KU warns of accreditation issues at medical school, but committee rejects funding initiative
TOPEKA — Kansas University officials warned Tuesday that without budgetary help from the state, the medical school faces the possibility of losing its accreditation, but a Senate committee rejected their pleas.
"I just implore you to please consider this initiative," said Dr. Doug Girod, executive vice chancellor of the KU Medical Center.
But the Senate Ways and Means Committee approved a capital improvement plan that failed to include two major funding sources that KU said it needs to start construction of an estimated $75 million to $80 million health education building.
Committee Chairman Ty Masterson, R-Andover, was unswayed by Girod's assertion.
After the meeting, Masterson said, "I don't feel the accreditation is in jeopardy. If it were, we would reconsider what we needed to reconsider."
Masterson said KU had sufficient resources "to answer the accreditation issue. It's just prioritization. If they want to prioritize the accreditation as a project they have the resources to do that," he said.

no kidding. it's like 3 grand a night to stay in one of those rooms. what are they spending it on?
fwiw, the hospital is a separate institution from the med school
-
Inmates running the asylum
-
honestly, it would be pretty embarrassing for the state if we lost our only medical school
-
So, its not just "KU football is hurting"?

Kstate will open one, it will quickly win a title as best med school

Considering they couldn't even diagnose (prognose?) Embiid's back fracture this really isn't a big loss.
-
Good point
-
I don't have the pic, but @Trim got a screenshot of the "official diagnosis" from Dr. RCB

The legislators are being dumb. But so is kumed, no one with a scintilla of knowledge and common sense believes that the issues with the education building haven't been known for quite some time, yet a myriad of other projects at kumed have been given higher priority. Isn't educating doctors kumeds core mission?

FWIW - the hospital and med school are completely seperate entities. we give the med school $100M a yr to support their "mission"
Med school could go under, we'd be fine :)
-
Used to work at KU Med (hospital side). The admin of that place are the most incompetent group of academics you have ever met.
Never saw the school side, would imagine it's the same.
John Currie could turn it into a casino tho.

This is not goEMAWing...this is 100% true...someone close to me works at KUmed and they're planning an expansion, and they asked the employees to donate for the expansion. Like just auto deduct some amount from each paycheck. How rough ridin' poor do you have to be to ask the employees to fund an expansion? Pretty rough ridin' poor is my guess.
Oh also she tells me stories all the time of how incompetent they are from a management and staffing perspective.
-
Also this is where I can get some insider tips on what's going on with the Chiefs because they see them there.

They all do some specific stuff at KUmed.

if you are the legislature, why would you give ku med money when you know they are just going to run out and try to build a basketball players only wing or a second building to house the basketball rules in? like, it's the old i'll buy the homeless guy food but i'm not going to give him money because he's just going to use it buy crack argument. basketball is crack to ku. it's sad but they really can't just be trusted. cheyeene zinger to ku med board "hey maybe you guys should just ask for money and then you give us this other money and then we can build the basketball thing". sad. smh, but so true you guys.

Well it looks like they got their accreditation. That was close. :ohno:

Protip: Best hospital in KC is St. Luke's on the Plaza.
If you have some weird cancer, you go to KU, but for everything else, you go to St. Luke's.

The GF works at KU and was complaining about how they switched their beverage contract from pepsi to RC Cola/Shasta or something to save some money. They also changed the types of IV's they use to a cheaper kind to save like $250,000 a year, all the nurses are pissed because they arent as safe.

I heard a rumor the med school doesn't even need a building anymore. Something about all the lectures being podcasted and posted online for the students to watch at their own convenience from their living rooms, hence the ability to expand the Wichita and Salina campuses. The only reason they ever stepped foot on campus was for monthly computerized exams (taken in the library), weekly mandatory meetings, occasional simulations, and cadaver lab, which if trends continue may eventually be phased out in favor of 3D anatomy software.

Also a great place to be born.

This is why I frequent gE. It's my no-frills one-stop stop for all things KU related. I would strongly recommend goEMAW.com to a fellow friend or relative with KU interests!
