Title: The Veggie Hour: where all gE buds talk about veganism and vegetarianism
Post by: WonderMeal on May 01, 2014, 04:22:48 PM
A few weeks ago I posted in F3's cooking board about cooking for some vegan friends who were coming over, and I was intrigued by the response and assistance from stud goEMAW posters like ChiCat and SluCat. I also read an article recently about Arian Foster (and some other NFL puds) going to vegan or largely-vegan diets. After a thorough and detailed search of gE that took ~10 seconds, I determined that there was no permanent thread on this topic and that we should probably add this to our Combo-Fanning canon.

Guidelines:
-This is a no GPC zone. Meat-lovers (shout-out to AST!) are encouraged to post in this thread, but are not allowed to be dumb about veganism/vegetarianism. This is a thread for grown-ups and is intended for the  and the .

Possible items to discuss in this thread:

-Even if you are not vegetarian/vegan, do you have any desire to learn to cook more vegetarian/vegan meals? (Looking at you, AST.)
-Have you ever eaten vegetarian/vegan for an extended period of time? Share your experience!
-Is your significant other a vegan/vegetarian? Is it an issue at all?
-Do you have any delish vegan or vegetarian recipes?
-If you have a reasoned argument against veganism/vegetarianism, what is it?
-Did you know that vanilla soy milk tastes like melted ice cream? It does, and it rules. (Regular milk also rules.)

Okay, friends. Remember the No GPCing rule, and let's really have at it.

My initial thoughts:

I'm not a vegan or a vegetarian, but I'm pretty intrigued by both and think I could probably do it for an extended period of time. However, I'm totally grossed out by food that is trying too hard to be other food.

Hummus or falafel?  :excited:
Black bean burgers?
Textured soy protein that is pretending to be chicken nuggets?  :Yuck:

But seriously, hundreds of millions of people around the world are totally vegan or like 95% vegan. Seems like it can't be that bad, right?

I actually tried to do a few days where I didn't eat meat, I honestly don't give a crap except for people who are over the top about it (like pretty much anything) but I really couldn't do it.  Every meal was just weird, it was missing something.

But it was a side dish for the ribeye steak I ate.  :frown:

IMO the stuff that tries to emulate meat products is pretty gross.  just do your own thing, veggies!

i'm pretty good at destroying some random tofu stir fries :lick:

I ate a vegetarian diet for about sixth months at one point. It's hard to not chow down on carbs all the time. So in the end it's way worse for you than eating meat.

I'm your huckleberry.  Will have more time later, gotta pack up and head to the lake house villa, tho.  Not a strict vegetarian, but I do think a mostly plant-based diet is a sensible thing.  Our bodies should be respected. Too many folks don't realize the importance of diet until it's too late. When you do eat meat, make it a special meat treat, that's what I always say.

i once ate whole wheat bread, tortillas and corn chips only for 40 days, that has to be vegan or at least vegetarian i'm assuming.  it was a great experience but not sustainable long term.

on tofu.  everytime i eat tofu at restaurants i'm all like "this is delicious."  here's the problem, everytime i make it at home i'm all like "this is the opposite of delicious."  so my question is, are there different grades/qualities/consistancies of tofu (i mean there has got to be right?) and which ones are good when preparing which dishes?  i'm sure i could google it but if i wanted to put that much effort in i'd rather grill a hot dog and eat tofu when i'm eating out.

In an effort to lose weight I once ate raw vegatables and fruit mostly for 60 days.  I say mostly because
On  friday and saturdays I would drink lots of beer and eat a normal dinner ( smaller tho).  This regimen
Was very hard for the first week then pretty easy after that.  I started at 226 and finished at 183, two years later I am 195.

I went from eating red meat as probably 80% of the meat I eat to probably around 20% now.  I eat a bunch of chicken though.  I don't buy that all meat is bad for you.  We are physically designed to eat it.

