Title: How do you feel about hoops in nontraditional venues?
Post by: ednksu on November 27, 2014, 05:41:38 AM
I was thinking about this while watching Battle 4 Atlantis and noticed for the second year in a row they had some interesting lighting effects.

At halftime the players were left running out of the ballroom side doors in an awkward bit of confusion over which hallway to run down for locker rooms.

These games in outdoor venues had some serious issues with climate control.  One was postponed because of rain and one was called off because condensation kept accumulating on the court.

Football Stadiums
Now this is a venue which I've never cared for.  I found Jerry's world to be sterile for a football game (Cotton '12), so I couldn't imagine seeing a basketball game in one.

I really like the atlantis one.  I hate the foortball stadium settings.  Gotta imagne that a good quarter of the seats can't actually see what's going on.

Small venues: cool
Outdoor venues: stupid
football venues: should be for final four only

Football stadiums are okay when they tuck the court into the end zone, but putting it in the middle of the field  surrounded by a million folding chairs is rough ridin' stupid.

The Atlantis venue is super tight.

I think they chose the blue lighting to add to the underwater city of Atlantis feel. Can anyone confirm?

Come on, the aircraft carrier games are awesome.

Outdoor venues are cool, but should only be played early in the season and with high quality teams that likely won't have to worry about making the dance.  Too many variables to put on late when a team could need a marquee win or with a mid-major needing a resume win early.  They have largely done this right by those standards.

Football venues shouldn't host basketball games.  Its awful.  Play in a big basketball stadium and if everyone that wants to go can't fit, that's the price of a big sporting event.

Should do one in a C-5 Galaxy in the air at 35K feet. They could start the game in New York and End in Seattle as long as they refuel in the air.
