Most pundits are picking OU to win the conference this year, which is understandable coming off of their Sugar Bowl win.
But how good are they actually going to be?
I think Trevor Knight is overrated. Did he play great against Alabama, of course. But to expect similar performances over the course of an entire year is a bit of a stretch. Remember, if it isn't for Blake Bell, OU is not in the Sugar Bowl.
Others have pointed to their defense as being the reason they should be the top team in the conference:
Their average of 5.2 yards per play (given up) on the season is far from elite, as it ranks 4th in the Big 12 and 42nd nationally. And in their last three games their yards per play was one of the 20 worst in the nation.
Using metrics provided by FootballOutsiders, it shows they have a favorable ranking of their defense, as they rank them in the top 15. However, any metric that has Auburn's D in the top 10 is a little bit confusing. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/feidef2013
In talking with Dlew12 awhile back, he brought up the point that we generally play OU tougher in Norman than we do here. '09 and '01 come to mind as games we entered with a far either worse or inexperienced team.
Hopefully this year we can do 2012 all over again.

I think we need to wait for the usual summer dismissals from the OU squad before we can accurately predict what will happen.
-
Already lost a 4 star commit. Sucks to suck
-
they will be pretty good but not great.
-
I think Knight is the most overrated Heisman hopeful since that WVU QB from a few years ago.

regardless of how good they are, we're going to at least play them close and maybe kick their dicks off because they play the RRS the week before while we have a bye. take that analysis and your farm to the nearest sportsbook.
-
They'll be human.

Actually HoochCat was the person that first pointed that out to me at your apartment.

Ever since that one dude tried to kill us with a bomb in their stadium, we've played very well. :ksu:

it's a really good point. losing by 12 to an 8-5 OU team in 2009 tells me that we are going to crush them this year.

GAMEDAY!?!?!?! :excited: :excited: :excited:

Point taken, though in '09 keeping it close really did feel like an accomplishment.

Correct. No sense jumping the gun when we know circumstances will change.
-
'09 @ OU was the definition of a moral victory. Brandon Banks KO return! Daniel Thomas jump pass!

OU has consistently layed an egg at least twice the last several seasons. I'm hoping we catch them at just the right time this season.

Waters will throw for 300+ plus. Lockett 3+ TDs. Cats by 14+. Not a doubt in my mind.

This. Last year he was not very good and was hated by OU fans until they put Bell in. Trevor has one good game against Alabama, so now of course he'll play that way for every game of this season and OU will win everything.
...so I hear.

So far the sports stations in Tulsa are not absolutely sold on OU. Not that they cannot win the Big XII, but on any given Saturday, anyone in this league can be knocked off. OU is beatable and frankly other QBs showed well in the spring scrimmage, so Knight may get the start, but it does not mean he keeps the job the whole season.
They have a kid that everyone has been waiting to take the field for two years out of Jenks (Alex Ross). This kid is a beast and their running back corps will be better than last year. But the Sooner Nation sounds like they are more enthused by the overall defense led by Eric Striker.
Granted, OU has a very favorable schedule this season. The only AWAY game that might give them trouble may be in Morgantown. Any team contending for the championship will have to go to Norman.
-
Knight is the best QB OU has had since Sam Bradford. They are going to be hard to beat.
-
OU football alumni in my office seems overly confident OU will beat the cats. I'm worried now guys.

Yes they will be very hard to beat on paper, but they were not named one of the highest overrated programs for nothing. I think in the end, Knight will be less a factor than the defense or their running game next year.

Knight is a pretty big part of their running game.
