Kacey Musgraves and Little Big Town and Thomas Rhett.
As far as I know this is the apex of white stoner music:

watch it. all of it.

Like, what is the highlight at a Slightly Stoopid show? An incredible groove? Amazingly positive vibe moment? Longest guitar upstroke echo? The singer really nailing the accent? I'm really trying to understand here.
-
Concerts in general are boring, so I'm not getting your point

That's not true. Obviously if these guys are headlining Red Rocks, tons of people enjoy their concerts and I'm legitimately interested in why.

Unless you're seeing a stage production like gwar, rammstien or katy perry or something, it's just people singing and playing instruments. I imagine the highlights are similar to any other concert

this is wrong, but in that case what makes this kind of music better than other kinds of music to you? (or people who would go to this concert? if you don't want to go to this concert obviously the question doesn't apply to you)
-
What makes this worse than other types of music for you?
I honestly don't understand what you're looking for here. Music is very subjective, either you enjoy the sounds or not. Personally I find this "type" of music very relaxing and perfect as a background when doing tasks. I lean more to the pepper/sublime end of the spectrum, but I don't skip either of the two bands in question when they come on pandora

I find it a very stale, monotonous and boring imitation of a genre that is already pretty monotonous and boring but man the videos of their shows just make me think the crowds would be awful.
You have a fine reason to like it though.
-
I imagine the crowd at a kanye show would be unbearable
-
And I like hearing perspectives of why people like what they like, which isn't a new or unusual concept. I know some Phisheads, for example, and I've told them I don't "get it", but I enjoy hearing them describe what they like about the experience and their passion.
-
I imagine the crowd at a kanye show would be unbearable
Yeah, I'm sure a large portion would be. It would probably be very interesting, though.
-
Juggalos, tho.

rusty's criticisms are fair. the genre isn't all that creative and the constant pot references are ridiculous, but i still enjoy the music.
as to why i like the music, my roommate my freshman year loved rebelution, iration, the expendables and slightly stoopid. he played them all the time in our dorm room, and i eventually came to like those bands as well. we still stay in touch with each other today, talking about the shows we've gone to/ are going to. i have a similar relationship with erii. our trip to red rocks for slightly stoopid two years ago was such a good time. it's fun to go to concerts with your friends. shared experiences are neat.
i generally go to concerts because i listen to the artists regularly and don't support them through merchandise or music purchases, so i'll buy a concert ticket and go listen to music that I enjoy for a few hours. i don't feel that a slightly stoopid show is a can't miss event, but i'm already going to kansas city this weekend for something else. i also haven't seen the dirty heads or the expendables before, so that's a plus.
also, just about every concert crowd i've ever encountered are worse to be around than the crowds at white, stoner reggae shows, but i don't mind pot smoke and hippies. we don't get much of the skate/ surf bro element at shows in the midwest.

Let's get back to the concert sharing experience. I am seeing Explosions in the sky, GZA, Snoop Dogg, Tenacious D and The Prodigy this Sunday :excited:

Same crowds these days. Most 98.9 bands have that country twang/drawl to their music. Probably slightly more women at the pop country concerts.
-
What makes this worse than other types of music for you?
I honestly don't understand what you're looking for here. Music is very subjective, either you enjoy the sounds or not. Personally I find this "type" of music very relaxing and perfect as a background when doing tasks. I lean more to the pepper/sublime end of the spectrum, but I don't skip either of the two bands in question when they come on pandora
I find it a very stale, monotonous and boring imitation of a genre that is already pretty monotonous and boring but man the videos of their shows just make me think the crowds would be awful.
You have a fine reason to like it though.
this is a perfect michigancat post

Tech N9ne performed Burn Slow with Dirty Heads on Friday. That was the highlight of the show for me. The closed with Lay Me Down. Slightly Stoopid only made it about three songs into their set before the sky opened up and they called the show. I didn't stick around to see if they were going to come back on. I was soaked.

STS9 was a pretty amazing experience. We camped at Bear Creek Lake Park Friday and Saturday night. The camp grounds are about a $10 uber ride away from Red Rocks and are equipped with electricity at every site and decent communal bathrooms/ showers that they clean every morning. I will stay there again for a show when the weather is decent.

skipping work tomorrow to go to hardly strictly bluegrass. I really only wanna see Jessica Pratt, The Felice Brothers, and maybe The Mavericks. I'll probably bail before Connor Oberst. (sorry steve dave).
Anyway, it's a nice free festival. Kind of crazy how good it is, really.

Can you elaborate? It sounds interesting.
-
Basically he started a "eff the police" because some of his songs have to do with cops. Then started asking people in the front row why they hated the police and passing around the mic. Of course they all choked up and couldn't give a reason, one guy finally said he hated the police because he likes to smoke weed. Then he questioned them why smoking weed would make you "hate" the police and implied it wasn't a good enough reason. Then some guy in the back yelled out "because they are killing people!" and Vince agreed that was a good reason to say "eff the police". Then Vince talked about how these days he only has parking tickets and no beef with the police where he lives now, unlike his drug dealing days. It was almost like watching a comedian do crowd work.

