Will be very interested to see what the Committee's rankings look like compared to the AP Poll and the "Coaches" Poll (which really just copies the AP poll anyway). I think the game-changer could be that, unlike the media who obviously focus on the money-making games and the coaches who are too busy to watch any games other than their own, the Committee gives the same attention to each game regardless of whether it was on prime time or not.
I don't expect the results to be earth shattering, but I do seriously doubt we'll see 4 SEC teams in the top 5.
-
Will it affect the AP and coaches voting?
-
I'm with you catastrophe. I also seriously doubt the top 5 will be SEC heavy. I'm also curious to see if the AP and Coach's poll even exists in 10 years as the CFB playoff acts as an independent committee. My only concern is about the CFB committee itself. Will the committee be influenced by the AP and Coach's poll released on the Sunday night? If it's the other way around, why even have an AP and Coach's poll? I've never been a fan of pre-season polls anyway....
-
We still have rankings in basketball where they are even more irrelevant. So I'd expect that we will continue to have AP/Coaches rankings for the foreseeable future.
-
They will copy the AP poll
-
If it comes down to Condoleezza Rice the Cats are in for sure
-

I'm really surprised how many people are assuming competency. Have they not seen the clowns that make up this committee?

Plus it's impossible to watch enough games to really know who the best 25 teams are, even if you don't already have a real job like it appears most of the committee members do. I mean, the AP poll voters copy the AP poll.

Agreed. For all we know they are just going to get together and get drunk, be lazy and say screw it, we'll just do it by what the AP poll said. Less work for them, ESPN and the SEC are happy, and they get paid.

She doesn't know her head from her ass about FB. Couldn't believe they put her on her. Must of tried to cover the minority/women requirement w/ one person. Failed on both accounts!

Today is literally the first time I realized the committee has secret ballots and can just choose whoever they want and there's zero transparency or shared formula.
-
This playoff committee thing is going to be a disaster. And it's going to be hilarious.

Does the committee actually sit down together like the NCAA tournament committee or do they just mail in ballots?
-
Half of them probably already have their final ballots filled out.

The way I understand it is they all meet once a week and discuss teams. That's why Archie isn't participating this year because he won't be able to travel. This is the process:
It’s a five-step process: (1) Each committee member will list their top 25 teams, in no particular order. Teams listed by three or more members will remain under consideration; (2) each member will list their top six teams, in no particular order. The six teams receiving the most votes will comprise the pool for the first seeding ballot; (3) In the first seeding ballot, each member will rank those six teams -- one through six. Three teams receiving the fewest points will become the top three seeds. The three teams not seeded will be held over for the next seeding ballot; (4) each member will list the six best remaining teams, in no particular order. The three teams receiving the most votes will be added to the three teams held over to comprise the next seeding ballot; (5) Steps No. 3 and 4 will be repeated until 25 teams have been seeded. All votes will be by secret ballot.
I don't believe the SEC will have as strong a presence in the committee top 25 as the currently do in the media polls because they have more current info to base their decisions and won't be jaded by preseason predictions.

They should let America have a veto via telephone poll

even better, stagger the games and have the committee sit in chairs above each press box, when the game is over if you are worthy they turn their chairs. tonya would most definitely get into that sort of game show

I think this idea should be expanded. The committee should consist entirely of former coaches. The coaches should each select 4 teams from the audition. These teams would play against each other, and the other coaches will have the opportunity to steal the winner if they come away impressed. After round 1, it's coach against coach until only one team remains. And that team is your national champion.

yep, put it on the CW and we have a winner

Kegger at Condi's

I was really hoping this would be a thread for ranking the selection committee members

Condi is a no brainer at Number 1 just like Osborne is a shoo in for 13th.
-
I said it before and I'll say it again, but Condi will do a better job than all of those jock dweebs.

Probably, but we won't know because the ballots are secret.

Personally, I think we should just have a vicious, Hunger Games style rumble between mascots, and the final four survivors get to have their teams compete for the national title.
I personally want to see the WKU hilltopper thing beat the ever loving crap out of Lil Red.

If I were Nebraska, I would fill Lil' Red with mustard gas. Talk about a defense mechanism!

