Title: Garage sales!
Post by: kslim on May 29, 2014, 10:21:28 AM
Man they are just the worst. I have all of this crap I don't want anymore and the mouth breathers it brings are hilarious, what say you gE.blog is it better to just donate it/throw it away or make a little extra scratch getting rid of your old crap?

One of my friends bailed on a weekend of fishing for garage sale weekend one time.  I think they made a couple hundred bucks.  Better to just donate it all, claim it's worth way more, and enjoy your weekend not dealing with the general public.

Usually will stop by them in my hood to check out if there are any good finds on tools. Still don't think I've bought anything

No, this is something homeowners do at some point in their lives.  Especially if you live in a smaller town that has those white-midwesterny city wide garage sales/town festival combo.  I finally participated in my town's sale last fall and it was kinda neat to do just once.  I made like $150 off of crap that wasn't even worth my effort of throwing in a dumpster.

love them.  having/going it doesn't matter.  whoever thinks it's no fun to pull crap out of their storage that they haven't used/seen in years and set it on the driveway to pocket $1000 on a saturday while drinking beer is really weird and i probably wouldn't want to drink a beer with them because they are obviously a hoarder

It's fun if you can work up the motivation to actually do it. Kick in back in the lawn chair and sip some suds and get ready for some dickerin' (new word i learned from the history channel) and get rid of some stuff (the first world's greatest burden)

sell any larger items of real value on craigslist or ebay though

They're great. My wife loves to shop at them, and while some wives go shopping and spend $200, she'll spend $14.75 on a Saturday.

Wait until your friend is having a garage sale and just take your crap over there and have them sell it for you. That's what I did.

Somebody did that at my sale one time. I only gave them about 10% of what their crap sold for.

Never had one for me. I kind of like interesting and unique stuff flea markets and lower end antique stores sometimes offer so on a level I kind of want to go to garage sales. But then I'm like, anything good will be taken by those weirdos that show up and 7am and it's probably just baby clothes so....nah.

my neighbors across the street and my wife have had garage sales the past two years. i let my wife keep whatever she makes. sometimes i think she buys stuff just to put it in the yearly garage sale. both years i get stuck running the register for twenty minutes and it is absolutely horrible/frightening. i don't like it.

Rick, did she also buy the register specifically for the garage sales?

slim how would you describe the haggling situ?  Lots of negotiating or are people paying sticker?  My understanding is that when people see rock bottom prices the immediate reaction is to see if they can get it for even less.  Have not ever had a garage sale though, so cannot confirm.

by register i just mean small box with money in it. people that i don't know walking around my garage looking at my crap that i don't want while i sit and wait for them to haggle me. almost as bad as wet socks it's just the worst.

who in the world gets drunk at their own garage sale on a Thursday morning?

Also, craigslist will get you more money, but be more work if you're selling. If you're buying, garage sales are more work/less money. Generally.

When I had my garage sale my stuff was marked down so low that not one goddam person haggled with me all morning.  They just paid what was marked on the item no questions asked.  Some people were even totalling the stuff up for me saying "Well it looks like I owe you $5.75!"  I was truly looking forward to mushing some old lady or white trash person for offering me 20 cents on a $1 item or whatever and didn't even get to do that.

I value my time too much to try to sell a few things for a dollar.  We only participate when we have two or three large items, then close up shop when those few things are gone.
Also, we only garage sale them when we have already struck out on craigslist.

The worst is when someone you know (in my case my boss) invites you to their garage sale and is all "there is tons of good stuff, and great kids clothes", then you show up and it's all just horrible stuff, and the kids clothes are so ugly you would feel bad making your kids wear them, just so awkward

had some old tv stand and TV set up and made a sign - $-5 for TV, $5 for stand+TV, $15 for just the stand and someone bought just the stand without batting an eye or haggling

the actual setting everything up was predictably awful but the actual sale itself wasn't terrible (smoked meats, got pak'd)
