So there have been a few mentions about the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that I could find on here. While I was in Texas this weekend I did it and donated. This thing has really raised a lot of money and awareness. How many of you guys have done it? Know anyone that has been affected by it? If you have been challenged but didn't do it, why? How much money and how long do you think it can go?
http://www.alsa.org/news/media/press-releases/ice-bucket-donations-082414.html
-
Done it twice, won't go back on Facebook again until this thing dies down because 80% of people don't donate which makes this just a dump a cold bucket of water on your head
-
I was told I was "called out"...thanks for the reminder to go kick some money over to ALS. :kstategrad:
-
Did you know that ALS affects only 30,000 Americans?
-
what if they find out ice causes it :ohno:
-
The Alzheimer's and cancer guys have to be pretty.upset they didnt start it.
-
I was hoping this would be a serious thread and I about made it not serious for a group that CNS pointed out
-
Donated in memory of my dad. Pretty terrible disease and it is nice to see it has raised so much money.

Steven Hawking is someone I have always had an interest in for his knowledge/theories/predictions in the world of theoretical physics and he could have done so much more I think if this disease hadn't made it impossible for him to talk.
Lou Gehrig was a founding member of "murder's row" for the Yankees and his struggle with the illness ended a great career.

You could argue that it was because of this disease that Hawking became who he is. Before it he was more of a class-clown, believe it or not, and didn't quite commit his cognitive faculties as he did after being given 2-3 years to live in the early 1960's...of which much, if not all of his scientific contributions came afterwards.

Did you complete your PhD when you were 23? Did you graduate college at 20? I mean, a great mind is a great mind.

Terrible disease, but research funding is needed much more than "awareness." Sweet, now way more people are aware of my imminent death.

did it. split my $100 between ALS, alzheimers and cancer research.

Yeah, chicken, eggcetera... I just wish that much of it weren't swallowed up as administrative costs. I do think the government should be more involved in direct funding for medical research. Compared to our spending on defense and entitlements, it's a relatively small amount of money and I wouldn't mind paying a couple of bucks a year for it.

I think his eyes make the face, and the "deal with it" might be over played, but I'd like to see this with the shades at the end.

http://www.vox.com/2014/8/20/6040435/als-ice-bucket-challenge-and-why-we-give-to-charity-donate
this article pretty much describes how i feel in a much more intelligent way than I could. also the graphic in the middle of the article shows some interesting figures comparing $ donated to diseases that actually kill ppl.... Maybe we are donating money to the wrong diseases? maybe those diseases aren't killing as many ppl because they have had so many donations? who knows

Everyone realizes that ALS is such a small fish in a big pond that it's a little insane right? I mean, 30,000 people in the US diagnosed our of 320 million people total in the US is only like 0.009%.
We're frying the wrong fish here guys...

I sure hope I get one of the popular diseases.

I think someone should challenge the researchers to a liquid nitrogen challenge if this awareness doesn't achieve significant results within a decade or so.

Gonna win 'em all!

What's up with the people who take the challenge and then pass it on to about a dozen people? You get three. We get it...you have lots of friends. Yeesh...
-
I'm also noticing that people are starting to take the challenge but instead promoting and donating to a different cause of personal significance to them (autism, soldiers, etc).
This might go on forever if people keep ice bucketing for every charitable cause in existence.
-
I am so glad I am not on Facebook.

complaining about the ice bucket thing it isn't going to get you a lot of funding for your casualties cut-off line disease list.

What if we just started throwing water on homeless or stinky people and said we were ice bucket challenging them? :dunno:

Some kid in Scotland died doing the ice bucket challenge. At least it was for a good cause.

Somebody should start an Ice Cream challenge, where if you don't donate money to some charity, then you have to serve ice cream to all of the kids on your block. That would be way more fun than dropping a bucket full of ice on your head and posting a video of it on the internet.
-
So everyone who posted a video is refusing to donate? Isn't that how it works?
-
So everyone who posted a video is refusing to donate? Isn't that how it works?
I'm pretty sure if you dump a bucket of water over your head you are still expected to give a little bit... $10 or $20. If you don't then you are supposed to give $100.
But then again who knows.
-
i think you donate for every person you challenge that completes the challenge? (people dont care about the rules but i think those are the original rules)
-
There shouldn't be any rules. Donate what you can if you feel the need to.
-
The ice bucket challenge has raised an unprecedented amount to combat the fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Between July 29 and Aug. 25, the ALS Association has raised $79.7 million from about 1.7 million donors in its fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease, according to TIME. During that same period last year, the organization raised about $2.5 million.