I couldn't get Kendrick tickets. :frown:
saw a good review. Although I have seen some amazing shows with DJamer's and it's really hard to get a kickass live band. I've seen several rappers with extremely bland (but talented) backing bands and would probably be just as good or better with a DJamer.
-
speaking of which, did you guys hear that technics is going to start selling 1200's again?
-
Also this is definitely bay area sensitivity kicking in but I kind of think subtle racism is showing when people want and/or praise live bands in hip-hop. (I've been guilty of it).
-
super jealous you saw the felice bros, although i wasn't really in love with their latest album. frankie's gun is one of my favorite songs ever.

Can you flesh this out a little?
I've never seen a rap group with a band live, but on tv it almost always is worse than the album.

It's mostly been marinating in my head and this is the first time I've put it into words. Like the live band panders to white audiences because hip-hop performances with a DJamer - basically entirely created by blacks - aren't good enough for whites. It's not "real music" or a "real performance" in their eyes or something.
Does that make sense at all?
-
I can see your train of thought, but is it kind of subtle racism that you equate DJamer = black and band = white?
-
I can see your train of thought, but is it kind of subtle racism that you equate DJamer = black and band = white?
maybe, but black crowds generally don't give two shits whether or not there's a band. They accept hip-hop artists for what they are. White people want to see a band up there playin' some drums or something.
-
White people are stupid then
-
And i just want to point out I wasn't thinking that was what 8man was saying. Chance is doing something completely different from traditional anything and isn't pandering to anyone IMO.
-
man, that jimmy fallon band, the roots? that guy with the hair pick, he can really drum his drums.
there's nothing racist about it, the band concept makes more sense to white audiences so they're more willing to accept it.
hip hops adaptation of the roland tr-808 began with black dudes, in front of black dudes, listened to by black dudes. the use of technic 1200's for scratching and turning the turntables into an instrument was unique. all foreign to mainstream white audiences. most white dudes didn't know anything about an 808 so ya, it's new to them at first.
or you just have cases of crossover success like in cases like run dmc and aerosmith, both opened up themselves to new audiences with walk this way
do white kids care that deadmau5 doesn't play his sets with a band? no. is he more successful when he doesn't? no.
anyway i think you need to marinate on this thought some more
-

I think it was rescheduled, because he's playing at the Riot Room in February. :peek:

Yeah what happened was Nathaniel was supposed to play the recordbar before Thanksgiving but postponed it when the Buzz snagged them for XXmas. They rescheduled to February but the recordbar will be closing January 2nd ( :frown:) so now it's at the Riot Room (tickets from RB show will be honored). The recordbar show was already sold out so I would imagine the Riot Room one is too since they are pretty much the same size.

Not worried though. 2002 ICT was the best Tool show. 16 year old Abe was on the railing. The railing kept moving during the first few songs and like 15 beefy security bros had to push it back. My feet were off the ground for the first song (Sober)

So unless you're going to a NYE show, I feel it's time to do a top shows of the year list and bring this thread to a close. Feel free to do however many you feel are worth listing.
1. Run the Jewels - Bonnaroo
2. Chance the Rapper - Midland Theater
3. The Prodigy - Denver Riot Fest
4. Death Grips - The Granada
5. Future Islands - Terminal 5, NYC
6. 2015 Bonanroo Superjam
7. Tame Impala - Uptown Theater
8. Failure - Liberty Hall
9. Dr. Dog/The Districts - Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn
10. Puddles Pity Party - le poisson rouge, NYC
11. Jamie XX - Bonnaroo
12. Florence and the Machine - Bonnaroo
Honorable mention (only saw last 20 minutes) - Caribou @ Bonnaroo
-
Hmmmmm, I'll just do a top 3. Would not be the same for many people that saw the same concerts, but I like what I like.
#1: Ryan Bingham and Jamestown Revival - Exit/In (Nashville, TN)
#2: Ryan Adams and Houndmouth - Red Rocks (Morrison, CO)
#3: Eric Church and Dwight Yoakam - Pepsi Center (Denver, CO)
-
1. Ben Folds and Ingrid Michelson with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra - Red Rocks
I guess I only saw one show this year :horrorsurprise: I am officially old.
-

no, really, one of those was my favorite. Second favorite was Sturgill Simpson. Third favorite was Father John Misty. Fourth favorite was Sturgill Simpson in a less-intimate venue.
-
i bought coeur de pirate tickets when i was pak'd riding home on the bus the other night. now i just need to find someone who shares my love for this french canadian wonder.
-
I saw less than jake and reel big fish in January so I think that gets #1 by virtue of being the only concert of the year
-
My top three.
STS9- red rocks
Ben Harper- Crossroads
Yonder- Wareham
-
I haven't been to a concert in a long, long time. I've never been a big music/concert person. For Christmas, I got my 15 year old son tickets to Twenty One Pilots at Sprint Center. Seems like it will be fun.
-
Rick Rampus' Top 3 of 2015
1. Ryan Bingham and Jamestown Revival - Cain's Ballroom
2. Yonder Mountain String Band - Wareham
3. The Damn Quails - Lizard Lounge
-
Top 5, understanding that I probably forgot 2 or 3 that should be here:
- Strand of Oaks at Lincoln Hall
- Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit at Symphony Center, Chicago
- Gogol Bordello at Lollapalooza
- Wet and MS MR at Lincoln Hall
- Sturgill Simpson at The Metro (would probably be higher if it hadn't been a midnight show when I was exhausted)
-

2. Yonder Mountain String Band - Wareham
