How do you enjoy white privilege? I'll start: when I'm in a city and I have to pee, I go into a nice hotel and use the lobby bathroom. No one gives me a second glance.

What if you were poor, maybe a little unkempt? I bet you wouldn't do it then.

I'm always a little unkempt

The author is saying that "white privilege" is BS and used to shame white people into concessions.

White immigrants got white society where it is today through hard work.
black people just need to work harder.

Yes.

okay so I did read this and I am curious how many of you have experienced this alleged problem this guy is complaining about. Have any of you had your accomplishments diminished or discounted because you were white? I have never felt this way, but I am a white person in Kansas, so I really wouldn't expect me to encounter this phenomenon (if true).

I went to a private east coast school and I am crazy white and no one ever once said those words to me. This dude wanted to brag on his parents and grandparents for awhile.

I haven't. I get what he's saying though. I'd bet it happens a lot more in places similar to Princeton and the upper middle class northeast. Still, he comes off as a whiny baby. People (of all races, cultures, etc.) generally whine too much. It gets pretty tiring for the listener.

Also, apparently Jewish people have joined Italians and Irish and everyone else as just regular white people now.

Jewish children of business owners have it incredibly rough in NYC

My takeaway was that the kid hasn't really ever gone through any adversity himself, so he decided to look at what his ancestors went through to make himself feel better.

If you're going to blame all white people for the sins of past generations, you should also give credit for the hard work and suffering, too.

I don't blame any people for the sins of past generations, though.

This is true.
That dude comes off as whiny as a minority student who writes an op ed piece on discrimination for the Princeton newspaper. Both instances are just annoying
-
That article was really just a long passive agressive humblebrag.
-
Oddly, the kid's letter didn't even use the term "white privilege" -- that racial term was added by the political website that was linked here.
I think this kid widly misunderstands what his fellow students are saying to him when they say "check your privilege." He is privileged if he comes from money -- as he apparently does. This term gets used when kids flaunt attitude that they themselves didn't earn. Yeah, his family worked hard, but he didn't. (I'm pretty sure he would've mentioned it if he had ever done any work himself.) Probably nobody ever told his parents or grandparents to "check your privilege." I'm guessing he behaves like an entitled ass, and his peers are actually doing a him a favor by pointing this out to him.

Are you privileged by being able to log on to goEMAW and judge this dude? I say yes.

Oh, most definitely! :emawkid:

Not that I'm a real big fan of the Duck Dynasty guys, but there was a report awhile back that when they were checking into some high end NYC hotel. One of them had to go pee, and several of the hotel employees stopped him and tried to escort him out thinking he was homeless.

It's amazing what you can get away with in this country when you're a well-dressed white person. I go into NYC hotels all the time to use their bathrooms if I'm out walking around.
On the other hand, one time I was wearing a suit in Jamaica, Queens, and I had this guy walking beside me screaming repeatedly at my face "I hate white people!" I was like, okay dude.

A well dressed black person can also use any bathroom they wish.

I guess I'm privileged that my parents didn't raise me to look like the Duck Dynasty guys.

Pretty much

knowing how much your ancestors suffered is a great feeling. i get a lot of satisfaction and moral certitude whenever i reflect on it.
-
Even when I could easily eat all my food at a meal without feeling stuffed, I always leave a little bit left to throw away, because I enjoy having that privilege.

I would imagine a well dressed black person may be less likely to get called out in the nicer hotels in NYC than a well dressed white person.

It's amazing getting the cred for intense suffering w/o all the suffering

Agreed

Minorities speak very slowly to me and almost always with big smiles. I assume they're attempting to accommodate my extreme whiteness. Though it isn't necessary, I appreciate it and try my best to reciprocate their kindness. These interactions are less common in Kansas, but seem to be the rule in cities like Miami, Atlanta, and NYC.
-
I talk slowly when I'm intoxicated. Maybe everyone has to be ripped out of their mind in order to interact with your slow ass?

Cops don't search my crap when I get pulled over. "oh another warning huh"

It's not super obvious when I wear a band-aid.
