Title: How good can this 2014 version of the Wild, Wildcats be?
Post by: Bqqkie Pimp on July 23, 2014, 10:26:05 AM
Senior stud leadership on both sides of the ball?  Finney/Mueller - check

Amazing "rags to riches" walkon stories?  See above - check

Offensive "Superstar" that's virtually unstoppable?  Lockett - check

Defensive "difference maker"?  Clinkscales - time will tell

No "summertime warnings" from Snyder? HCBS seems pleased - check

Guys, this schedule is BRUTAL.  However, the work ethic and unity with this group seems to be unmatched in comparison to teams of yesteryear.  Snyder is using many of the same descriptions he used with Klein when speaking of Waters.

I'm having a hard time tempering my enthusiasm at this point, but that schedule is just BRUTAL.

what's your take on the RB and DB positions.  slightly concerned about our secondary (minus Barnett and Evans)

I also like the senior leadership at QB in Waters.  Plus he is a stone cold fox...at least my wife seems to think.

I think we just might win 9 games this year, if all the pieces fall into place.

As for RB, it's my belief that Baby Gronk will get a lot more carries out of one back sets this year and that Leverette/Jones will turn out to be as serviceable as Hickman/Lawrence were back in the 90's.   I don't expect anybody to put up eye-popping numbers but with Lockett & Co. putting stress on the back end of defenses, there should be some open running lanes.

With the DB's, nothing makes DB's look better than a good DL/pass rush and I think we have that.  This might be the best overall DL we've had since the Fatafehi/Howard days.  The McDaniel kid is a big, aggressive corner.  Barnett & Evans are proven commodities as you've mentioned and I believe that we've got the athletes to create enough competition that whomever else surfaces will be adequate, especially given what I believe we have at DL.

Potential to be the best since The Wizard has been back. I think it will mostly depend on how well the lines perform. If the O-Line becomes as good as we've hoped them to be the last few years, then that offense will be unstoppable (I don't care who's running the ball). IF Clinks is a beast and Mueller and Britz continue to be awesome it will take a lot of pressure off of the DBs as you've said.  I'm also really torn on our LBs right now. They could end up being very good or terrible. I wish someone had more info on that position.

I'm afraid this leaves you with a lot of potential to be very disappointed. I would love for you to be right, though.

Aren't Hickman and Lawrence both near the top of all time rushers in Cat history?

I meant Hickson (  ), but thanks for knowing who I meant. And, yeah, you're right... They're both in the top 10 all time however they're also behind Hubert and Daniel Thomas, despite DT only playing two seasons.

Chart looks like this:

1. Sproles 4,979
2. Hubert  2,993
3. Thomas 2,850
4. Roberson 2,818
5. Hickson 2,537
6. Klein 2,485
7. Lawrence 2,265

Hell, even if this years backs are as good as James Johnson was on the Prince teams (#15. 1,509 total yds) we should be in good shape.

It's always bothered me that Sproles came up 21 effing yards short of 5K.  :frown:

He also came up 14 yards short of 2K in 2003.  :frown: :frown:

Still concerned about the OL.  Ground/run game needs to sustain drives and keep defense off field.  Can't just rely on the other team forgetting about lockett. OL hasn't been above good since the first half of the 12 season. Kind of concerned about back 7 on D.