I have no issue with those who don't dig meat,  but just trying to think about what meal planning day to day would be for my family without chickens, eggs, chz, milk, etc is exhausting.

i just don't really like to handle it/cook it myself and eat it while out (friends, restaurant, etc).  probably cook with it every 2 weeks or so?

that said, ast's cooking thread gets me all katdaddy :lick:

Totally agree.  The egg plant, cauliflower and chick pea dishes are awesome.  And, I am typically not a huge veggie eater.

However, I do eat about 4-5 Boca Burgers a week.

As a hypothetical to any 'tarians/veegz out there: If someone was to show you something that irrefutably stated that all meats in some varied amounts amounts were not only not bad for you but good for you.  i.e - not saying someone tells you that an all meat diet is the BEST EVAH but that some amount of each kind of meat (all meats, tossing gator out there too) was not only an acceptable part of the diet but good for you.  With just evidence, would you still want to maintain a vegetarian or vegan diet?

I think there are plenty of people who would still want to maintain a vegetarian or vegan diet, for many reasons. To name a few--they might remain vegetarian because of their religion, remain vegan because they have read a lot of Peter Singer (et al) and believe eating animals or animal products is ethically wrong, or they simply don't like the taste of flesh (or the act of eating it).

I think there's plenty of evidence that says some animal products are good for you, and millions of people still make the choice not to partake. Similarly, there is plenty of evidence to show that eating lots of red meat almost every day is not the "BEST EVAH" diet, but millions of people (like AST and his buds) make the choice to do it anyway, for various and valid reasons.

Good, we can get back to saying nasty things about them

Nope. Maybe on GPC, but not in this thread. This thread is for grown-ups who are curious and enjoy a good discussion.

I did vegan for a couple months about four years ago. You eat a lot of beans and save quite a bit on groceries. Red beans and rice is the best vegan dish. Black bean burgers are pretty good. Lots of  soups are good vegan. Never really tried making imitation tofu meat because it seemed gross.

I love beans.  My problem is that black beans are super good with a hot valentina sauce and grilled chicken and red beans/rice is best with ham or sausage in it.

I could totally give up meat in dishes like these but not that and dairy or eggs across the board.  If I targeted just meat, I could do that for periods of time,  but not forever unless doctor ordered with a serious promise behind it.

so, uhm, wondermeal tap the brakes a little.  i eat red meat 1, maybe 2 meals a week.  i actually have a very well rounded diet consisting of chicken or turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread for lunch.  dinner is generally chicken, fish or ramen with vegetables. snacks are nutri-grain bars, apples, oranges or sherbert.  i usually grill or smoke on the weekend and i eat red meat that meal and maybe 1 serving of leftovers on sunday or monday.  breakfast is either cereal or fruit.

i love red meat but excess, just like pretty much everything else in life, is bad.

...so it turns out AST isn't eating smoked meat 24/7...

Got it, and agree that excess (including excess prosthelytizing about vegan/vegetarianism) is pretty much always bad. Consider the brakes tapped.

Was just using you as an example because omg your food looks delicious and (fairly or unfairly) you're known as "The Meat Guy" on the board*. While you might not eat red meat every night, there are definitely a bunch of people who do.

I did vegan for a couple months about four years ago. You eat a lot of beans and save quite a bit on groceries.

Mrs. WonderMeal and I decided to eat vegan at home for the past couple of months, and Rusty is right on this one. I'm actually kind of surprised the Dave Ramsey crowd isn't getting everyone to eat vegetarian/vegan, because this stuff is cheap. (Note: we buy real food, not buy imitation chicken nuggets or stuff like that, which is probably more expensive).

We decided to do it so that we would get out of the cooking rut we were in and eat a little bit healthier, and it has definitely worked. Eventually we'll start phasing in dairy products/eggs again, and we'll have twice the number of go-to meals that we cook on a regular basis. Probably won't cook meat at home much anymore, unless it's a special occasion. WonderMeal is ~12-15 pounds lighter, too.   :fatty:

NOTE: I still eat non-vegan/non-vegetarian when I go out to restaurants, when I eat meals at a friend's house, or when I want to crush some Taco Bell. I haven't "gone vegan," which is why this has been an easy and (I think) positive transition.
