So I watch this show on CNN thursday nights. Last night was the civil rights of the 60s. I knew about a lot of this stuff but man, those interviews of the deep south sheriffs and governors and stuff really make you sad about human beings. It's like a parody TV version of deep south racist pieces of crap but in real life.
-
Also I like Lyndon Johnson more now than I did before.
-
also the Vietnam War. what in the actual eff were we thinking?

That same Lyndon you like so much really mumped us on that one.

yeah, that's why I didn't like him. then the civil rights one was the next week and I liked him more.

watching these made me realize I know absolutely nothing about the 60s fwiw. like, everything I know I learned from the wonder years and I'm pretty sure that was just the late 60s.

To be fair, every president from Roosevelt to Nixon mumped us in Vietnam. (Maybe Ford, too, not clear on the dates).

Ya, true.
The sixties would have been a fun time to be alive, but not in Vietnam.

sd how old are your parents?
-
*roosevelt actually was pretty good about Vietnam
-
sd how old are your parents?
56-60'ish. I don't think many of the things I'm going to see on this show are going to relate to being a little kid in western KS though.
-
sd how old are your parents?
around 57'ish
I bet you know the 70's like a mutha!

I don't think being in western ks relates to much of anything actually.

I watched this too. I kinda started watching in the middle but I think a southern governor was standing in a door to literally block black people from walking in
-
I'm intrigued! I think I'll DVR it!

yeah, that rough ridin' guy. the sheriff that was his bud was worse I think. like smoky in smoky and the bandit but instead of bumbling he's a racist piece of crap.

I love those shots of the control room, where everyone is smoking and wearing black rimmed glasses.

space race stuff fascinates me. Its like the opposite of southern racism and makes me feel better about people. Like, it was all inspired by primal ape competitiveness, but we can do rough ridin' amazing things when motivated

mrs. dave informed me last night that it was the space race that spurred the huge increase in gov. funding for higher education and grants and loans and stuff

I mean that makes sense since we probably started to value smart people more.

Max yasgur's 600 acre upstate farm has some great 60's memories.
-
60s cars are just the best. too bad they were designed built and driven by complete racist crap heads :frown:

YEP. Take a trip to the Cosmosphere in Hutch because their whole museum is dedicated to that fact..

I posed this question the other night.
After the so called fight in Vietnam to fight off the boogie man fear of the spread of communism, we ended up opening relations to the other granddaddy commie nation China in 72. :dunno:

This nostalgic crap is bullshit anyway. All of the rough ridin' 60's sucked, thats why people had to smoke so much dope. Literally every measurable of life factor is better, today.

Lower-middle class families families in the 50s/60s could afford a house, car(s), and they didn't have to pay for their kid's college education because it was feasible for them to work their way through school. All of that on one income. I'd say that quite a few folks would sign up for that deal right now. That's not nostalgia, that's a robust economy coupled with a very strong currency.
-
Plus they were able to do as many drugs as they wanted because there wasn't all the bullshit laws back then as opposed to today. Peace

Deuce the rest of the world was decimated by WWII, that's the only reason. Not worth it

Didn't say it was worth it, just pointing out not everything sucked ass in the 60s.

I am a fan

Of the program.

Every time I meet an old timer and we discuss quail hunting they talk about the 60's and 70's and how awesome it was and it makes me sad for myself for happy for them.

all old people say that everything was amazing when they weren't old. this is pretty basic stuff that has gone on since the very beginning of time. PROTIP: Things have never been as good (on the macro scale) as they are right now.

I dunno, I think the outdoors in general (is that macro level?) was better at sometime in the past than it is now.
-
I get your sentiment SD but I think its ok to be nostalgic about certain things in the past.

you'd have gotten eaten by a grizzley bear or dinosaur or died of asphyxiation by now at some point in the past. it's better today.

I'm not saying you can't. but being nostalgic about something you never experienced is pretty losery.

It was a good death.

I'm not nostalgic about anything from my childhood in the 80s/90s. We didn't even have internet.
-
Riding around in the backseat of my mom's 1980 VW Scirocco and singing "girl you know it yes you now it's true ooo ooo ooo I love youuuu" was pretty sweet.

You could do that today, though. I guess you would probably have to substitute some other car for the Scirocco, but it's not worth getting nostalgic over.

There is video of a young SdK singing "blame it on the rain." I was in Germany singing it too!

Just stumbled on this image that I'd never seen before. Relevant to the 60s, marching bands, tracks at football stadiums...
