he was asked to sit on this scoop (a little too long if you ask me) because the situation was still pretty fluid.

There are few things better than having a job locked up so far before graduation. It is truly a great feeling. Feel free to look down on the rubes who are scrambling to find something at engineering career fair in the spring while you go around and chat it up.
-
Yes, pretty great.
-
Awesome. MAKE SURE TO GRADUATE!!
Gonna win 'em all!

Just 30 minutes ago I was offered my first "career" job. Huge bump in pay and about quadruple the benefits with a company that is well known as being good to their employees and promoting within. I'm pretty stoked. (it's in topeka tho)

what topeka 'stablishment serves the best chicken strips?

I've never gotten chicken strips in topeka, what a weird question
-
manhattan is austin and topeka is san marcos
I've done the commute from kc and lawrence to topeka when I was younger, it's not something I want to deal with at this point, so san pekas wins
-
Move to silver lake
-
there are decent places to live in Topeka, i work in Topeka and i'm currently commuting from Lawrence and am moving back to Topeka after me and Havs' lease is up.
-
I would just find a nice sushi restaurant and move near that.
-
Grats. Welcome to Topeka.

TBT do you have to move too?

TBT do you have to move too?
nope, staying in MHK :Woot:

so a question of etiquette... i'm going to be out of town tomorrow for work and won't have any chance at all to have an in person talk with my boss. should i call (or email?) him tomorrow to give my notice as a courtesy and have a face to face convo later, or wait until after a meeting we will both be at first thing friday? it should be noted that me leaving will have a considerable effect on the purpose of the meeting (look ahead scheduling) which could result in some wasted time if they find out after.

-
With a mtg like that, asap.

meet in person before the meeting Friday
-
i thought about that MC, but the meeting is at 6:30am, and i would have to ask him to come in early to discuss it and likely give the reason i'd need him to come in early anyway, so a phonecall tomorrow seems equivalent

i know

congratulations to all of the new job holders, especially lib7.
i think you should email and just mention, like, "sorry for emailing this, but i don't want you to waste time..." i don't know why people assume other people want to have their awkward convos in person. he'll probably be glad to get it emailed.
-
oh wait. if it's a construction guy, he will prefer to have an awkward conversation.

When I accepted my current job my previous boss was on vacation. I called her up while she was on the beach to let her know I was leaving. Not ideal by any means, but it seemed like time sensitive info.

what topeka 'stablishment serves the best chicken strips?
Skinny's. Especially with buffalo sauce. To be fair I haven't had Blind Tiger's but they do pretty much everything as great as you can for a Topeka restaurant.

BT is pretty awesome.
-
their TV commercial is always a joyous experience for me
-
Meeting at 6:30 am? What kind of bs...
I guess it makes sense if you are on the west coast and video conferencing with people on the east coast. Even then, that'd be a dick move on the east coast people's part.
-
Oh man, we have a guy that sometimes has to join in at 5am west coast!
I had a couple of calls that I had to join at 2 am. TWO AM!!!
Gonna win 'em all!
-
Construction people get up suuuuuuuuper early

Nope. Hooters. :fatty:

a classic for topeka situation

I'd probs just go with Sonic.
-
Congrats Luke and lib7.

Construction people get up suuuuuuuuper early
I actually prefer to get up about 9 and work until around 9...that would be my ideal schedule.
-
8-4 is my ideal. Would love that

Yeah me too. Did some excavation work one summer during college and those were my hours, it was fantastic

Do jobs like this actually exist outside of government?
-
The entire head of this 50,000 employee company I work for recently sent out an email that declared meetings should not start before 9 and must end by 5. Time zones may cause some exceptions.
Gonna win 'em all!

I'm not in corporate life, but this seems pretty normal? No?

at my job you're free to start a meeting before 9 but no one will show up

i don't really have a frame of reference bc i work at a very small company but 50,000 seems incredibly large. how many companies in the US have 50,000 or more employees? like, less than 10? i mean i could be way off here, i just have no idea.
-
never mind, i think there's a crap load

It's a global company.
Historically, a lot of meetings started at 8. Would occasionally have a meeting until 5:30 or 6:00.
Gonna win 'em all!

my new post grad employer (starting in june) is def over 50K employees... many different divisions tho. they have alot of employees out of germany which requires a 2 month summer vacation, so theres not much that gets done in the us at that time. and what does get done is usually by intern studs.
grats to other recent job acquirers luke tbt and lib7!
-
Welcome to Topeka all you goE'rs!! Maybe someday a Topaka will actually happen, probably not though
-
The only thing worse than a 8am meeting is a 1pm meeting. My typical lunch hour starts at 12:30 so when some a-hole calls for a meeting at 1 it throws my whole day off. :curse:
-
I usually eat at noon and then I have appt's at 1pm and it's tough. I'm like a snake after I eat. I have to move around to get it all down. I do this weird head nod thing and belch a lot while I'm talking during the meeting. It's a mess. :curse:
-
I have a guy who always schedules Friday meetings at 3. The worst.
-
8-4 is my ideal. Would love that
Do jobs like this actually exist outside of government?
I generally work 7:30-4 with a half hour lunch, although sometimes I decide to take a longer lunch or get here later (due to all the K-96/I-135/I-235 traffic) or whatever and stay a little later.
-

"Well everyone appeared to be free on Friday at 3:00."

Man, 80% of my meetings start before 8:30am and I work for the government (rarely anyone misses). What say you renocat?

This may be more suited for Fanning'S Job A vs Job B thread, but what's the max pay cut you would take to move to a job that you loved? Example, my current job (which I truly enjoy) will probably pay 5-10k less than my old job, but they only promote from within vs my old job which hired strictly outsiders.
Would you take a $10k pay cut today to have your salary doubled in the next year or two?
-
I've got a meeting at 8 am today. eff off.

this is a question of scale, but most people should answer yes. $10,000 is not that much in comparison to doubling your salary.
Gonna win 'em all!

I feel like this was just a way to brag about your someday raise.

At your age, advancement and happiness should priority over money as long as you meet whatever you feel your minimum living wage is.
