This formula appears to be the correct one
-
oh hey guys, can i propose an alternative to the current form of scoring? I tried to come up with something that rewarded both precision and accuracy as well as punishing you for not picking the correct winner. FWIW when I ran it against this past weeks scores Chings scored a 65%, Mo a 62% and MT a 53%. In this case the higher the percentage the better. Let me know if you'd be interested, otherwise i'll just shut up about it. thanksgocats

Hub, would you describe your system as an algorithm?
If so, have you prepared to name it with an acronym?
-
Hub, would you describe your system as an algorithm?
If so, have you prepared to name it with an acronym?
It has algorithmic properties, i suppose. Although, I don't suppose it really needs to be since it's not trying to make an accurate prediction of the future, it's just intended to fairly evaluate everyone else's algs. But if it had a name, i'd call it JUDGE
-
Hmmmmm, JUDGE seems like it's just under doing goEMAW's elites
-
This JUDGE sounds like it knows what it's doing. Great work hub.

this isn't a predicto thread. this is a thread where two algorithms are compared for the purposes of entertainment for the two creators of the algorithms.
also FSD, 45% of your posts are in the Pit. i like my hobby just fine.
-
My algorithm is named DREAM YOST, fwiw.
-
what does dream yost stand for, ratm?
seriously tho, FSD, go look it up. 45%. not made up.
-
I named it DREAM YOST because Ned Yost is a dreamboat, just like my algorithm.
-
Disappointing Realization, Everyone: Acronym Missing. You're Overmatched, Son. Tata!
-
It's an algorithm, not an acronym.
-
the algorithms are named with acronyms that describe the algorithms
for example: scores need obvious work but results are great
-
also: Chingon Master Empirical Rating Algorithm
-
should've called yours ratmouse
-
Death Ray to Eliminate the Alien Menace Yearning to Obliterate Seaworld in Texas
There. It's now an acronym.

Is that, like, a byproduct of the algorithm?

What does 45% have to do with anything, anyways?

Those aren't acronyms those are initialisms.

Those aren't acronyms those are initialisms.
Wrong again.

JUDGE has spoken:
kslim - 47.5%
SNOWBRAG - 47.2%
FSD - 46.9%
DREAM YOST - 42.4%
METROSEXUAL - 40.4%
CHIMERA - 39.7%
Some comments:
*No, the QATZ game was not weighted. All games were evaluated in the same manner.
*Yes, FSD and kslim were both punished for not having an acronym.
*Millertime - interesting strategy...abstaining from picking the ND/FSU game. Doesn't look like it paid off this time.
*If Chings could have picked a winner he would have smoked all you fools and it wouldn't have been close. But he can't, so he didn't.
*JUDGE can accommodate a "confidence factor" if moving forward you want to assign your level of confidence from 1-7 for each game.

kslim, is your algorithm just your eye test through ksu glasses?
no, it is a very complex system that uses codec and other software to spit out my formulas

yes that was some major league algorithming. Chings is right on your tail so don't get cocky. Actually there really isn't much separation across the board, everyone was pretty accurate.
Still waiting on millertime :dubious:

stupid holgo went for the FG when they would have scored the TD (I KNOW THEY WOULD HAVE).

The field goal is the right play if you are trying to win, though. You have to give yourself enough time to get the second score.

they were going to have to recover an onside kick in either scenario. No sense in running 2 extremely risky plays (converting on 4th and medium or game is over, followed by recovering onside kick) unless you absolutely have to.
-
Oh you can feed me this male genitals and a bull story about what the right call was, but if he went for the TD ChiMERA would have been pretty damn close.
-
sounds like CHiMERA needs a little more fine tuning? Should check w/ 8mp, he seems to be on point.

we don't miss/have one blocked those two field goals and Pixies would have been off by a single point

so does everyone pretty much plug in the Vegas over/under and find where the spread meets and just post a score close to that? Kinda what it looks like to me.

JUDGE: a very solid showing across the board.
CHIMERA - 0.577
BOWTRUSS - 0.507
PIXIES - 0.474
DREAMYOST - 0.450
SNOWBRAG - 0.436
"null hypothesis" - 0.145
*the "null hypothesis" would be predicting the favored team to score <1 and the unfavored team to score 0.
BOWTRUSS was remarkable in the KSU/WVU game, Marshall/UAB and KU/OU. If not for the NW/Purdue game BOWTRUSS probably would have won.
CHIMERA was even more solid than usual, but getting more actual winners correct this week set Chings apart from the rest.

I'd be interested in seeing if any of us beat the Vegas spread combined with the O/U

I'd be interested in seeing if any of us beat the Vegas spread combined with the O/U
Had you guys placed bets for head to head, over/under, and against the spread, you would have performed as follows:
PIXIES - 20 of 30
CHIMERA/SNOWBRAG - 19 of 30
DREAMYOST - 18 of 30
BOWTRUSS - 17 of 30
*This is based on where everything closed according to covers.com IIRC the lines only moved enough to have affected one outcome for RATM but otherwise the line moving was mostly inconsequential.

What I meant is that, say the line is 6 points, and the O/U is 50. The implied score predicted is 28-22. Given that, what would Vegas score according to your ranking system? Would any of our algos come close?

Oh, I see what you're saying. If one were to bet the implied vegas score that would have yielded a 0.413. So, everyone did a little bit better than vegas. You and Chingon by a considerable margin.

Sorry, what is 0.413 a measure of?
-
0.413 means I hope you didn't bet any of the farms bc you'd probably be lucky to break even. If anyone was putting up a 0.600 or above on the reg, call your bookie. Above a 0.800 and you should probably be a professional bookmaker. 0.900 or better -- the fix is in.

The thing about picking bowls is really trying to determine which side has the greater motivation for their meaningless exhibition. LY, for example, I think the 'cats and Michigan were far more similar teams than the score indicated. However, that game ended up being an easy win as it was apparent from the outset that our kids were treating the BWW as Super Bowl 45.
Thanks for posting this, though. Having math AND a motivated team is always best!!
-
Totally agree, and my formula takes into account nothing but the math. For the bowls I took out all the home field modifiers too, and don't take into account who has less travel, because I have no idea how relevant it is. I don't have any idea how to go about determining motivation for 78 different teams and account for that on the scoreboard, so this will have to do for now.

There's really no way to do it that I can guess... All you can really do is read local reports for each team and figure out what's real and what isn't.
FWIW, I think GMFP will be able to get the froggies up to play their game, but doubt that Briles will have the same luck with that merry band of cheap shot artists and chest thumpers.

Yeah, Briles has spent too much time on tv telling people that his team belongs in the playoffs to allow him to convince his players that they should give a crap about the Cotton Bowl. Then again, I don't think Michigan State is nearly as good as Baylor, so if Baylor gets an early lead, they could still take off and not look back.
-
You're forgetting Briles has specifically said they weren't going to dwell on getting left out of the playoffs. I don't know how you could miss that, it's like the only thing he's talked about the last week...
