Better than this season, which was pretty good especially for a "rebuilding year." We've been pretty damn good for the last 8 years, and it looks like it will continue for the foreseeable future.

oscar's offenses have been outside the top 100 in efficiency in 5 of the last 8 years. We'll likely stink on offense again next year. Can our defense remain as good as it was this year?

What's meh? Honest question?

need to compete for the title IMO, reasonable expectation

the ksu cats of manhattan, ks.
I'm tired of the cats being pretty good. I'm ready to rough ridin' beat kevin down cherry hill. I'm ready to beat Matt and Brett in the turd contest. Ready for the cats to do a backflip and have roger chickenhawk out.

I think we'll compete for the B12 title next season. 3-6 seed is my likely range, with 2 or 7 being positive and negative outliers.

The addition of Edwards has me excited

4-5 seed, tied for 2nd in the Big 12.

This team over-achieved at times this year. One would think that the TOs and long stretches of scoreless offense would improve with another year of maturity. However, oscar's offense will continue to look terrible when we play against teams with better athletes and teams who emphasize defense.

We're going to the 16 next year

And yet another first round exit
-
we're probably going to be 4th or 5th in the preseason conference polls
-
Ku OU and texas will be picked ahead of us. So 4th-5th sounds right.
I believe we will be top 3 in the conf and be a top 5 seed in the NCAA.
Its a gut feeling cause he hasn't played 1 min for us but I think Edwards is gonna help us a lot ( feel he can be top 12 player in the league next yr)
-
5 seed and a 1st round loss to a 12. Overachieving!
-
We are going to be about exactly the same. 5th place, lose first game of Phillips and first game of dance. Currie and Schultz will say we over achieved, give oscar an extension. Apathy will pick up another year of momentum.
-

I predict that this will be 100% accurate.

Hearing excellent reports on Edwards and Bolden's development and athleticism. We should go to the sweet 16 at the very least or in my opinion, it's a failure. This season was kind of a success I guess, based on the pieces we had, but next year needs to be much better or we should look at Underwood(as we should have done in 2012).
-
All I know is we need hurt to be a stud. I like our team next year and think even oscar can win a god damn tournament game with our guys but we got killed by length last night and I just to have a stud legit big man

From what I'm hearing we will have 2 stud big men and 2 stud guards(Edwards and Foster)

What will the Brucecuses be?
-
What will it take to improve on this year, from a conference record perspective? :dunno:
OK, it would seem that we all agree that OU and UT will be just as good or better next year, and KU will still have a ton of talent. We would have to improve a LOT to believe that we'll be substantially better than those guys. But, it's reasonable to think we could steal a couple games, maybe even go .500 against those guys. Not probable, but possible.
OSU has some studs in their recruiting class (3 top 100 guys). Iowa State and Baylor lose some great players, so they will likely be down. We'd need to finish above .500 against this group to improve on this past year.
Then, we'd have to plan on nearly sweeping TCU, Tech, and WVU.
It appears to me that it would be unreasonable to EXPECT us to be in the top 3, but reasonable to EXPECT us to be 4th or 5th.
-

It's going to be tough to remind ourselves of this when we are sitting in 4th or 5th toward the end of the conference season next year, and getting greedy... ;)

Of course. It was extremely frustrating sitting tied for 2nd with 2 games left this year and finishing 5th. Rightfully so, expectations will vary during the season based on the highs/lows and wins/losses, but I think its good to try to look back at your preseason expectations too after its all over.
-
I agree.
My preseason expectation for us this year was generally where we finished. I expected us to be right in the middle of the conference.
BUT, revised that to dead last, after the Northern Colorado loss, and I raised it to first after the OSU win. So yeah, putting your pre-season expectation in writing, and reflecting back on it is important.
-
Bullshit. Compete for the conference or get the eff out. That should be the expectation. What the eff are we playing for if it isn't?
-

We're playing to be as good as we can be and sustain it.
I like the team oscar has coming back, but winning the league next year would be a lot to accomplish. Now 2 and 3 years from now with Foster (hopefully one of the best 2 or 3 players in the Big 12 by then and a POY candidate) absolutely it should be an expectation. I've never considered competing for the conference title to be a realistic expectation for every season as a K-State fan, but I'd say every 3-5 years to compete for it is reasonable. JMHO.
If you want to continually piss yourself off because we don't win conference titles every year go for it.
-

Yep.
-
Also I hope DJamer gets well soon, he may not be a very good player but he progressed really well this year
-
Not win. Compete (I.e. within 2 games). We did it in oscar's 1st year. Ok fine we don't in his 2nd but we should next year. Recruit. eff everyone in this conference just concedes this rough ridin' conference to kansas by refusing to demand more.
-

I would say the 2013-14 team did play above their ceiling. They did overachieve. If the 2014-15 team performed similarly I would be disappointed.
-
I mean, this is the Big 12. There are 9 teams in this conference that should just pack up and leave, if they "expect" to win a conference championship with any regularity. 10 data points in a row equal one mother rough rider of a trend. In basketball, this is KU's conference, some of us just get to share it with them every once in a while.
-
I agree with you guys that we are completely mumped without Angel. 8th or 9th place finish.
-
Not win. Compete (I.e. within 2 games).
I'm good with that.
-
I would add to my "get to the tournament" minimum that you should at least play to your seed. Last year we definitely did not do that and it sucked.

