Title: What are you snobbiest about?
Post by: michigancat on May 22, 2014, 12:02:01 PM
Believe it or not, I'm not snobbiest about music, as I regularly mention my love of new pop country and pop music in general.

HOWEVER, I am a rough ridin' snob when it comes to concert venues. Pretty much any venue over 500 people and I don't want to go, even if it's a band I really like. If it's a small place, the sound better not be shitty. I'm kind of obnoxious about it really.

So, combo fanners, what are you snobbiest about?

Message boards. This is the only one I post on and I rarely even visit any other message board, unless I want to see what people are saying about something work related..product (mine or competition) or industry related issues.

Steak.  I'm a huge steak snob and I think 99% of steak eaters don't realize they are either eating over-priced crap steak or ruining their steak by over cooking. I'm a real dick in a steak joint if my steak isn't to my liking.  I blame it on having our own cattle growing up and basically eating T-bones once or twice a week for my entire childhood.  I took great steak for granted.

I'm a huge snob about finding people that complain about the way a steak is cooked at a restaurant, and firing nut blows to the nut section of their person.  Like hey, if you are so perfect, why aren't you cooking your own steak, here's a nut shot to your nuts as a nice parting gift, see ya.

TV size/quality for watching Cat football/Cat hoops.  I can compromise somewhat and go to a place with bad TVs (Johnny's on K10 that is full of worn out plasmas) to hang out with a fun group but it will still bug the crap out me the whole time.

Coffee - prolly not to the extent of the French Press only types but I will hardly drink a cup if it not strong and flavorful.

TV shows and residences. It's something I need to work on, because I have a reflexive negative reaction when I hear people express approval of certain shows or types of shows, or when people say they live in certain areas, or when I walk into certain types of houses/decor.

My dad never thinks to watch the HD channels on his TV... every time I sit down with him he's watching a game in SD... I grab the remote... change it to HD... and every time he says... "Well crap, that's a better picture." and I just

EDIT:  I know I should just remove the SD channels from his guide but he was kind of a prick sometimes growing up so I don't feel like it.

Understandable, i used to get super fun headaches when it was sunny out.  Discovered sunglasses cured that problem well.  Used to buy basic crap sunglass and they would always scratch or fall apart quickly.  Friend of mine had a pair of oliver peoples, insanely light, durable and look elite as eff.

I'm not really a snob with anything, accept for those who use steak sauce on their steak. Dad put this in my brain. You're ruining it.

Why does this matter anyone?

Do you give a crap when people dip their pizza in ranch?

Let it go. It's not going to make you less of a pussy if you prefer to non-dip.

Do you keep tomato paste away from your burger? Can you ruin a burger by using it?

I have probably been snobby about tons of stuff throughout my life.  However, over the last few years I have shed a bunch of it.  For the most part, I really don't give a eff about "brands" anymore.

Maybe college sports and divisions.  I don't watch women's sports and won't pay much attention to anything below BCS level football and basketball.  And, Mexican restaurants....but, I still love Tex Mex too...just snobby about how to label them.

For me, a more interesting list is stuff that I was once snobby about, but no longer give a eff:
Sunglasses brands
Shoe brands
Suit/dress pant brands (sill love BB shirts)
Booze brands
Electronics brands
Cars
Music
Cologne brands

ok i'm pretty snobby about music. i tend to judge people that don't have a very broad range of taste like i do. so like people that listen to one genre only annoy me and i make fun of them.

also i have a really good ear, not perfect pitch, but the next best level right under that, so if someone's off key, in any context, i usually say something about it. like if a person changes key in the first five seconds of the national anthem (happens all the time), i will absolutely point it out to those around me.

i think i like to be snobby about these things because i generally hang out with people who know very little about music.

Love it. LOVE IT. Do you guys also bug out when people sing Happy Birthday without first establishing a pitch on which to start? A bunch of clowns at my work just try to start singing all at the same time and no one blows a pitch pipe or anything. I feel embarrassed for them because they just sorta swim around in this awful and ambiguous undefined tonal area for like two lines until they somehow sync up.

also i have a really good ear, not perfect pitch, but the next best level right under that, so if someone's off key, in any context, i usually say something about it. like if a person changes key in the first five seconds of the national anthem (happens all the time), i will absolutely point it out to those around me
True story and maybe belongs in stud thing thead... tdaver, tdaverbro, tdaverbigsis, and tdaverlilsis all have perfect pitch.  The national anthem thing is like nails on a chalkboard.

Love it. LOVE IT. Do you guys also bug out when people sing Happy Birthday without first establishing a pitch on which to start? A bunch of clowns at my work just try to start singing all at the same time and no one blows a pitch pipe or anything. I feel embarrassed for them because they just sorta swim around in this awful and ambiguous undefined tonal area for like two lines until they somehow sync up.

omg yep. i don't like to show off but it is in this situation that i establish myself as the clear vocal leader and really set the key on the first HA- of "HAPPY". people usually fall in line. but you're right the "1, 2, 3, go.." approach is excruciating.

Some elite universities transpose melodic and harmonic dictation to make sure their students with perfect pitch have to still think about the intervallic relationship between notes  :surprised: :surprised: :surprised:

Gift for sure but there are a few negatives like listening to people that can't sing try to sing.  I grew up going to a church that sang a capella.  That could wander all over the place.

Also my high school music teachers would jack with me just for fun now and then, like starting a song in a different key than shown in the music.  Everyone else just sings away in blissful ignorance and I'm standing there looking at him with a "what the hell are you doing" look on my face.  He would just laugh and then start again in the right key.

I used to be pretty snobby about chain restaurants.  I'm not any more. I mean, I still prefer the local joint, but I'm not going to act like I'm too good for Chili's or whatever.

Not a big fan of snobs in general, and most snobs would do well to receive a good punch in the nose.

It is a benefit to a singer to have it.  It does not make you a good singer.  Like a palate to a chef.  Now you both look silly.

I will join the group that is snobby about concerts. I like small venues, not so much for acoustics, but for a more intimate show.

Most important to me is seeing a band in their prime.  I've seen too many bands about 3 albums too late.  They play a bunch of their shitty new stuff, their biggest hits, and then maybe 3 or 4 songs off their good albums.

I'm definitely snobby as crap about terrible pop music. Like, I talk crap on it basically whenever I can. I'm also very snobby about shitty TV that people waste their time with. I don't talk nearly as much crap about that, though, at least not openly.

Guys, which is worse: a coffee snob or a beer snob? I'm neither but I would say coffee snob is slightly worse because at least with beer you can get faced while some dude is boring the crap out of you with talk about which pilsner is the pilsner-iest.
