Title: elctrc rzr
Post by: Dr Rick Daris on April 07, 2010, 09:21:46 AM
probably need to get one. i've just been using a beard trimmer for the last year and i always look like i have a days growth. every once in a while i need to be clean and HATE using a razor and shaving cream. thoughts? ideas? how long do these things last? how close will they get me? can i go cheap here and still get something decent?

Don't go cheap. They do an ok job. If you grow a thick dark beard you may not like it. They get pretty close, but not as good as a razor. I replace mine every couple years.

there are very few things that i hate more than shaving w/ a razor and shaving cream. wet socks are one.

I use a dull, disposable razor in the shower with no shaving cream.  I'll use the same one for months.  Only try this if you are incredibly manly.

Used a Norelco for quite a while.  Never would get me smooth.  Always felt like it was afternoon-of-the-day-you-shaved growth immediately after you finished shaving.

Wife hated it.  Still scratched her up, even after shaving.

Back to gel and disposables.

Seriously considering having laser treatment on the face.  Could probably pay for itself after 2 or 3 years of not buying shaving crap anymore.  I look like a homeless person with a beard.

I spent 150 on a Norelco about 6 years ago and it still works great.  It will keep your face smooth you just gotta have some patience and take a little more time in the morning.

One benefit of using and reusing disposable razor in the shower with no shaving cream is that it's great if you have very little time and are very impatient.

My dad bought me a nice panasonic one a couple years ago for christmas and said it would be really good.  I didn't really think much of it, but it's been over 3 years now (maybe even 4, can't remember) and the thing works just like new with no signs of slowing down, love it.

I replace the cleaning fluid maybe once every 4-6 months. I replace the head after 2 years. It's pretty good if you just need to clean up your shave. I use it daily. If I skip a day or two, I need to wet shave, just to get really close.

The Norelco info said that it will shave you in a different direction than what you prolly do with a disposable.  It said it takes something like 90 days for your beard to get used to it.    That was about 5 yrs ago, so don't know if they still state that.

You would be better off going to a good barber and paying him for the works if it is only on a rare occasion that you are going for the clean shave.

If you indeed get the electric razor you def. need

It makes the hairs stand up for a closer easier shave.

Tons easier. The main reason I use it. Takes me about half the time if I shave daily. If it's a bit long, it will take a while to shave.

Don't use the lectric shave stuff.  Your face will dry up something awful.  If you do get an electric, use it for a month or so before you give up.  Your face has to adjust.  Not sure why.

If the objective of shaving is not having a beard, I can testify that not having a mirror works just as well as having a mirror.  So, no, I will not be adding this suggestion to the ultimate shaving formula.  1) shower. 2) 1 pack of blades per year or so. 3) no shaving cream.  That's it.

I've had a $100 Braun for about 5 years, replaced the blades about a year ago.  It's works great during the week when I'm short on time, but it's not a close as a real shave.

this sounds good. don't care about getting a "close" shave. don't like spending time shaving. i have a beard/mustache trimmer that i keep at work and use it every day or so. just hate shaving. i could keep an electric razor there instead. it'd get me a little "closer" which would be perfect.

I have to buy a new razor in the near future. I'm weighing the options myself but could use ALL of your help.

The options are as follows:

A- Buy a new straight razor (which kind?)
B- Buy an electric razor (which kind?)
C- Buy more cartridges for the Gillette Mach razor I already own (For some reason this is more expensive than buying a new razor entirely)

Now, I own an electric razor that I used to use when I first started shaving, but I found it works better on other places  :sdeek:. I shave about every other day. What should I do, you guys?

electric razers are dogshit if you have thick facial hair.  given you only shave every other day you could probably use one.

If you want your face to feel smooth when done shaving, don't get an elect.  If you want to feel a bunch of small prickles that will 5'oclock shadow up that day, then def get an elect razor.