I support this.

Outside shooting and point guard play will be the challenges next year. Three years into his tenure and oscar hasn't recruited a quality point guard while chasing an all-conference PG off. Not good. An the offensive guru continues to field sub-Frank quality offensive teams.
I see the Cats finishing pretty close to the same, May be better but so will most teams in the conference.
As I see it, at best if we beat up on the bad teams:
K-State =/^
KU =/\/, assuming Imbiid goes pro (1-1)
OU ^ (1-1)
Texas ^ (1-1)
WVU ^^ (1-1)
ISU = (1-1)
Baylor \/, assuming Austin goes pro (chance for 2-0)
OSU \/ \/ (2-0)
TCU ^ better but still (2-0)
Tech ^ see above (2-0)

Iowa State will be very good again. Naz Long and Monte Morris are very good and will get more minutes with the departures of Ejim and Kane, of course dickbag Niang will only be a junior.
-
If Bolden and Edwards are even near as good as I've heard, we are going to be much better than 5th. I understand not counting on that though, but there's still Hurt, etc. This is the least amount of talent we have lost in a while and we should be better at everything next year. I would honestly be pretty unsatisfied with 5th place/middle of the road finish, I expect more than that.

I don't know what this means.
K-State had some young talent and a lot of questions coming into the season. They were looked at as a bubble team at best. They outperformed those expectations. Next year the expectations should be higher. 3-6 seed range and being in the mix for the conference title.
K-State will always be a team that includes bubble-type teams in its cycle. That cycle is not average or mediocre, it's pretty damn good.
-

You know exactly what it means; people think the oscar is a loser who develops soft teams.

Meh. Pretty much the same to me. Plenty have always thought oscar is an unconfident dork/loser. I get it.
-
It doesn't really matter what the expectations are. We were expected to finish 5th this season, we did, and the powers that be disregarded history and called it over achieving. We will finish where we finish, and as long as it isn't 8th or lower it will be spun accordingly to fit their agenda of not admitting a mistake with the hiring process in 2012
-
Let me make this simple.
K-State chose to have Weber lead the basketball team. Weber chose everything in the program, including the players.
The rest of the world observed those things and said, welp, K-State's back to a middling program with a 5th-place, 1st-round exit ceiling.
So, no credit to K-State and/or Weber for meeting the low standards that only exist because of their own actions.
In contrast, nicname, when you play poker and are dealt horrible cards all night and are still able to get average results, that's deserving of credit and could be considered overachieving and overcoming adversity. K-State wasn't dealt oscar Weber, and oscar Weber wasn't dealt his team. They both selected what they got.

I see what you're saying. I should also probably amend my statement about overachieving. The Cats played above their heads for a good stretch of the season, but eventually regressed back to around their expectations (preseason polls, etc.). Before the season I thought they'd be a bubble team, and be in that 5-6 range in the Big 12 also.
The Big 12 performed well this season. K-State met their expectations with the 10-8 5th place finish. They benefited from the Big 12's overall strength and were never really on the NCAA bubble.
I tend to look at K-State hoops in cycles. I'm cool with a .500ish Big 12 record and being on the NCAA bubble being the low-point in the cycle of K-State hoops, which is basically what this season was. The expectations go up next year.

I'm sure there's quotes/video somewhere w/o the DScott-ness, but it's what I've got at the moment.
It's his curse because less than 3 minutes after nailing the 3-pointer and stirring the air and shouting to K-State fans, the 6-foot-7, 215-pound Southwell went up baseline, really went up strong to the basket, and at least to observers sitting courtside, it appeared he got clobbered inside the paint. No whistle.
Southwell, laying on the ground, slapped his palms onto the hardwood, jumped up, yelled the magic words -- first word is "bull" and second word ends in "it" -- while staring down an official, and, bingo.
"I thought it was kind of clear that was a foul," Southwell said. "I really didn't say much to get the technical. I guess the stare down was good enough. I should become an actor with my stare down."
-
Yeah he said it in the post game press conference along with oscar talking about Vulture crying. You should listen to it there were several good quotes. It's on the radio broadcast and the NCAA used to post them on their site, not sure if they still do.
-
Our D was pretty good this year...especially with no rim protecter. Most peeps think Will was not good on D and Shane was undersized and ave at best for a 4 guy. Our defensive team should be better next yr... and if that means better Def numbers amidst the league...then we have all the makings of a top 20 team.
-
Shane's defense at the 4 never hurt us, at all
-
Shane's defense at the 4 never hurt us, at all
The real benefit should probably be better rebounding. Shane was not a terribly effective rebounder.
-
Shane's defense at the 4 never hurt us, at all
I disagree. There were times when he got posted up and there was nothing he could do to stop their big because of his lack of size. It didn't happen a lot but it did occassionally.

maybe once or twice. There aren't many bigs at this level that you can just throw the ball to and have them score against someone slightly smaller.
-
West Virginia will be the most improved team in the league next year.
This is possible. As is almost anything. Whether they will be the most improved team remains to be seen, but they will likely be better than this season.
