Title: Motorcycle Thread
Post by: 1/64th on April 06, 2010, 03:22:52 PM
So I'm going to buy a motorcycle next year.  I may try to pick one up for cheap in the winter or I may just wait till it gets warm.  Idk yet.  Anyhoo, I'm wondering if any of you doodz have motorcycles and would like to tell me what kind of motorcycle to buy and what not to buy.  Please do not tell me to buy a $15k Harley cuz it ain't gonna happen.  I'm looking at mid-sized cruisers, no crotch-rockets.

I've looked at Kawasaki Vulcan 900s, Suzuki C50s, Yamaha V-Stars, and Honda Shadows.  Anything else to look at and what do you think of the ones already mentioned.  TIA.

Suzuki Boulevard C series.  Been a fan of these for a few years.  I don't have one, just like the look.

Last time I looked(been a while), there were quite a bit more affordable than a Harley.

You should probably get a Harley or something.  You can pick one up for around 15k I've heard.

Find a nice used Yamaha Roadstar Warrior.  Would post a pic but too lazy/stupid.  Nice bike.  Also, good choice on the Harley.  Harleys are nice if you like WW1 technology but other than that they are just status.  Oh yea. while on the topic, Harley Day can GTFOOMMFF!  :chainsaw:

CNS, I did look at those Can=Am reverse three wheeler things.  Pretty weird.  and expensive .

Yes, but don't have a cruiser. Sorry I can't help.

The best advice I have for you are:

Of course, I'm assuming you are a noob, so if not, good luck for your bike search. Just my $.02

I have a Honda VTX 1800C. It also comes in a 1300cc version. Comes in several differnt versions from a big fender bagger style to a sportier version which is what i have. They are shaft driven so they are next to zero maintenance. Very good bike for the money.

I've been riding my dad's Vulcan for a couple years now and have ridden my father in laws Harley Road King.  I know I want something smaller than that behemoth.  I'll check out the Honda VTX line.  Thanks for the info.

PS.  And SD, next time I'm in the market for a small foreign car, I'll know who to ask.

I wouldn't go around telling a lot of people about your scooter wreck.  However, scooters are super fun while being cute and adorable all at the same time.  But they don't go on the highway, which I will need to do.  Good lookin out brah.

Not ashamed of riding/wrecking a scooter.   :curse:

Plenty of them go on the highway.  Just depends on what your needs are.

Either way, wear a helmet....I have a used full face one that has massive slashes across the front and side from my rough ridin' head slamming against the pavement and sliding for a few feet.  I would have died without it.  No joke, bro.

I always wear a helmet.  I went a couple blocks once without one and it scared the bejesus out of me.  Will always wear a helmet, don't worry about me there.  I would like to get a scooter too and start a scooter gang.  Let me know if any of yall would be down for that in the KC area.

Just picked up a triumph Bonneville this weekend.  Pretty excited, I've found that my free time is now spent looking at aftermarket upgrades vs goEMAW.

To me, half the reason they are cool is because they are not made anymore. Not sure I would care as much if they were mass produced.

I thought they were cool before that, but yes, '52 Black Lightning.  "Red hair and black leather, my favorite colour scheme."

Take the MSF basic riding course, you'll know how to ride a motorcycle vs. simply operating one.  Full face helmet, preferably hi-viz, or at least white.  Those two things will cut your risk of having an accident.  The MSF course taught me to ride defensively, which was like work at first (paying attention to so much), but now its habit.

Used to have a Honda Silver Wing, back when it was a motorcycle, now it's the name of one of their scoots.  Without luggage, it was the GL500C, water cooled, shaft drive, smooth as silk.  It wasn't massive, but you could run the highway all day long comfortably, it's the closest thing to a perfect bike I've ever seen.  Could cruise all day at 90 mph if you wanted to, and I often did.

Now I'm riding a Honda Nighthawk, a 250cc bike that's easier to handle and put in the garage between the cars.  Not a very good highway machine, and you want off of it after 45 minutes.  But it's a great commuter bike.  Buddy that I ride with has a Suzuki Bandit, an 1100 cc bike that he got pretty cheap, and it's been a really good bike.  In the range you've expressed interest in, a Suzuki Savage (650cc)  may be worth considering--they don't command a premium like Honda or Yamaha, but they run like iron.

Just my opinion.  Good luck with your purchase, and have fun putting your knees in the breeze.

I actually kinda want a scooter.  The ride to work is short so it seems safe, but then I'm like the ride is so short I'm not saving any gas really.
