Title: Kentucky Fried Chicken
Post by: Pete on December 25, 2014, 12:32:20 PM
Obviously, most of you have been asking yourselves "what's next" after the runaway hit thread "LJS."  The answer is the OTHER 3-letter acronym sensation of fried food! KFC!

Quote
One of the world's quirkier holiday traditions is now upon us. Every December 24, thousands and thousands of people in Japan leave the house and head to Kentucky Fried Chicken for the traditional Christmas Eve meal

Yes, that Kentucky Fried Chicken. KFC is so popular in Japan on Christmas Eve that there are often lines stretching down the block outside stores. Some people reserve their KFC "Christmas Party Barrels" up to two months in advance so as not to miss out.

Was trying to find out if they have LJS in Japan and learned that, just like KFC, LJS was founded in Kentucky. Holy crap, Kentucky.

It's on all of us that we didn't fight harder for Louisville over TCU/WVU.

Still, it's understandable how KFC is so beloved world wide.  It's delicious! Chum, let me ask you something personal...are you an original recipe or extra crispy man?  Be honest.

Holy crap.

And there’s romance. Christmas is considered the most romantic day of the year, surpassing Valentine’s Day and a similar celebration a month later known as White Day.

Most nice restaurants are booked well in advance by couples seeking to enjoy a romantic dinner on Christmas Eve. Love hotels, which cater to those who do not need more than a couple of hours’ stay, are usually fully occupied by couples seeking to enjoy some private time.

So lovey-dovey is the date that single adults often find it depressing. One restaurant in Tokyo even bans couples from entering on Christmas Eve in hopes of giving singles a break, though its approach doesn’t seem to have been adopted by its competitors.

I prefer original to extra crispy, but I eat grilled so I don't feel like a slug afterward.

Maybe controversial, but I've never had fried chicken that was definitely better than KFC. I've been to Strouds, Brookeville and others that are supposedly higher quality, but haven't felt they are much better in taste. It's an oddity to me that it's like the one national (International) fast food chain that does what they do as good or better than good mom and pop places.

Side note: I've never been to Chicken Annie's or Chicken Mary's in Pittsburg.

If you ever find yourself in the Pittsburg area on a Friday night, go to Barto's Idle Hour in Frontenac. They have good fried chicken, and they play polka music and all the old local hicks get up and dance. It's a real hoot.

Go Chicken Go in metro KC is superior to KFC.  If you permit entry of livers into the contest, it's an edge Go Chicken Go has that pushes it over the top.

Note: For you snobs don't deign to eat organ meat, livers from Go Chicken Go may change your mind.

Wow, lot to catch up on in this thread.  Here is a rundown....

1.  This thread is about fried chicken on the bone, not tenders etc.

2.  Popeye's is actually my favorite as well, because I like the spicey chicken and I prefer their sides (e.g. red beans and rice), but KFC is a global institution.

3.  As it turns out I actually MIGHT find myself in the great Pittsburgh area in the future.  However, I was told "Chicken Mary's" and "Chicken Annie's" are the two chicken joint that I should hit.  Is that not correct?

The traditional chicken at Go Chicken Go is definitely not better than KFC.  It's not.

You need to be into Livers to really appreciate Go Chicken Go.  I haven't tried them.

Hmmm....I'm more accustomed to the clinically out-of-date usage of "moron", but can live with being referred to as a cretin.  Can confirm that snobs look down on organ meat, and not because it's on their plate.

It just depends on how much garlic you like on your chicken. I like Chicken Mary's a little bit better, but all 3 are really good. I'd only recommend Barto's if it's polka night.

The Bartlesville KFC had an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet when I was a kid (maybe they still do). I'd go in there with my grandma and be the youngest person in the place by 50 years, but you know what, I can't remember a time when I was happier as a child, and I had a pretty damn good childhood, I think.

I've eaten whatever that is many times in every fried chicken place I can recall eating at. Seems as though it occurs under the ribs of a breast piece but I may be wrong on that. It's good - never made me sick.

For the record: Bone-in chicken only; KC bias...
1. Popeye's - spicy, but it depends on which one you go to. Johnson Drive & Broadmoor in Mission, KS is hands-down the best.
2. GoChickenGo
3. Churches
4. Price Chopper (not fast food but they season well and it's always done right.)
5. KFC - really depends on where you go but the way they cook the chicken sogs up too much of the breading underneath the fried surface. Not good eats!

Where is the uproar for the "Kentucky Style" baked beans?  They are putting old chicken in the beans and calling it "kentucky style" for Pete's Sake!

Wow have you guys had KFC lately?  Ever since they got rid of The Twister I’ve been pretty meh on KFC.  I wanted a chicken sandwich for lunch and thought I’d give KFC a try again, so old times sake.

They have these things called a “Big Box” now and I was like I might as well, ya know?  It was like $8 or something and probably could feed a family of 3.  I can normally eat all of any kind of fast food value mean, but not this one!  Nope, I couldn’t finish it and have leftovers for dinner now.  Who knew KFC would skyrocket back into my awareness so quickly.

KFC is extremely location dependent. There seems to be no qc from store to store. Smdh