My biggest gripe with the committee process is definitely the lack of transparency. I mean, if dolts like Kellis Robinette have to make their ballots public for an irrelevant AP poll, then surely the committee votes for the playoff teams should be made public.
I understand that the whole purpose of the playoff is to make sure that the big dogs can keep the little guys on the outside looking in, but shouldn't they at least toss a bone in the general direction of fairness? The lack of transparency is going to cause way more drama than necessary.
Yeah undefeated Marshall, we considered you but our committee only voted you as the 19th best team. Did anyone vote for you to be in one of the four playoff spots? Well, I can't tell you that, that's a secret! Did anyone vote for you to be higher than 19th? Sorry, I can't tell you that either. All I can say is that we looked at your results and magically put you at #19. *shrug*
Sorry 11-1 Big 12 Champ K-State you didn't make the playoff, but 11-1 SEC West Division runner up Ole Miss did. Sorry, I'm not going to tell you how close you were because that's none of your business. All you need to know is that you weren't good enough. Now go play in that sandbox over there and let the adults have some peace and quiet for a while.
-
You should stick to asking if we have money for vanier 2, cause that post was bad
-
It's just a means to an end which is an expanded playoff. They will go to 8 after the 4 proves to be profitable.
-
Honest question, why didn't they want to use the BCS formula to choose the top 4 teams instead of the the top 2? The committee seems like a needless complication.
-
Because they couldn't get the stupid computers to pick 3 SEC teams
-
I like the idea (not practiced to my knowledge) of blank names and resume only. But what's the barometer? They're has to be some baseline for who is good, sos, etc. There has to be some unbiased ranking system to say team x beat team y and team y is good.
If not, you go off record alone
-

It's pronounced thermometer.
-
I don't think there's evidence that anyone but the sec would benefit from an unreasonable number of sec teams in the playoff.
Also, the selection should be made by a computer with a formula that is public.

Try gopowercat.com, you'll like it much better there, if you can afford the $10/month

Assuming they haven't just come out and said as much, it is pretty obvious the selection committee is intended to emulate the NCAA Tournament selection committee. Obviously when you're only picking four teams there will be significantly more controversy, but I think the main impetus behind the committee is that basketball selection committee has been far less criticized than the BCS.
What people seem to already forget about the BCS is that it suffers from two serious issues: (1) the programs themselves still depend on the human element and cannot be perfected (i.e., still subjective, people just pretend its not because the subjectivity happens on the front end); and (2) the polls making up part of the score allow for people who actually have skin in the game to affect the results, which is messed up. Even though what he did wasn't AS egregious, a few years ago when Nick Saban wanted to keep OSU out of the championship game, he could have left them off his ballot entirely.

It will be equally as good as the basketball committee and infinitely better than letting jock sniffing sports journalists decide.
-
they'll do a great job. the BCS did a pretty great job as well. everyone will bitch about bias and SEC and ESPN and a bunch of small timey bullshit and I'll laugh at those people. circle of life.
-
2011 was not a great job
-
2011 was not a great job
it got it right
-
Having a coaches vote be part of the bcs was pretty dumb tho
-
The BCS did the championship games alright but they mumped up the rest of the matchups plenty.
My hopes for the committee:
-Reward a tough non-con. It will encourage better games and help the sport. Football will be much better if all the teams tried to have the best résumé and not just be undefeated. (This isn't to prop K-State up for playing Auburn as I realize in most years that this criteria wouldn't benefit K-State).
-Rank based on résumé, not hypotheticals and "eye tests."
I don't like 2 teams in from the same conference as it devalues the regular season. Hypothetically, if Miss St beat Ole Miss in the regular season, I don't see why they should have to do it again in the playoff. That said, I don't know what the solution is as the most deserving teams deserve to get in. I guess I would be for a rule saying that a conference can't play itself in the semis or something as that may help. If they both win the semis, than maybe Ole Miss has earned another shot.
-
BCS formula had nothing to do with the non-championship game. Those were all selected by game committees. BCS formula just picked the top two.
-
Its so weird how people talk about the playoff committee like its the rough ridin' council of Trent. It's college football. It's not that hard to judge. We do it pretty well on here and half of us are retards.
-
Yeah, I could get it correct 100% of the time. I'm not a whiny homer though.
-
Yeah you could easily do it sd
-

There were rules regarding the formula and who they had to/could pick, particularly towards the end.
-
2011 was bullshit but only because it made lsu play a team they already beat on the road, not because the two teams weren't the best.
-

FYP. I try to stay out of this conversation for the most part, but let's be honest. The majority of the driving force for this whole situation is the almighty dollar. Sure, they have to make it look somewhat legit with the "best" teams making it into the playoff, but it's really the most profitable match ups that will make up these last 3 games to determine a "Champion". Let's just enjoy how bad ass some of these Big 12 games will be over the next few weeks.
-
WVU fans are like conspiracy theory fanatics with this stuff. Why is that?
-
isnt their ad on the committee?

Cover-up, maaaan!

I don't know how anyone can claim the BCS ever got it right in all of those seasons with multiple 1 loss teams or with undefeated non power conference teams. That 2012 Oregon team was the best in the country but somewhere along the way the media determined that K-State and Oregon had to be undefeated to be considered equal to the SEC champion and the pollsters fell for it.

Alabama beat 5 teams in the top 15 that regular season. Oregon didn't beat one in the regular season. Was Oregon the best team, maybe, but they didn't have the best resume.

So if it was about the resume instead of the best team doesn't that fly in the face of getting it right?
They were also clearly better than Notre Dame but Oregon fell victim to a talking point.

Most of those 5 were SEC teams, ranked in the top 15 as a result of national media perception. Regardless, it's a better resume, but it's also indicative of more SEC-fulfilling prophecy.
